Week 4 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - the end of the first half!

BIWI · 03/06/2024 07:03

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet

So this week sees us reaching the end of the first half - so 'only' another 4 to go!

Remember that week 4, along with week 3, can be a tough week from the POV of weight loss, so if things look like they're slowing down/stopping, despite your best efforts, don't be downhearted. We see this every Bootcamp, without fail! Just KOKO (and make sure you're following the rules, of course), and things will get going again.

We took advantage of the lovely weather yesterday to have our first barbecue of the year. Can't believe we had to wait until June! But I love a barbecue as it's so easy from a low carb perspective. On the menu this time we had:

  • halloumi in lemon, garlic and coriander dressing
  • home-made beef burgers (just beef mince, with some added olive oil and salt/pepper/mixed herbs), with fried onions and plastic cheese (It's got to be plastic cheese!) DH/DC had their in buns, I had mine 'naked'.
  • chicken breast fillets, on skewers, which had been marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and fresh oregano
  • sausages
  • aubergine, served with FFGY into which I'd added the zest of a mandarin, and a little bit of its juice
And to go with this I'd made coleslaw, a green salad and (for the rest of the family) potato salad.

Loads left, so I know what I'm having for lunch!

Sadly the weather doesn't look like it's going to be anything like as nice for the rest of the week Sad
However, I hope you all have a good week. @MissBeck I haven't seen either of those books before, so looking forward to hearing your review!

Thank you @BIWI for your wise words! You're absolutely right, I have a very healthy appetite, so my portion sizes could definitely be smaller (and I really don't like the idea of counting calories; I love how free this WoE is and don't want to mess with that). I've done 16:8 for about 5 years now (which I also love). I also have to remember that my pain has decreased, I'm slowly losing in terms of inches and that I feel great eating like this, so not to focus on a number. Thank you!

@prettybird I'm off to look up the muffin recipe; I like the sound of slathering them in butter...

MissBeck · 05/06/2024 20:32

@Bootcamp272 Great weight loss! Hope you get over Covid soon!

@Bex5490 Mine won't touch pasta or rice. Doesn't like the texture! Of course! 😁She does love her vegetables though, so try to do a roast as often as I can when she's home (she does a lot of evening activities with her boyfriend, so his family feed her which is out of my control). She'll eat all the veggies and leave the meat!! 😱Rude!

@PunksVersusBrats I eat cheese daily. Couldn't do without it!

Had a pretty chill day today! Could have took advantage of the bit of sun we've had and cut the front lawn, but couldn't be arsed! 😁

B: Bacon, mushrooms and tomatos
L: small bag of scratchings (was still full from breakfast)
D: Cheese, onion, mushroom and bacon 3 egg omlette

prettybird · 05/06/2024 20:38

I don't know anything about lipoedema but if you've already used to doing 16:8 and you have no history of eating disorders then you could maybe try the occasional extended fast (48 hours - or even 60 hours if you start after one evening meal and can then make it through to breakfast on the morning of the 3rd day).

I break an extended fast with something gentle but treatworthy like yoghurt and cream (and a few raspberries if I have any).

Maybe do one or two (with a minimum of 2 weeks between then) and see how they go.

I also find extended fasts useful as a way to stop snacking through my bad habit or boredom - and to remind myself what true hunger feels like. Confused

You need to be sure to drink lots of water Grin - but you should be doing that anyway Halo

Hi all

Loving the spreadsheets. Nice to see all those falling lines. Well done everyone. Hope everyone feels a bit better soon if you're under the weather.

I'm just Koko here. I'm going to visit a factory in Stoke tomorrow. It's about 2.6 hours drive for me. Joining a factory tour then I have a course to attend Friday.... The factory makes cakes....

.... If it's fondant fancies on the line tomorrow, I'm done for... HAHA 😂.

I'm taking breakfast (ffgy, cream and berries) with me and lunch (ham and salad) and I bought snacks today. The restaurant in the hotel has a steak just have to sub chips for salad and the breakfast looks ok. So it's just lunch on Friday to navigate but I reckon I could get a basic salad. With the snacks I've bought I think I'll manage ok! Not looking tonight Friday night traffic home though. 😞

B - ffgy cream berries
L - "fishcakes " and salad
D - ham coleslaw cheese and cucumber 🥒

MissBeck · 05/06/2024 21:46

@SpellitwithaY 😱A cake factory!! Oh, good luck with the willpower there!!

