General Low Carb Bootcamp Chat

Although I generally keep a chat thread going at the end of each Bootcamp, I think it would be better to have an ongoing chat thread that isn't linked to a specific Bootcamp.

So here it is. A sparkly new thread, for all things low carb and Bootcamp chat. As well as anything else you'd like to chat about!

Feel free to chat about anything you like here.

Has anyone else experimented with low carb pastry??

After the success of bread using vital wheat gluten as the magic ingredient, I've just had a not unsuccessful attempt at chicken pie using similar ingredients with a sort of flat puff pastry.

BIWI · 17/01/2022 18:22

I bought some low carb flour from The Low Carb Food company and tried to make pizza bases with it. It wasn't very successful, and it put me off trying again.

I went to the cupboard the other day thinking I might try to make pastry, but it had gone past its sell-by date, so I've junked it.

Can anyone recommend a FREE calorie counting app? All the ones I download want me to pay! Ta

BIWI · 17/01/2022 21:37

Why do you want a calorie counting app? We don't count calories on Bootcamp!

@BIWI I just want to know for my own interest

BIWI · 17/01/2022 21:47

MyFitnessPal might be helpful then - as far as I know that's a free app. It will also give you figures for carbs too, as well as fat and protein.

Putting this here rather than on the actual bootcamp thread, but I'm going to have to step out of BC and proper low carbing for a while. The first week of January I cut out sugar, which was fine. The second week of January I cut out flour, which was fine. 3lbs down in 2 weeks. I started bootcamp and in three days (on top of normal meals) I've eaten 4 Magnums, 8 slices of toast and just had an entire box of chocolate biscuits for lunch. Something about taking that last step with losing rice and potatoes is just tipping me into bingeing at the moment, so I'm going to stick at just cutting out sugar and flour for now and then reassess if I plateau above where I need to be.

Best of luck to everyone with BC, hopefully be back at some point when I have my head sorted out!

BIWI · 19/01/2022 12:49

Good luck @VeryLittleOwl

You know you can do it, so hop back on board whenever you're ready!

@VeryLittleOwl I used to be a terrible binger with chocolate, crisps and bread.

Then from one of the other bootcamp threads that I lurked on I learnt about seriously low carb bread and for some reason once I've got a few loaves of that stashed in the freezer I feel "safe" and it stops me from bingeing. Because I know I can still have toast, sandwiches, fried bread, toasties, croque monsieur etc any time I want then I'm fine. I don't feel deprived at all. I don't eat too much of it as it's expensive but it stops me feeling like I have restricted food choices.

Also for crisp substitutes I got some of those popped cheese crisps and I always keep some in the cupboard for when I want something crunchy although knowing they are there and I can always have them stops me actually wanting them very often.

I know what works for me might not work for you but my mentality has always been that when I can't have something I want it all the more and then I binge on it. But with seriously low carb bread and popped cheese crisps (cheesies I think they're called) I feel like I've out-manouevred myself and finally I'm finding this a doddle to stick to.

I've never even heard of low carb bread before. Is it any good? How low carb is it?

byebyecarbs · 20/01/2022 06:02

@Zonder I love it. It's got 0.9g of carbs per slice and to me it's as good as normal bread. They also do bread rolls which are about 3g of carbs each but they're really big but it means you can have burgers too. I always found low carbing a bit inconvenient before as I am not very organised but this bread makes it much easier.

Zonder · 20/01/2022 06:19

Sounds amazing @byebyecarbs - should I look for a particular make?

byebyecarbs · 20/01/2022 06:39

This is it - not cheap but worth every penny I think. seriouslylowcarb.com/products/the-low-carb-loaf

Waves to @VeryLittleOwl Your post really resinated with me. Thank you for posting and sharing this, rather than just sloping off, as I usually do.

It's always been sugar / sweet taste that stalks me

When you are ready for some input, you might find something of interest in Gillian Riley's deceptively simple approach https://eatingless.com

It really works for me, to consider my appetite for sugar and sweet things generally an addiction, akin to tobacco and other drugs.

No diet advice in the book, which is rather based on stopping smoking. I was very glad to have confirmed that low carb foods are the least addictive, while the more processed foods are more likely to trigger addiction.

AThroneOfLies · 20/01/2022 18:58

@byebyecarbs where do you purchase Cheesies from? I’ve not seen them in Tesco/Asda but maybe I’m looking in the wrong place

BIWI · 20/01/2022 20:44

I bought mine online, although I think Sainsbury's now sell them.

OP posts:
byebyecarbs · 20/01/2022 21:19

I get mine from amazon or Ocado but as BIWI said I think they're in Sainsbury's too. They're really good and they have different flavour cheeses too.

Minkymoo74 · 09/02/2022 18:08

In 3 weeks I am 11lb down. I'm still amazed that this works. I have never lost more than 1-2 a week on other eating plans :D
I want 1 stone next week :) Good luck everyone xxx

prettybird · 09/02/2022 18:32
