Hi, I’ve not tried Keto before so any advice welcome.

Anyone else just starting out, we could support each other.

I'm sure they taste no more like bread than a cardboard box tastes like bread.

But I'll give it a go. Sometimes you just want something to put under your butter, or hummous or tahini.

I have to order some of this psyillium husk. It's very high in fibre. So high in fiber that it's a natural laxative and that's its main use. So, one would be enough I'm guessing.

pontiouspilates · 01/08/2020 13:11

Hi Mabel 9lbs in your first week is a terrific start. I also have a teenager at home and just add the additional carbs, it works pretty well and I'm oddly never tempted to pop a roast potato or serving of pasta onto my plate!

gutentag1 · 01/08/2020 14:11

Hi everyone Smile I have just started keto and haven't found it too bad, the only issue I'm having is that after a few days I am just not wanting to eat any more cheese, avocados etc, the thought makes me feel a bit sick. I am definitely eating a lot more protein than fat, will I still get into ketosis this way or does it have to be higher fat than protein?

justgoingforanap · 03/08/2020 12:40

Weekly weigh in - Down a teeny bit today (about half a pound!) to 80.9. Not great, but something. And I have not been really strict. At all.

Mella91 · 03/08/2020 19:45

I feel terrible.. I have continued off the wagon now for a few days.. tomorrow is our wedding anniversary and it seems silly to get back on tomorrow so I will have one final off day and hopefully be back on track on Wednesday.

It's a shame as I was doing well and one small craving put me completely off track..

@WinnieLo wow congratulations on getting under 9st! That's very impressive and my dream.. hope you are enjoying every bit of it!

Mella91 · 03/08/2020 19:46

@justgoingforanap compared to stalling or gaining, I will take your half a pound down any day! Congratulations :)

justgoingforanap · 03/08/2020 22:07

@Mella91 I have managed to (mostly) get into the mindset of not beating myself about 'falling off the wagon'. And I definitely don't think I've totally failed if I have a day or even few days of bad food choices, because that usually leads to more bad choices! Even if I end up eating biscuits or chocolate or whatever, I just try and carry on with Keto/low carb for the next meal and try and focus on why I'm doing it.

pontiouspilates · 04/08/2020 07:36

I'm 2lbs down since Saturday, so very happy to be back on it. It's definitely helpful that my DH is doing this too, I'd find it much harder if it was just me. I agree about not beating yourself up for a bad day (or week in my case) I have another 21lbs to lose, so I've got to be in it for the long haul.

MattBerrysHair · 04/08/2020 10:00

@pontiouspilates

It's so much easier when someone in the household is doing it too!

My periods are a bit different on keto. This is my second whilst doing it and the cramps are a bit more painful and my last one went on for longer than they usually do. Anyone else noticed a difference? I had pre-menstrual carb cravings yesterday so ate some chickpeas at breakfast and after tea I made a keto chocolate mug cake with erythritol. Seemed to do the trick.

WinnieLo · 04/08/2020 11:14

@Mella91 thanks ! enjoy your wedding anniversary and get back on the bus the day after. I had 2 large glasses of wine last night and even though I watered them down a bit and had food, I ended up getting sick this morning, with my 17 year old daughter watching me as I emergency chundered out the back door ''omg you're hung OVER''. I don't think it is exactly a hangover. I think it's a peri menopause symptom! Being a woman is brilliant isn't it?

I started taking a back to back pill progesterone in February as my periods were so heavy, but I'm obviously wondering how no carbs would have affected that, if at all. Probably won't risk coming off that pill as having no periods is great.

I bought some ketone strips from amazon a while ago and even now i'm low carb but not keto, there were ketones in my wee! It's interesting. Not dark but medium. I wish I'd tested when I was really doing keto.

I've a bag of erythritol on order from amazon as well! Might try and make something 'nice' although I know I shouldn't think of it like that.
Must order some psyllium husk. I'm going to make that Keto bread. I'll update. It might be edible. I don't have really high hopes, but something to put under the cheese could be handy.

KetoPenguin · 04/08/2020 11:47

Yay I have finally lost a stone! It's taken two months but I am pleased.
@gutentag1 you definitely need to get your fat in but you can build it up as sometimes it takes a while to get used to, but too much protein is not ideal as the body will convert excess protein to glucose and burn it for energy rather than burning body fat. So aim to keep your protein moderate.

Snowpatrolling · 04/08/2020 21:26

Hi can I join?
I’ve done a bit of research and started keto today after putting 2 stone on in lockdown. :(
Can anyone tell me what they would eat in a day? I don’t eat fish apart from tinned tuna.
I’m struggling with some variety.

Also on the weekends I start work at 6am and cannot stomach food that time in the morning.
I normally don’t eat til I get home at 2pm so how do others cope with this?

If you don’t mind I’d like to log my progress for a bit of support.
I’m 5ft 1 and weigh in this morning at 16 stone and 4 lb. :(

MabelStark · 04/08/2020 21:32

Hi @Snowpatrolling, welcome. I'm just starting week 3 and have lost 11lbs.
I've found that my appetite is much more manageable on this low-carb way of eating as I'm usually like a ravenous wolf!
Most days I could happily fast until lunchtime as I just don't want to eat - if I know I've a long day ahead I have some fruit and cream and pack a few picky bits of ham, salad, feta, or a hard boiled egg to take with me Get plenty of water down you - I was never a fan but it's growing on me!

