Although I generally keep a chat thread going at the end of each Bootcamp, I think it would be better to have an ongoing chat thread that isn't linked to a specific Bootcamp.

So here it is. A sparkly new thread, for all things low carb and Bootcamp chat. As well as anything else you'd like to chat about!

Feel free to chat about anything you like here.

@BIWI thank you Flowers

Can I also ask, if I fall off the wagon, will that totally fuck the whole thing and I won’t be fat adapted anymore?

BIWI · 10/01/2022 20:42

Pretty much!

You can switch between carb-burning and fat burning, but TBH it's much better if you stay in fat-burning, as this is what's going to help you to lose weight.

But surely you're not planning on falling off the wagon already, are you?!

It's going really well here and I feel as though I've regained control of my eating as during December it felt completely out of control and I was eating crisps with wild abandon.

I'm excited for bootcamp next week and going hardcore. I'm really enjoying not being a slave to my appetite and feeling like I can take or leave food. I'd forgotten how effective this way of eating is when you do it properly.

Anyway I'm in work early today so I will take some seriously low carb bread and lurpak with me and have toast at some point this morning and then I'm going to have chilli (no kidney beans) with cauliflower rice again later as it was so good yesterday.

prettybird · 11/01/2022 08:15

I'm feeling the effects of doing the Shred yesterday which is strangely satisfying Smile

Zoom Pilates class later today Smile

hapusrwydd · 11/01/2022 08:26

Morning all

I'm another runner (jogger really) who is finding it hard going at the moment, pace hasn't changed but feels like more effort needed.

Is it normal to feel tired when you first start low carb? I was going to run yesterday but was so utterly exhausted I slumped into bed instead

Pleaseandthankyou · 11/01/2022 08:34

I started yesterday. Had a rough weekend. Still feeling the effects of COVID that I had weeks ago. Felt sorry for myself and just binged on carbs. Scales have reacted accordingly, jeans are tight. Yesterday had
Scrambled eggs
Mushroom soup (home made) and slc not cross bun
Carbonara made with cabbage - bit of a revelation!
This is the highest weight I have been in well over a year. Christmas didn’t do too much damage. Determined to stay on plan.

AllTheBlackCoffee · 11/01/2022 08:40

I'm feeling the effects of my run yesterday and get what you're saying @prettybird - nothing quite like a post exercise ache to make you feel all warm and glowing inside. Am going to do a Joe Wickes workout after work today, I find they are really good for helping to shed the fat without being too long or complicated to follow.

Today's plan:

B: coffee
L: leftover chilli bake, sour cream, salad with dressing
D: chicken and blue cheese casserole, broccoli

Have a good day everyone Smile

cheeseisthebest · 11/01/2022 09:27

Are the joe wickes workouts on YouTube?

ouchmyfeet · 11/01/2022 09:55

Morning all, I'm starting today as most of the Christmas crap is now out of the house. Egg in a cup for breakfast and working on the water. Got a Bol for lunch which is too carby for proper bootcamp but I've judged it okay for easing in week. Meatballs for tea with shredded cabbage for me and pasta for the gang 💪💪💪

ouchmyfeet · 11/01/2022 09:56

Yes, search for the body coach

Can I still do low carb without a gallblader? Hospital just phoned, they've booked me in for surgery 22nd this month!

BIWI · 11/01/2022 10:15

I think so - but I'm no medic or scientist, Buffy. @StuntNun might know/be able to help?

OP posts:
BIWI · 11/01/2022 10:17

... but diabetes.co.uk seem to suggest that it's OK:

Gallbladder removed
Whilst the gall bladder contains bile, that helps the body to break down dietary fats, some people report that it is possible to follow a low-carb, high fat diet without a gallbladder

Beachbag is one of our forum members who has been following a low-carb, high-fat diet for a number of years despite having had her gallbladder removed

This should be day 6 of trict bootcamp for me but I fell off the wagon 2 nights ago and had pink gin. Not sure if that put me right back to the start or not, I didn't cheat food-wise. If so then this is day 2 for me Blush

So far had a strong creamy coffee. Studying at my parents house so DD2 can play with her DGD. I've brought with me low carb bread, butter, cream and coconut oil, not sure what breakfast and lunch will look like yet! Pork chops with FLGV for dinner and loads and loads of water!

