Week 4 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - the end of the first half!

BIWI · 03/06/2024 07:03

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet

So this week sees us reaching the end of the first half - so 'only' another 4 to go!

Remember that week 4, along with week 3, can be a tough week from the POV of weight loss, so if things look like they're slowing down/stopping, despite your best efforts, don't be downhearted. We see this every Bootcamp, without fail! Just KOKO (and make sure you're following the rules, of course), and things will get going again.

We took advantage of the lovely weather yesterday to have our first barbecue of the year. Can't believe we had to wait until June! But I love a barbecue as it's so easy from a low carb perspective. On the menu this time we had:

  • halloumi in lemon, garlic and coriander dressing
  • home-made beef burgers (just beef mince, with some added olive oil and salt/pepper/mixed herbs), with fried onions and plastic cheese (It's got to be plastic cheese!) DH/DC had their in buns, I had mine 'naked'.
  • chicken breast fillets, on skewers, which had been marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and fresh oregano
  • sausages
  • aubergine, served with FFGY into which I'd added the zest of a mandarin, and a little bit of its juice
And to go with this I'd made coleslaw, a green salad and (for the rest of the family) potato salad.

Loads left, so I know what I'm having for lunch!

Sadly the weather doesn't look like it's going to be anything like as nice for the rest of the week Sad
However, I hope you all have a good week. @MissBeck I haven't seen either of those books before, so looking forward to hearing your review!

@MissBeck Sounds like you had an absolute ball in the carvery! I enjoyed reading about your dinner in the same way you enjoy listening to your younger single friends talk about their dates when you’re older and married!

We’ve decided to get a takeout tonight. Any suggestions on good low carb ones? In London so can get pretty much anything…

SpellitwithaY · 06/06/2024 19:46

@missbeck. I've eaten barely anything today so the sound of that roast is making my mouth water!!! I'm at the restaurant in the hotel now. I've ordered like a smothered chicken, green veg and salad. I was soooooo looking forward to a steak but not on the menu today.... This looked like the best option.

The factory was making Cherry Bakewells today, Almond slices and vegan brownies. I hate cherry Bakewell and almond slices, and I wasn't offered any but easy to resist. There was a goody bag but I didn't take one as it was a bit awks as I'd kind of gatecrashed another teams tour so I didn't want to take one in case it left their team short.

There's a LOT of cake ALL the time at work. So I have to just go cold turkey on it all.... I've got to ride this period of laser focus for all its worth!

MissBeck · 06/06/2024 21:31

@Bex5490 What takeout did you get??

@SpellitwithaY Proud of you for resisting the goodie bag!

I'm feeling a little peckish! 😂

Bex5490 · 06/06/2024 22:27

@MissBeck Turkish! Loads of meat and salad which was actually delicious

NotDonna · 06/06/2024 22:35

Oh @MissBeck I belly laughed at your carvery outing! I’m so pleased you enjoyed it though and I’m sure your dad did too. As a one off it’ll be fine. Was that the only meal you had all day? And no booze?
@SpellitwithaY I adore almond slices so I’d have struggled! Well done you for resisting the goodie bag. Sorry there was no steak. So disappointing when that happens.
@prettybird congrats at being ahead and the new size 12’s!
I struggle with choosing a takeaway @Bex5490 but tend to opt for Indian and get tandoori chicken and ask for a salad or do my own veg- but it kind of misses the ‘no cooking’ point of having a takeaway!
Another angelic day today although I’ve eaten a lot of food as quite hungry all day. Drank all the water plus herbal teas
B- coffee with almond milk
L- chilli (no beans) with leeks & cabbage
Snack - half avocado, whole pepper and half cucumber
D - chilli (no beans) with a feta custard type topping & leeks & cabbage

Im now stuffed!

lastchancesalmon · 07/06/2024 00:57

@Bex5490 Turkish is an excellent choice for this WOE. Hope it was good.

@MissBeck fair dos, you've done weel. An the honesty! Tbh you'll probably be ok. Be strict and drink all the water for few days. That's my advice.

@SpellitwithaY I'm in awe.

@prettybird victories galore!

I was out in the town tonight! Posh drinks in London. I'm proud because although much wine was drunk I did not eat any canapé (annoyingly there was a chicken skewer one but they never came near me) nor did I get a McDonalds on the way home. I was am starving though. Are two babybel and two herta frankfurters- not great but fine. So overall, pleased with the situation!

MissBeck · 07/06/2024 08:32

Morning all!

The sun is blazing in the sky, and my last day off, so today I'm mowing the front lawn before my neighbours report me to the council! 😂

@Bex5490 Turkish?? One thing I've never tried! Glad you enjoyed it!

@NotDonna Yeah, it was the only meal I had all day apart from a slither of cheese for breakfast, oh and a bag of scratchings before bed! No booze as I don't drink. 😁

Pleaseandthankyou · 07/06/2024 08:49

Weighing in today. I started late. Another pound off so 8 in total. It is going to be hard staying on plan this weekend. I will be staying with friends. I am feeling quite down today, life is stressful but I can’t show this is real life. I am not sure why I am writing it here. I am also annoyed that I have let my weight creep up. I lost weight on bootcamp a few years ago and maintained successfully for a few years. I am aiming for another 10 pounds. Off to give myself a shake and face the world with a smile on my face.

MissBeck · 07/06/2024 08:52

@Pleaseandthankyou Sorry you're feeling down. 😕Rant away on here to your hearts content! Sometimes we just need somewhere to put down our thoughts without being judged. xx

NotDonna · 07/06/2024 10:29

@Pleaseandthankyou sorry you’re feeling down. Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason. It just is. Be kind to yourself! Hope your weekend is a good one.

