This Bootcamp has gone crazy! I'm very hopeful that means that the results on the scales/with the tape measure etc will have been positive.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I love this week. For so many, it's a total vindication as well as complete reassurance that this WOE really works!

I hope, very much, that the scales are kind to you and look forward to hearing everyone's progress.

@LittleMissPlump : for salad dressings, I just make my own with EV olive oil and a wee bit of wine or apple vinegar (roughly 3 tbsps to 1 tbsp), a tiny bit of grain mustard and salt & pepper whisked together. If I can be bothered, I'll add a mashed garlic clove - but most of the time not Wink

cheeseisthebest · 31/01/2021 09:49

Today we have a huge roast chicken for tea, going to make cauliflower cheese (low carb) plus cabbage, sprouts, Swede. Yum. Going to make broccoli and stilton soup and poss smoked salmon with cheesy scrambled eggs for breakfast.
And 4.5 pints of water to hit my target!

cheeseisthebest · 31/01/2021 09:54

Will dig out my pad thai recipe and chicken tray bake recipe too.

Welcome @OakSnows

Think I’m going to spend about a week reading and learning and shopping and start a week Monday

Good plan - make sure you've read all the rules, which are on the spreadsheet, along with lots of resources that will help you understand Bootcamp.

You need to know, though, that Bootcamp isn't keto - although we keep our carbs low, we don't count them. Keto is, as far as I understand it, much stricter, with a daily allowance of no more than 20g carbs.

What apps/websites etc do people use? Happy to pay for some of them if they are genuinely helpful, think I’d rather real food than shakes etc

I don't use any apps, although I know some do. Some people use one to help them drink the amount of water that they should do. And definitely agree about the real food! This is exactly what we advocate on Bootcamp - real food, that's as unprocessed as possible.

Welcome too to @LittleMissPlump (you'll have to change that username soon!)

I really need to make some changes to my eating habits and the thought of not feeling hungry between meals is very appealing!

It's one of the most important benefits of a low carb diet, and it's what helps us to stay 'on course'. People are often criticised for having no willpower when it comes to dieting, and it couldn't be further from the truth. A high carbohydrate diet - which is inevitably what you end up eating if you cut out fat - means that you will be getting hungry between meals, and thus easily tempted to 'give in' and eat something. Because a low carb diet helps to keep your blood sugar levels even you won't find this happening to you. (Although this will take a couple of weeks to take effect).

I’m sorry if these questions have been asked before

As you're new, you're forgiven Grin. However, one of the things that I do ask people is that they read all the posts on each Bootcamp chat thread, as otherwise you'll miss out on lots of stuff, and it becomes very irritating to have to answer the same questions again!

what are people eating for breakfast?

Anything they want - as long as it's low carb! It's only because of Mr Kellogg that we think we have to eat special food at breakfast time. That said, yoghurt and eggs feature a lot in people's diets (if they're eating breakfast - after the first two weeks of Bootcamp you can skip breakfast if you want to, which means you'll be introducing intermittent fasting)

And is there a lactose free version of the full fat Greek yogurt available does anyone know?

it looks like Tesco makes one, and it's also high fat, which is good!

Third and final question but what dressings are people using for their salads?

The best dressing is one that you've made yourself. Shop-bought ones often have sugar in them, which is what we're trying to avoid. So an oily dressing like a vinaigrette - here are quantities for a basic vinaigrette:

3-5 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil (adjust the amount of oil to suit your taste, but try to keep it on the higher side)
1 tablespoon of wine or cider vinegar (not balsamic vinegar as this is too carby, unlike wine/cider vinegars)
salt and pepper to taste

You can add to this - so either Dijon or wholemeal mustard, or some finely chopped garlic, or a little horseradish.

Otherwise, a good mayonnaise - just watch the carb count, as these do vary.

Thanks so much in advance of your help... I’m really excited that this way of eating might bring me some calmness to my anxiety and to my relationship with food

I think and hope that it will! You'll certainly find lots of help, support and general friendship on Bootcamp Flowers

I do love this boot camp.

It feels more mates camp really.

BIWI · 31/01/2021 09:59

@venusandmars that duck confit recipe sounds fantastic. I've bought some duck confit from a meat supplier that we've been using recently, but often thought I could do it myself

Thank you for all the supportive messages. Love you guys! Sorry for taking the conversation off-topic.

2lbs on this morning. It can only be the 2 glasses of red wine I had last night. No more alcohol now til Friday.

