Hi, I’ve not tried Keto before so any advice welcome.

Anyone else just starting out, we could support each other.

It definitely takes up more thinking time when you've not got meat or fish to go to. I meal plan for the week ahead and shop to that meal plan so I don't have to think about what's for dinner that night.

Tonight is fajitas, no wrap for me and extra cheese / avocado / halloumi but otherwise the same meal as everyone else which makes it easier.

@Takingontheworld

Hi all, late to this thread.

I'm 5'2 (and a smidge!) Too!
Ive been on keto since may 19th and have lost 2stone.

I'm finding that one single meal remotely "off plan" equals a 2-4lb gain on the scales and i spend a good week getting it back off. This is SO frustrating. The scales are so much harsher than they are on slimming world (only other diet I've done)

Ive 3 more stone to go, so really a lot to do.

I'm rotating the same few meals atm and can't get enough Kale!

Does anyone have any quick and easy meals that are family friendly? Im exhausted and have found myself hungrier (despite the fat) and losing willpower recently.

I do 16:8 as many days of the week as possible. For a good while i wasn't hungry or craving anything at all but i reintroduced sugar free lemonade so I could have a nice drink in the garden with everyone else but it seems to have sparked sweet cravings i think?

I seem to swing between losing nothing for a week or losing a lb every other day or so for a week or so!? Anyone else?

If you are eating carbs "off plan" you are just raising your insulin levels again, it is not a good idea when you are new to keto, to have cheat meals/days, let your body adjust properly to fat burning and you should also lose the urge to eat the wrong foods.

Most artificial sweeteners will give the same insulin response as sugar. Best to stick to non sweet drinks, ie. water, tea, coffee.

Oh I'm definitely not "cheating" as such, no premeditated "off plan" ... its more like being caught out, i.e, went for dinner expecting mexican- thought I'd order faijitas without wraps - so meat, veg, cheese, sour cream etc all fine.

Instead it was south american tapas, heavily geared towards vegetarian. Everything was bean based or on a bed of corn tortillas etc. I ate as little as possible without starving myself having waited all day for a lovely meal... two mini corn tortillas and about 4 tablespoons of blackbeans at most= a whole week getting back to same weight i weighed in at before the meal. Honestly feels ridiculous!

ultrababy · 14/08/2020 14:53

It does feel ridiculous. I need to find the holy grail of weight maintaining now rather than loss. Maybe I should start my own thread.

WinnieLo · 14/08/2020 17:14

That is my holy grail too!! I got under 9 stone. Relaxed on the 20 net carbs a little and 3 weeks later im 9 stone 3. 😦🤷‍♀️
HOW
Do i have to be keto forever?
I want to be pescatarian /low carb.

Maybe i should just do the diet i want to do for 6 weeks and see what i weigh at the end.

Takingontheworld · 14/08/2020 19:20

Ah i think maintenance is never about staying the same weight. Its a about choosing boundaries so it might be 8.12-9.3 for example. You relax or pull back as and when needed. X

Girlintheframe · 15/08/2020 05:46

You need to remember that with each carb molecule you will retain 3 of water. If you move from keto to low carb your weight will increase but it's not fat it's water weight.
Having a range is a good idea. I've been keto then low carb for over a year now. I allow myself 5lbs over then do a 'reset' and go back to very low carb/keto for a couple of weeks. I do this because I don't want to end up in a situation where my weight 'creeps' back up.
I've noticed though that even when my weight is 5lbs higher my clothes still fit fine and it drops back off as soon as I return to keto.

WinnieLo · 15/08/2020 07:18

Thanks for that @girlintheframe

good points. I want to order that ivor cummins book, the price has gone down #6 pounds since I last looked at it on amazon. He talks about the keto to low carb 'spectrum' - and I think somewhere on that spectrum is where I want to fall.

W4tersprite · 17/08/2020 06:55

Late to the party but please can I join in? I started keto about 2 weeks ago and am doing it to improve my Covid symptoms. I had it in March and have the long tail version which is like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I got to the point where I was so ill and sleeping so much that I couldn’t function and frantic googling led me to a group of people who are swearing by keto as the cure. My symptoms felt much better within a couple of days of starting it so I’m sticking with it and hoping that I continue to improve.

So my reasons for doing it are not be the same as everyone else. Don’t get me wrong though - I need to lose weight especially as I put about a stone on after being too ill to exercise, so I am hoping that it will have that effect too. But I’m probably not being as strict with it as everyone else as weight loss is not my main goal. For example, this morning I’ve had half a grapefruit as I feel like my body still needs some of the vitamins found in fruit to help me to recover. I try to limit myself to the lower carb fruits and only one every day or two. The rest of my breakfast has been egg mayonnaise and some of the cold crispy bacon that Aldi sell.

I’m finding it fairly easy while the weather is warm because I just eat cold stuff but I’m dreading the colder weather as my cooking options are limited due to a severe allergy to peppers and tomatoes.

Takingontheworld · 17/08/2020 11:49

2st 1lb down. I've just finished week 12 but atleast 4 of those were non movers.

Keep trucking on

MattBerrysHair · 17/08/2020 19:08

@Takingontheworld that's brilliant, well done Grin

After just over 6 weeks I'm down 13lbs and my bmi is now 22.7. I've not been as strict as I could have but I'm going to try adding carbs to level out and maintain now.

Jemenfouscompletement · 17/08/2020 19:48

Hi everyone, it's really interesting reading all your experiences!
I notice that some of you snack on nuts - are almonds ok on keto? I think they are lower in carbs than cashews for example. I just want to lose a few pounds, during the holiday too many apéros, crisps, biscuits...
Is red wine occasionally ok?

squiglet111 · 17/08/2020 20:08

I'd like to join if that's ok 😊

I started keto two weeks ago. Might have been this thread that gave me the push to try it 😊

I have had slow losses but losses still. Today I am down 6lbs. This is great for me as I have an underactive thyroid so struggle to lose weight anyway.

I plan to stick to this as a life style change and always try and stay low carb. So expect it to be slow and steady losses. But happy with that.

I've found the diet ok actually. I'm not missing carbs as much as I thought, and as time goes on it gets easier. I'm not feeling as hungry and although I expected to want to eat more meat I have been happy with a standard portion. My husband is doing it with me too so that has helped a lot :)