Hi Thankyou for that, I read you wernt allowed fruit!? I normally have a banana stashed in the car but apparently a big no no! I’m so confused! The diet appealed to me as I’m a big meat and veg eater and not fussy on pasta/potatoes etc. Just going to miss my morning toast! I’ve eaten well today and it was only about 950 calories in total and 27g of carbs. I’ve logged it on fitness pal. I dont feel hungry at all although craving something sweet!!
KetoPenguin · 04/08/2020 21:55

Hi @Snowpatrolling I normally have some form of bacon and eggs or a cheese omelette for breakfast sometimes with mushrooms and coffee with cream, for lunch a salad with dressing and some protein (I had some brie today) or a wrap made of mozzarella cheese and then for dinner a hot meal such as courgetti (made with spiraliser) bolognese, cauliflower cheese made with cream, sausage with mashed cauliflower, "breaded" chicken with crushed pork crackling crumb, stirfry, curry with cauli rice, fathead pizza. All very easy to do. There are lots of good recipes online just search for keto recipes.
If you can't have breakfast you could do a bulletproof coffee.
I used to always fast till 2 and do 16:8 but recently I have been reading about circadian rhythm and the body seems more efficient at processing food earlier in the day so I am trying to eat earlier but there are plenty who do fast in the morning with good results.

@Snowpatrolling berries are lower in carbs than most other fruit so they are ok, just make sure you weigh the portion out. Nuts, babybel, veg sticks, olives etc. are great as a snack to keep away hunger if you can't make time for a meal, but generally you don't tend to feel as hungry as you would on a higher carb diet so not eating until 2 isn't unmanageable if that's what you're used to. If you really can't cope without something sweet the Keto mug cakes made with almond flour and erythritol are great. www.lowcarbmaven.com/keto-chocolate-mug-cake/

Ah thanks for that!
I live babybels so shall stock up on those for work.
I dont like berry’s but will take some nuts aswell.
I’m on day 2 and feeling awful for some reason. Like I just want to lay down and sleep.
I feel sick and not very hungry, just forced a chicken salad down me! 🤦‍♀️

KetoPenguin · 05/08/2020 14:58

@SnowpatrollingThat is what they call keto flu it's a reaction to sudden lowering of carbs. One thing that can help is an electrolyte drink either buy in chemist (check no sugar) or make yourself if you Google keto elecrolyte drink recipe.

amigababy · 06/08/2020 15:57

Hi can I join in. (I'm 5'6" ! Smile ) And vegetarian. I just had a read of someone else's vegetarian keto thread, it was very interesting.
I've just started using an online personal trainer, and when I see myself exercising in the mirror, it's so depressing. Meanwhile dh goes running and plays golf and is slimmer than ever.
I've had it with calorie counting, after a lifetime of it. My biggest downfall is probably fruit, I absolutely love it. Though I suspect that's not what has caused the extra 2 stone, I'd like to blame hormones for that. And sitting on my bum a lot! Smile
A quick read through of the thread is very inspiring.

KetoPenguin · 06/08/2020 16:22

Hi @amigababy I think it's easy to do veggie keto if you can eat dairy and eggs. Keep your fats up with cream, cream cheese and butter plus coconut oil and cream and plenty of eggs and cheese, be careful of the carbs in nuts but they are very useful and good as an ingredient in cooking. Mushrooms are a very useful veg if you like those. You can have tofu but some people prefer to avoid soy so look into that, it is an inflammatory which a lot of clean keto people like to avoid, peanuts are also something some people avoid on clean keto. You can get an expensive but tasty high oliec peanut butter on Amazon if that is a concern.

ultrababy · 09/08/2020 09:25

So what happens when you've lost the weight and just want to maintain it? I've lost the weight I needed to but have started to look at re introducing carbs with some trepidation. Can you do weekdays keto and weekends relax it a bit? Has anyone achieved this successfully?

pontiouspilates · 09/08/2020 11:50

I'm keen to know this too ultra I lost weight a few years ago following the Dukan diet (low carb /low fat - soul destroying!) and piled it all back on the moment I stopped. Pierre Dukan suggests one day a week 'Dukan' to maintain, wonder if that would work for low carb? Probably not for pure keto as it wouldnt be enough to get you back into ketosis?

WinnieLo · 09/08/2020 11:55

Im re-joining next week. Put on a few pounds. My net carbs went up but my fat percentage was just as high. If im traditional low carb i need to take my fat down to under 55%.

Have to go out for lunch now and I do intend to eat whatever is served. Even if that's chips and Rice. 🤷‍♀️

I remember the Dukan diet. That's basically a fast 🤣

ultrababy · 09/08/2020 12:20

I'm just not sure is it ever possible to have a bowl of pasta again? Having doe this for four weeks I'm amazed how I haven't been overweight before. I mean I run lots but this has proved you cannot out train a poor diet.