Got a sodding long run scheduled for today. The weather is nice. It's got to be done. But for now I sit here scrolling through SM in my dressing gown 🤣

Saag paneer planned for dinner.

BIWI · 31/01/2021 10:02

@cheeseisthebest

Hmm yes good point not much fat in phad thai but it was delicious and very filling!

It's the fibre in the Bare Naked noodles, as well as the veg, that will be filling you up. But that doesn't mean that you can leave out the fat. It's really, really important that you make sure you're eating plenty of fat.

Thanks for the crunchy tips! Will switch out the soup for a romaine, cucumber salad with smoked salmon, avo and inspired by @BIWI Post on dressings a horseradish dressing.

Welcome newbies, it is super friendly and positive here.

@BIWI your comments to cheese reminding me not to snack. Not sure why it's so hard! I think I actually really enjoy eating in and of itself which is a bit Blush

AWryGiraffe · 31/01/2021 10:04

@BIWI ah I know, it's also not high fat enough. Sometimes it's just easier in adapting a meal to suit a meat eater and a toddler if it's just the one switch. I used to eat a lot of beans and pulses though which are obviously out. I'm going to get some tofu in (I really miss going to Manchester to get the puffed tofu from the Chinese supermarket, so much nicer than silken/firm) and will use that more, as well as halloumi, aubergine etc.

Definitely takes more planning as a veggie for sure.

@AWryGiraffe I know it's harder as a veggie. Can you not find an online source of that tofu? Lots of restaurants have turned to home delivery during lockdown, so you might get lucky there.

Have you checked out the vegetarian recipe thread - stickied at the top of the Low Carb Bootcamp topic? Lots of good recipes there. And also, Rose Elliott's low carb recipe book is good

Thanks so much for the warm welcome and the brilliant advice! I really am grateful. Off to read up on all the science behind this woe. Smile

For the newbies, it’s worth understanding that we don’t just eat lots of fat because it’s helpful in staying full. It’s actually an integral piece to the fat burning puzzle as it keeps everything running properly.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 31/01/2021 10:15

My oil tank replacement came in at £100 less than expected, meaning my food budget is back on for the rest of the month

However. You'd be amazed how much not-£100 you can spend on green vegetables, living in a rural house in Scotland in Winter, miles from the nearest village, and 25 miles from the nearest supermarket.

Clue: zero. Not one green vegetable to be had in the village, nor any creamy, whitey, beigey ones either. Sigh. Still on the freezer sprouts and broccoli for the foreseeable.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 31/01/2021 10:16

@AthelstaneTheUnready can you take in some ironing? Wink

WitchWand · 31/01/2021 10:17

Taking me ages to read the thread . But so lovely to read all the contributions from everyone.
Interesting about the ADHD stuff. And loving the recipes.

Thanks for the photos of the egg drops. They look more appetising than they sound to be honest.

@MrsOmelette Where did you find your recipe for Chocolate Torte please ?

AthelstaneTheUnready · 31/01/2021 10:22

This is absolutely true!

If you don't eat a lot of fat, your body doesn't make many fat-burning enzymes to break it down (why would it?).

So if you don't have many fat-burning enzymes, it's going to take ages for the few ones you do have to work through your body fat. Except most of the time they won't bother because there are carbs in your diet/system providing instant energy.

The more fat you eat, the more fat-burning enzymes you produce to deal with the greater intake. So when you've digested your meal they go looking for more fat to deal with - ie your stored body fat.

One of the reasons not to snack - give them time to go looking for that body fat.

This is the simpleton's (lies-to-children) guide, I'm afraid, not having done chemistry past age 14 Blush

Or a lodger perhaps?

Only if the police wish to find a body with an iron embedded in its skull under the patio.
@AthelstaneTheUnready are you, in fact, a lighthouse keeper?
Hah! Grin

No, just... really... rural in an area that doesn't believe in fresh veg to start with. The village co-op has 3 aisles of crisps, sweets, jams, one aisle of bread and cake, and one aisle of wine/lager. There are occasionally sacks of potatoes for sale, and one courgette on special occasions.

And don't get me started on the local butcher "no, there's no call for fatty meat here, we cut it off, and no, we can't save you some with fat, nobody eats that round here."...

I go to the next village down (just 16 miles) where the butcher is just ACE. He will give me the end of the ham which is just solid fat, and his brisket is heavenly. The fatty steaks will make your mouth water from the bottom of the street. He only sells from the local farms as well, which soothes my environmental soul a bit.
