Hi, I’ve not tried Keto before so any advice welcome.

Anyone else just starting out, we could support each other.

@TenCornMaidens I'm not sure I should be introduced to cheesies, they sound great but I might end up eating too many. Off to Holland & Barrett tomorrow then...

hamstersarse · 26/07/2020 23:17

There is someone called Dr Mindy Pelz who is worth searching out for all those wondering about doing a bit 'less strict' keto.

Her stuff is especially targeted for women and she advocates that you do days where you 'hormone build'. From day 21 of your cycle, she says to introduce carbs like beans, potatoes etc. to support your progesterone building. You do keto for the rest of the cycle, with some fasting.

I think for those of you who are getting thoughts of potatoes, check where you are in your cycle, if you are somewhere between 21-28 days, this may be why you are getting the cravings.

I like her approach - keto clearly has huge benefits but maybe some people need that carb boost at certain times of the month. I don't think you have to be keto or not keto, a balance can be what works for you.

I can definitely fast easier in the first weeks of my cycle, and can barely do it in the days just before my cycle.

We do have to be aware that a lot of the keto stuff is written for men without the acknowledgement of the fluctuating monthly hormones that women have.

Just weighed and I am the same as last week 81.2kg really need to log everything I eat to see where I can reduce some calories, or have a longer fasting window overnight I think.

Mella91 · 28/07/2020 11:33

@hamstersarse yes!! I was right on 27th day when I got the cravings for crisps and now I am a lot better no more cravings. Thank you so much - I will check her out.

I started last week and weighed myself after first week;

start weight - 87.8 kgs
end of first week (last Saturday) - 84.2 kgs

I have to say I always loose weight fast in fist week and then usually completely stall and that is when I go off my diets usually.

I will log in every Saturday for an update.

Non scale victory today - fit into some trousers that were too tight a year ago. GrinGrinGrin

hamstersarse · 28/07/2020 12:16

@justgoingforanap How long have you been doing it? Are you feeling better? Less bloated, less hungry, more energy?

@Mella91 Classic day 27! It's such important knowledge because you know that it will pass, and also that you may need to do something to relieve that genuine craving. Some sweet potato around that time will do you good if it happens again. Congrats on the loss thoug!

@TenCornMaidens Amazing. I hope you feel super chuffed and proud

Mella91 · 28/07/2020 13:46

@TenCornMaidens thats amazing! Congratulations

justgoingforanap · 28/07/2020 14:07

@hamstersarse I really haven't been doing proper Keto, but in theory started on the 19th I think. I usually eat really well in the daytime, then in the evening when I'm tired (but can't go to bed because of DD) that's when I make bad food choices.

I'll aim to do it properly for the rest of this week and see how I get on. I should put my jeans on and then I'll be able to see if I am a different shape even if I haven't lost weight.

I wouldn't say I have more energy but have been a bit sleep deprived which doesn't help. But not craving carbs, I have the odd bit of rye bread with avocado if I need a really quick unplanned lunch, but mainly eggs, cheese, vegetables & almonds. Fish probably once per week. Rarely meat (not vegetarian I just don't enjoy it).

justgoingforanap · 28/07/2020 14:14

It was 29th June not 19th!

I have noticed my digestive system is better. I have had IBS for years and had a colonoscopy etc and had to take Imodium daily. Now I'm not taking it and almost have the opposite problem.

I'm Peri/menopausal so I have no idea what my hormones are like!

TenCornMaidens · 28/07/2020 15:01

To be fair I have a lot of other NSVs... Generally more normal appetite and relationship with food, no energy slumps after eating, can see the possibility of fasting on the horizon, and so on. Have always felt those more important (but would also like to lose a couple of stone).

MattBerrysHair · 29/07/2020 07:57

I'm back on track after a slip-up at the weekend and I've just measured my waist this morning. I've lost 2 inches in 4 1/2 weeks, so I'm very pleased. I don't actually have any scales to weigh myself (I've been using the Wii fit board) so I'm tracking progress with waist measurements and how my clothes fit.

The only downside to low-carbing/keto for me is the loss of muscle power. I'm a gardener and I definitely feel weaker when digging and lugging heavy equipment about. I also fall asleep easily during the day if I relax on the sofa. I thought it was iron deficiency but my bloods came back normal. I had a full blood count done and everything was normal. Does anyone else experience the same?

pontiouspilates · 29/07/2020 09:33

I've had the opposite MattBerry if anything I've had more energy and felt far less lethargic. Having said that, I'm away at the moment and have fallen off the band wagon totally this week. I'm almost looking forward to getting back on it when I get home. I realise now that I need to plan better for when I'm not at home.

TenCornMaidens · 29/07/2020 10:14

Matt Berry, I don't have that much experience but maybe you need to eat more fat to release energy?

TenCornMaidens · 29/07/2020 10:14

Or add electrolytes to your water - when I feel sluggish it is usually that.