Lougle · 05/06/2024 22:06

Late to the party, but if you want the taste of sour cream but the fat and protein of double cream, then just add a squirt of lemon juice to double cream and lightly whip it. Within under a minute you'll have cream the texture of sour cream.

I’m an ASD parent too @MissBeck @Bex5490 @UnOeufIsEnough - my 20yo was diagnosed aged 8 and my 18yo is on an adult waiting list (private through right to choose). It certainly causes some issues around food, in fact food was one of the earliest indicators of ASD for the eldest, who ate everything quite happily from about 6 to 18 months then started refusing things one by one, all the bland things, would only eat curry and the like. He’s still the same, can’t abide bland or plain food, won’t touch potatoes in any shape or form, or plain steamed veg, he lives on curries and spicy/exotic foods, won’t touch a roast dinner. The youngest is the opposite and will only really eat more traditional and bland foods. Both are skinny carb fiends and love pizza and pasta. The joys.

EasilyDefined · 05/06/2024 22:18

I hadn’t realised sour cream was lower in fat and protein than double cream, it seems so thick and rich, obviously its deceptive. I don’t really use any other sort of cream as sour cream is so much nicer, I did for a while freeze cubes of double cream to try and make myself have them in coffee but I couldn’t bear it and ended up going back to milk but less often (average 2-3 cups a week so not too many).

@EasilyDefined Ooh, we have quite the SEN gang! 😃

NotDonna · 06/06/2024 06:51

Another here with neurodiverse kids! How does ‘right to choose’ work? I had to go private as eldest was self harming and attempting suicide. She wouldn’t be alive today if we’d have waited for camhs. It was the psych who picked up the ND issues. Then my youngest’s school highlighted ADHD. She’s the one with food issues, low weight etc. My other two eat most things and are easy. But the youngest (15) has no appetite so it’s a constant struggle to get calories in. This makes it harder for me as I’m surrounded by and cooking a lot of high carb foods for her!

EasilyDefined · 06/06/2024 06:57

@NotDonna there is a private clinic called Psychiatry UK if you look at their website it explains, you can ask to be referred to them by your GP if you are over 18 and in England (possibly not all areas). There is still a waiting list but not as long as regular NHS. DD had to do some screening tests and send the results to the GP.

NotDonna · 06/06/2024 07:39

@EasilyDefined ahhh she was under 18 when she was seriously ill. It was also at the beginning of covid so was all 'teams'. The child psych was eye wateringly expensive but was the only option we had. I feel a bit ill thinking about those dark days. She's much better now thank heavens. Sorry to derail!

Im REALLY up on the scales today despite being angelic yesterday. But for me, when i go off the plan it tends to hit a couple of days later. So stupid of me and I'm so very very annoyed at myself - i had too much wine, several days in a row. 🙄Anyway, back in the saddle.

Lougle · 06/06/2024 07:43

I've had a whoosh today. I've had an IBD flare for a while, so was struggling with it a bit. Suddenly I've lost 0.7kg overnight. I need to take my medication religiously for a week or two, then if it doesn't work, I'll go to the GP.

BIWI · 06/06/2024 07:44

Sorry to hear of all the SEN woes. Many, many times on MN I read posts about SEN/ND children and thank my lucky stars that my DC are NT. We've had (and still have, despite them being adults now!) many moments with them, but those are just the 'normal' woes of parenting. And I'd wager that 14 years of Tory (mis)rule and austerity really haven't helped any of you Sad

It's enough to turn you to drink! Oh no ... Grin

I'm away for the next couple of days (Christmas present from DH - overnight trip to Rye) so won't be around til late Friday. Although, as usual, I'll probably drop in every now and then.

NotDonna · 06/06/2024 07:56

Oooh enjoy Rye BIWI I don’t think I’ve ever been.