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 11/01/2022 10:21

Thankyou BIWI that's brilliant! Apart from my (hopefully) minor hiccup I really do want to change my overall WOE to low carb rather than seeing it as a diet for a while. DP gave up but still enjoys low carb meals I make so should keep things easy Smile

hapusrwydd · 11/01/2022 10:21

@BIWI it's not when I'm running I'm tired - it's all the blinking time!

BIWI · 11/01/2022 10:25

Yes @hapusrwydd it's all part of the transition. Don't worry, once you are fat-adapted, you will find that you have more energy than ever! You should be fine in a few days - keep up the fat and water, as that will help too.

hapusrwydd · 11/01/2022 11:10

Gotcha! Off to load up on fats.

StuntNun · 11/01/2022 12:43

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayer I’m answering in a non-medical capacity so you will probably want to double check with your medical team. However it should be absolutely fine to follow a high fat way of eating without a gall bladder. Two things I would suggest: don’t rapidly increase your fat intake all at once (it should be fine if you’re already fat-adapted ahead of your surgery); and it might be a good idea to avoid things like bulletproof coffee where a lot of pure fat hits your system at once. Normal fat in food will be okay because it takes time to digest and the protein will affect the absorption rate. Whereas a bulletproof coffee can be quite hard on the system for everyone if you’re not used to it and without a gall bladder it might cause some abdominal distress.

BIWI · 11/01/2022 12:57

... and we generally don't recommend bulletproof coffee on Bootcamp anyway!

Prinnny · 11/01/2022 13:13

Today for me is:
Lunch - bacon, sausage, fried egg, mushroom and spinach and a slice of low carb bread with lashings of lurpak…was divine!
Dinner - chicken fried in garlic butter with halloumi salad

I’ve got my hands on a celeriac…how do I turn this thing into chips?!

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 11/01/2022 13:16

Thanks @StuntNun really helpful and informative as always! And reassuring I can carry on. I was asking because people in a gallbladder thread were talking about how they struggled with any type of fat in their diet after the operation so wasn't sure. I'm going into hospital on Friday for pre-surgery assessments so I'll get clarification then as well.

Sorry @BIWI Blush (puts butter and coconut oil away and backs away from the kettle sheepishly)

StuntNun · 11/01/2022 13:30

@Prinnny I slice off the flat side with a very sharp knife then slice off the outside layer all way round. It's too thick and uneven for a potato peeler so you need to use a knife. Then slice thickly and cut into chips. It's very fibrous so you don't need as big a portion as with potato chips. Also celeriac chips don't crisp up so I prefer to make them into dirty fries instead of plain ones. Once they're cooked (I deep fry them or you can oven them) put them in a baking dish and cover with fried onion and bacon pieces, sliced jalapeños if you fancy it, grated cheese on top then bake or grill until the cheese melts. I think @RagzReturnedUnwrapped invented this recipe on a previous Bootcamp.

StuntNun · 11/01/2022 13:37

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayer I'm no expert but we have had Bootcampers without gall bladders before. All it does is store bile and release it as required. Your liver will still produce the bile you need to digest fats but it will continuously enter your digestive system. So if you're used to a low fat intake and suddenly increase it then you're going to overwhelm the system and have pain, bloating etc. As long as you're sensible then you'll be fine. Just be aware if something does cause you digestive issues so you can either avoid it or eat a smaller quantity or eat it more slowly. It's a large amount of fat hitting your stomach at once that's going to cause an issue, not high fat foods per se.
