Strict Keto

So after the indulgences of Christmas and a pretty lax diet since my 30th in May Blush i’m going to be restarting the Keto WOE from the 2nd January. It’s the best plan for me and really helps with my IBD which is such a blessing. Tried slimming world but carbs just bloat me and the low fat left me feeling hungry.

I’ve got three weddings this year, a trip to Naples in March, Marbella in May and Paris in June, I would like to lose maybe a stone or a stone and a half to feel at my best.

I’ve got my macros calculated and the food shop has been done with lots of meat, cheese, veg and butter! If anyone would like to join me i’ll be posting my food and exercise Smile

Not familiar with Keto. How does it differ from low carbing? Is there a formula you follow re carbs, fat, protein?

Will wait patiently to be enlightened Smile

UnnecessaryFennel · 03/01/2019 20:07

As I understand it, keto tends to be much stricter in terms of restricting carbs and focuses more on maintaining an actual state of ketosis.

I would consider a ketogenic diet to be one that tries to keep carbs well below 50g per day (probably nearer 20g), whereas I think you could argue that even if you are eating 50-100g of carbs a day and not in ketosis you could still be 'low carb' (UK RDA of carbohydrates is >260g per day Hmm).

eg: the Bootcamp threads tend to follow a ketogenic model for the first couple of weeks and then relax a little bit into general 'low carb'.

Ketogenic diets are used quite successfully to treat some forms of epilepsy, I think, but I don't think a general 'low carb' would have the same effect.

Thanks for the explanation Unnecessary

I’m really keen to start this. I’ve been reading a bit but can you recommend any really simple resources to get my head around it. Calculating macros and a quick reference list of good : not good foods. And how many carbs I should aim for - or is this macros? So yes, basic rules would be good, I keep getting a bit bogged down

PinkOboe · 03/01/2019 20:38

Oh massive x post - soz Blush

Iamneverfull · 03/01/2019 20:42

This sounds like a great diet, going to try this. I lost a lot on the dukan diet but its very plain and boring at first. I miss cheese too much!
I always worry about breakfast..any good easy, tasty breakfast ideas on the keto diet?

UnnecessaryFennel · 03/01/2019 20:53

Have a look at the diet doctor website . It's really clear and user-friendly with loads of good recipes plus lots of info on the benefits of low-carb/keto eating.

Megsmcgoo · 03/01/2019 21:36

@Pink ruled.me have a good macros calculator that will work out what you should have in a day, I use MFP to keep track of what I have.

Attached is picture of what you can eat Smile I get LOADS from Instagram

For breakfast this week I’ve been having ham and cheese rolled up which is bloody lovely melted, but I’ve had egg muffins, bacon, boiled eggs, Keto scotch egg (egg, sausage and wrapped in bacon instead of breadcrumbs - very good), full fat Greek yogurt with cream and berries, sometimes the eggs get too much!

Today’s menu
Ham and cheese roll ups
Buffalo chicken casserole with lettuce
Gammon with creamy mushrooms

Another pound down which is great, have a good day!

Why not try vegan this Veganuary and help the planet as well as yourselves?

gettofuckthrees · 04/01/2019 08:34

@baddayattheoffice clearly those ideals aren't going to fit in with the diet. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe next year.

gettofuckthrees · 04/01/2019 08:37

Excellent @Megsmcgoo sounds delish!

I'm fasting until 12 again. Then coffee and eggs!
Lunch will be salad sandwiches again
Dinner is steak with butter fried cabbage and a fried egg.
Lots of water all day.

Nightshift again tonight so will take some ham and cheese rollups in with me if I get peckish.

Have a good day everyone!

UnnecessaryFennel · 04/01/2019 08:54

Ahhh, vegans, bless 'em Grin

Will have coffee with cream this morning, then probably the last of the roast lamb with some salad at lunchtime. Dinner will be sausage casserole with plenty of green veg.

gettofuckthrees · 04/01/2019 12:41

I am starving today!!!!
Have already had two slices of salami, a babybell and two boiled eggs.

Lunch will be salad sandwiches from the diet doctor website: romaine lettuce leaf, some butter, slices Edam, sliced tomato, 1/4 avocado per lettuce leaf. Salt and pepper to season. Nice and light considering I'm having a big steak tea yum yum.

Down 2lbs.

CockersareAce · 04/01/2019 13:14

How often are you weighing yourselves? We officially started Wednesday but plan to weigh on a Sunday. Went on scales this morning and have lost 5lb but I know this is mainly fluid.

Megsmcgoo · 04/01/2019 13:27

I weigh myself daily, it’s just out of habit though! It’s always great in the first week Grin

UnnecessaryFennel · 04/01/2019 14:06

I try not to weigh myself too often, and to go more by how my clothes fit. I have a couple of gorgeous items of clothing that I bought when I was a good stone or so lighter, so I use them as a goal rather than trying to hit a specific number on the scales.

Having said that, I'd like to eventually knock off two stone altogether so will keep a weather eye on the scales. But they can be de-motivating and for me part of the joy of keto eating is how much better I feel, not just the numbers.

UnnecessaryFennel · 04/01/2019 14:08

I'm having two hardboiled eggs mashed up with butter and cheese, and the leftover roast lamb, celery and cucumber.

Claredogmum · 04/01/2019 14:30

I was never hungry. Add more fat if you are. I snack on almonds and other nuts in between.

hermionelodge · 04/01/2019 14:43

I would like to join please. I have about a stone and a half to shift by August... I love the idea of this WOE and have been reading the sites suggested up thread but still slightly confused. I have used the keto calculator and it says I should be consuming 92g of fat a day, I have had a look at the recipes on diet doctor and all of them seem to have at least 30g of fat or more so I'm finding it hard to find 3 meals and snacks tgat will keep me within the target. Is anyone else finding this?

Claredogmum · 04/01/2019 14:53

Carb manager is the best app that I found. I use the free version and it works out your foods.

UnnecessaryFennel · 04/01/2019 15:23

hermione I wouldn't get too hung up on exact macros and grams of fat etc. As long as you are strictly limiting your carbs and ensuring that you have natural fats (ff dairy, olive oil, butter, avocado, fatty nuts, fattier cuts of meats, eggs etc) at every meal, then you won't go too far wrong.

Build your meals around the foods that the diet doctor recommends and you should be fine.

IMO, one of the pleasures of this WOE is that once you get your head around the kinds of food you can and can't eat, it leaves most people fairly free of needing to count calories or grams or track macros to closely. It's uncomplicated.

My rule of thumb is anything of >5g carb per 100g is out and, if I get hungry, I eat more fat and drink some water.

UnnecessaryFennel · 04/01/2019 15:26

And your need for snacks will significantly reduce once you start fat-burning rather than carb-loading!

Another website worth having a look at is Mark's Daily Apple - loads of interesting info on there for both keto and more 'liberal' low carb eaters.

hermionelodge · 04/01/2019 16:50

unnecessary thanks for the advice. I'm probably over thinking it... too worried I eat too much fat and end up gaining! I will definitely have a proper look over those sites this weekend and get my food shopping sorted for starting fully on Monday!

Looking forward to losing the Christmas bloat at least! Most definitely need to up my water also so this should help!