Baileyrose · 29/07/2020 10:43

Hi guys,

This is clearly not working for me, The last week i drop the low cal sugar
completely, im def not hungry, so fasting quite a bit, on the scales this morning, still no weight drop, i actually find it hard to believe to be honest, im not bloated, but still too heavy for my height, the fact iv spent a fortune on ingredients etc, im gonna ride this out until iv used all my stuff

MattBerrysHair · 29/07/2020 11:12

Thanks for the advice. I do keep forgetting to add electrolytes to my water, so I'll make an effort to do that, and I'll up my fat intake and see how it goes.

Mella91 · 29/07/2020 13:49

@MattBerrysHair for me it has been the complete opposite too. I am a very lazy soul and usually always on the couch resting .. since I started keto I have amazing energy and am always up and about. Its very strange.. I think its all the rubbish I started eating a few years ago that contributed to me always being sluggish and having no energy.

@Baileyrose I am so sorry to hear that. I have only been doing keto for a 10days now and somehow I can see myself in your shoes a month down :( My body always completely stalls and I cant manage to loose anything for a long time.

I hope you will find a way through this..

Dulcedelecherocks · 29/07/2020 14:37

@Baileyrose have you taken any measurements? Just asking because keto is not a quick fix and it can take some time for your body to heal from what you were eating and get into ketosis and start using fat as a fuel. I personally don't buy many expensive ingredients and just eat normal, basic food - meat / fish / eggs, fat, cheese and vegetables.
It might also help you to track everything you eat to check you're not overeating on protein and carbs. Don't give up!

hamstersarse · 29/07/2020 17:08

@Baileyrose

How long have you been on keto?

What was your general health like before keto?

Have you been a chronic yo yo dieter in the past?

Have you lost any weight at all?

Sorry for so many questions

ladyflower23 · 29/07/2020 17:14

@MattBerrysHair I'm exactly tbe same on keto. My legs feel heavy and walking up the hill to my house is very difficult because I feel like there's no power in my legs where as normally that isn't a problem. I get really tired after lunch and literally have dripping eyelids. It's like an overwhelming urge to sleep. I've felt better the last few days since I stopped and I haven't changed my diet that much basically just eating more vegetables plus have had some fish cakes and sausages. Nothing drastic like a sandwich though! Sadly I have put 2lbs back on. That's probably the fault of the wine I've been drinking Blush

ladyflower23 · 29/07/2020 17:16

My eyelids have actually been drooping not dripping

Mella91 · 29/07/2020 20:57

I am having a very rough night with horrible cravings.. had 3 ferero chocolates and then a slice of pizza which then ended up being 3 and then chips with ketchup and mayonnaise..

I feel terrible yet satisfied. I am calling this a small break (I feel terrible in reality!) and going to start fresh tomorrow again

pontiouspilates · 01/08/2020 08:42

How is everyone doing? I fell off the wagon on holiday, but didn't go crazy. Gained 4lbs and straight back on it today. Luckily I managed to get a big food shop delivered last night, so I'm ready to go!

MabelStark · 01/08/2020 10:15

Hi! Can I join in? I started Keto last Monday ad I'm 9 pounds down. I've really felt full all the time and I think that not eating any processed foods is really helping me sleep better and have more energy. I think it's a positive change. I've a 14 year old at home so I just make the meal and put him some carbs on it. He seems happy and has enjoyed everything we've had so far which has included
Bacon wrapped chicken
Cauliflower cheese
Pan fried Salmon
Butter chicken curry
Home made turkey burgers
Pork belly
Ribeye steak
Fry up
Stuffed peppers
Beef Madras

WinnieLo · 01/08/2020 10:20

Glad to hear it! That's so important, if you fall off the wagon, don't berate yourself. Just order more eggs :-p

I'm doing well on some sort of low carb diet, can't believe it, I'm under 9 stone now. My set point has budged, for the first time in a decade. I'm amazed. I wouldn't have believed I could weigh less at 50 than I have weighed for most of my 40s.

Chips are the things I find hard to resist. I was out yesterday and I just ordered low carb, but when my daughter's chips arrived and they were so crunchy on the outside and soft-looking in the middle, that did test my willpower. I couldn't even have one because I knew if I had one I'd have 20.

I've a shop arriving soon and I've ordered tofu. I know there is some issue with the phyto oestrogens in the tofu contributing to oestrogen dominance, so I just want to have tofu so that I can eat least meat/fish. This is something I need to get to the bottom of.

@Mella91 don't give up yet, my body stalled badly for three weeks.

Has anybody made a ''fat bomb''?

I haven't but although the purists don't recommend the use of sweeteners as most of them do prompt an insulin response, I see clips on youtube that could be a substitute for a forero roche, and more filling! they melt butter, add things like pistachio butter, sweetener and then set them in the freezer.

@ladyflower23 so you're doing low carb and you've put on weight? That's depressing. Are you logging everything. Chickpeas are surprisingly high in carbs. Have you a total of net carbs you're trying to stay under?