RECIPE REQUEST I bought spring onions and ricotta and thought they were for a crustless quiche but can I find the recipe that contains both items? No! So does anyone have a crustless quiche recipe that requires ricotta and spring onions please? Or something else I can make with the two ingredients- I never buy either! TIA x

NotDonna · 07/06/2024 12:42

thanks @MissBeck I’m wanting to avoid pastry hence going crustless! But I guess any tart recipe could be made without the pastry? Your first recipe uses flour - how bizarre! Don’t think I’ve ever seen flour in a quiche filling recipe before. And the second said serve with crusty bread, which made me giggle as why would ppl be wanting a crustless quiche if they were going to serve with bread? I’ll probs try make that one though but not serve with the baguette! Huge thanks for finding these! I’ve no clue what happened to the recipe I found.

MissBeck · 07/06/2024 12:45

@NotDonna Oh! Sorry. 😂I really should have read through them first!

DrBlackbird · 07/06/2024 16:34

Have to say that I was a bit disappointed to only be down another .5lbs at the end of last week but will persevere. I have cut out all the garbage crisps, biscuits, cakes and that’s got to be something.

Bex5490 · 07/06/2024 18:44

@MissBeck Turkish basically equals posh kebabs and grilled meats! Delicious!

@Pleaseandthankyou I hope the day got better as it went along. I know the feeling of having to hide stress and pretend everything is chipper… it can be bloody exhausting. Sometimes a diet or lifestyle change is a great way to distract yourself and concentrate on doing something positive for yourself. I’d bet good money that your stresses come from things that don’t put you and your needs first.

@NotDonna Ricotta is yum. I bet which ever variation of cheesy quiche will be delish!

@BIWI Where do we stand on peanut butter? Are there any good ones? I love a little with my raspberries but have abstained through fear of the sugar and the big stick…

I’m finally allowed to do cardio after my c-section so started with a less than graceful jog this morning. It’s crazy when you think that a whole hour’s run is basically the equivalent of eating one croissant…

Glorianna · 07/06/2024 20:26

Hi all, any idea why I may have gained 3 pounds in a week? I’ve been very good with boot camp, no cheating.

The only things that I wonder about:

  • Apart from 3 meals, I had a square sauce of mozzarella cheese or 1 Babybel as an afternoon snack
  • I had a teaspoon of cream in my coffee twice a day
  • 4/5 strawberries per day

I was constipated but this has resolved.

I’m familiar with a weight loss stall of a few weeks but this is the first time I’ve put on 3lb in one week whilst LCBC.

Any idea what this could be? Could it be water retention?

Thanks

MissBeck · 07/06/2024 20:27

Well I haven't eaten much today after yesterdays shenanigans, but I haven't really been hungry. 😇
B: Slither of cheese
L: small bag of scratchings
D: pork steak and mushrooms

@Bex5490 I really should get back into some sort of exercise, but I couldn't do running. I'd wet myself by the time I got to the end of the road! 😂

FinallyHere · 07/06/2024 20:32

@Goodiewhemper and @Baystard sorry the 'Rona has hit you both. Hope you feel better soon.

@OpalTiger I love the sound of your delicious eating out on plan

Waves to @Jollyholibobs welcome back

@lastchancesalmon re what to do with a 'left over' burger if either chop it up like a cold sausage and add it to salad or include it in a smorgasbord style evening meal, and avoid myself just mindlessly consuming it standing in from of the fridge while working out what to eat. Society to consume mindlessly

SpellitwithaY · 07/06/2024 20:54

I'm home and made it through the day well.

B - Yog and a few berries followed by bacon one sausage and mushrooms
L - ham cheese and salami and half a sausage (shamelessly stolen from breakfast) and a Sainsbury's ploughman's pot Id taken with me
D - a burger with some cheese and some salad. Still a bit undecided.... I'll see what's in the fridge

Took nearly 3 hours to drive home and I'm bloody knackered. Just going to get the smalls to bed eat and the retire. (I mean catch up on here obvs)

Hope you all had a good day. I'm Looking forward to weighing tomorrow to see how I've fared. I've done my best but still was a bit out of my control

Koko 😁

Not sure if you mean that you’ve only cut out crisps, biscuits and cakes or that it’s good that they’re amongst the carbs you’ve ceased eating?

DrBlackbird · 07/06/2024 21:31

Hi @NotDonna they’re amongst the carbs I’m not eating. Along with no bread, pasta, potatoes, rice etc. I’ve been using some of the lovely recipes mentioned in the spreadsheet and threads. Tons of veg and lots of protein. I’m also cutting back on the cheese. Hardly ever drink 2 to 3l though.

prettybird · 07/06/2024 21:38

@Bex5490 - peanut butter is fine after the 1st two weeks - as long as it's not one with added sugar. Check the ingredients, but iirc Whole Earth is fine Smile

Lougle · 07/06/2024 23:11

I've just caught up and I think you're all fantastic. I definitely feel more accountable when I join these threads. I have been gluten free since mid March. I very quickly decided that I didn't want to eat the GF substitute breads, etc., because they don't taste all that nice, so what's the point of eating them? Now that I'm low carb as well, I look at something with higher carbs and think 'Well if I'm not having <insert really yummy carby thing> then there's no point falling off the wagon by eating that <insert nice-but-not-all-that carby thing>.' It helps.

I have IBD and I'm feeling quite dejected. I've been in a flare for a while, but have been a bit sloppy about my meds (one is taken 3 times per day and I normally forget the mid day dose). I have been having trouble using the loo because my insides are sore so my body retains, but I thought it resolved. I decided to religiously take my meds and I'm no better today. I've decided to give it a week of religious medication taking, then I'll make a GP appointment.