BIWI · 06/06/2024 08:00

Well this is our second trip this year. I bought DH an overnight stay for Christmas (which we took in February) and he also bought an overnight stay for me for Christmas! Different hotel this time - and hopefully different weather!

Morning all!

@NotDonna Hey!! Welcome to the SEN club! 😂I'd like to say it's free, but I'm sure we're all paying a hefty price for membership! 😆

@Lougle Great news about your whoosh! I'm still yet to experience one!

@BIWI Have a great trip to Rye! (Are you taking the big stick??)

Today I am being picked up for lunch by my Dad for a late birthday lunch. He asked where I wanted to go, and I suggested our local carvery. Meat and veg! What can go wrong?? 😋

Lougle · 06/06/2024 08:44

Oh do enjoy @MissBeck!

MissBeck · 06/06/2024 08:51

Lougle · 06/06/2024 08:44

Oh do enjoy @MissBeck!

Oh I will @Lougle My daughter isn't happy as we've chosen lunchtime instead of evening, so she could come, but it will just be nice to be somewhere without having her there shouting 'choo choo' or 'penis' at everyone and telling them 'You're deader than my Dad!' (which he is by the way). Tourettes is a bitch when planning outings! 😂😂

TheOnlyMrsW · 06/06/2024 09:20

Another ND mum here, still waiting for a formal diagnosis (14 months and counting since the school referral went in) and one of the many ways it "presents" is DD's limited food choices. She is getting better but would happily eat beige food all day every day with the odd injection of vegetables if we let her! On the whole copes fairly well but the slightest thing can erupt into major drama...............exam stress is NOT helping. Solidarity to you all Flowers Wine(alcohol free obvs!).

I've had an increase as well but trying not to dwell as a good few days under my belt so trusting the process........last working day for me this week, tomorrow will be a mixture of errands, attempting to put the house back together after the roofers finish and taxi-ing. Planning another omelette for brunch and then leftover beef casserole with broccoli for dinner, the carbies are on pasta as it's training/band night so quick and hearty is the order of the day!

BIWI have a lovely trip, MissBeck I love a good carvery (although the last one I went to had mac and cheese as part of the sides which was very odd!)

EasilyDefined · 06/06/2024 12:28

I like a carvery too and as the roast potatoes and yorkies are usually not a patch on homemade its easier to say no to them. Gravy is the problem, I'm not keen on dry neat and veg and can't abide creamy or cheesy veg with a roast and hate it when they put butter on the veg, it totally ruins them, hotels are buggers for that.

prettybird · 06/06/2024 12:35

In a NSV, I'm wearing my new Size 12 jeans today (because my old ones had worn through between the thighs Blush). They're a bit tight as they've not been pre stretched through wear Wink - but they're not too uncomfortable Smile

In an SV, I've checked back and I'm exactly two weeks ahead of where I was this time last year, at 12st 4.5lb Halo

Enjoy your time in a nice hotel BIWI Flowers

MissBeck · 06/06/2024 17:18

Oh people, I've been soooo bad! The carvery was fantastic! I had all four meats (Gammon, pork, beef and turkey), a yorkshire pudding 😲1 large roastie 😖stuffing 😩cauliflour cheese, apple sauce and gravy!! 😱My drink was an Appletize 😬and then I had....... Apple and raspberry crumble with whipped cream!! 😱😵🤐And it was all fecking lovely!!!!!! 😂😂Bring on the big stick!!! I'll pay the price!! 😜

I know it was totally self sabotage but I'm in this WOE for the long haul, (Well, not todays WOE 😁) so I am totally prepared for a weight rise in the next couple of days and will take it on the chin! I had been looking forward to this meal for weeks and wanted to enjoy it.

@TheOnlyMrsW I'm familiar with major drama and the coke bottle effect! 😉

@prettybird excellent news on the jeans and the weight comparison!

Lougle · 06/06/2024 18:11

Oh @MissBeck 😂 I thought you were going to say 'I had all four meats and I was so full.', but you really did go to town. I guess if you're going to slip, slip hard 😂

😂😂I went in so headstrong, determined to blank out all the goodies, but it was just all there, laid out in front of me!! I hope @SpellitwithaY didn't do the same at the cake factory she went to today! 😂
