This Bootcamp has gone crazy! I'm very hopeful that means that the results on the scales/with the tape measure etc will have been positive.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I love this week. For so many, it's a total vindication as well as complete reassurance that this WOE really works!

I hope, very much, that the scales are kind to you and look forward to hearing everyone's progress.

@Almahart - Aldi's regional cheeses are also very good. They do a really lovely Red Fox (think it's a red Leicester) which has the most amazing, deep almost caramel flavour to it. And Scottish cheddar too is great.

@Motivateinmotion I use this one, Taylor and Colledge- ingredients are water, alcohol, vanilla beans.

@nowlook

I'm also drinking so much water and tea, but seem to have an unquenchable thirst. Should I worry?

That's a sign that you need more salt. Sounds odd, I know!

Most of all, I'm just a bit tired of all the suffocating misery in the news

Me too. But trying to focus on the positives - my very lovely SIL has just had her first jab. Looks like we should be up for ours by the middle/end of March (assuming Europe don't manage to get hold of our stocks Shock).

And the days are getting longer, so Spring is coming!

@ShagMeRiggins thank you for the compliment that I went fishing for I don't mind being sloppy seconds Grin

I'm up this morning despite being good for the last couple of days. V frustrating. Maybe it's the cheating catching up with me

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 29/01/2021 09:40

@BIWI I had to hastily come up with something extra yesterday, when the cauliflower which was due to be the bulk of our meal turned out to be the smallest I’d ever seen! I wonder if they’re picking them early due to demand - the week before there were none available from Tesco.

BIWI · 29/01/2021 09:41

@venusandmars

I made the cheese sauce using BIWI's easy recipe - amazing and the squeeze of lemon juice made all the difference. Great tip

It's amazing the difference it makes! People never believe me, but it really does add something. Very glad you liked it Smile

Best thing is that there are some left over veg, and some left over sauce, so they are in the fridge waiting for the right indulgent moment to be eaten

That would be soon, surely?! Any veg baked in cheese sauce is a winner in my book. With more cheese on top, just to be sure ...

Massive swede arrived last night. Some destined for swede and leek mash and some for that swede gratin thing someone posted

I was listening to Jay Rayner's podcast The Kitchen Cabinet yesterday, the Burns night edition, and someone asked about other ways to cook a swede. One of the panel suggested treating it like a ham - so peel it, score the flesh and stud with cloves, and then roast it whole (it was a long cook time - I think about 2 hours?). Then glaze it; they used maple syrup and mustard I think. That's obviously not Bootcamp-friendly, but it did make me wonder about trying something like this!

We had the extra cheesy cauliflower cheese for supper last night. It was lush Smile.

....which reminds me, there is leftover cheesy sauce sitting in the oven Grin had to be put there to be safe from the cats Hmm

I have low-level hypochondria (the sort that doesn't go to the doctors because, what's the point, it's terminal) so I'd got diabetes by 3pm

Rest in peace

@ShagMeRiggins that really made me laugh Grin

@wanderlove

I've stepped on the scales this morning and I'm up 3lbs from yesterday. Gutted and I don't understand why. Food was spot on yesterday---I had Greek yoghurt with cream, tuna Maya salad, chicken tikka kebabs with salad and garlic Mayo. All full fat and salads dressed in oil.

I'm having coffee with cream--could I be having too much of this? It seems like such a big jump in one day I'm wondering what is going on? I lost 5 lbs last week and seemed to have out over half on over night?

Any advice?

How many coffees? It could be that it's the dairy. I know that I have to be very careful with cream.

That said, your body weight will fluctuate naturally so it could be that too - especially if your period is due.

Try cutting out the dairy and see what happens.

It's also a good idea, if you're not already, to keep a food diary, as this will help you spot if there's a particular trigger - either for weight gain or weight loss

Double check that you're really getting enough fat though - your protein sources are pretty low fat ones. And are you drinking all the water? You should be drinking between 2.5-3 litres of water at your weight.

And finally - remember that the scales aren't always the most reliable way to monitor progress. Have you taken your measurements as well?

@Dailyhandtowelwash

Have you been taking your measurements though? You may find that they have changed, despite what the scales are telling you.

@BIWI I read the same thing about celeriac in the Guardian! Shove the big bastard in a pot and treat it like coca cola ham. Plainly, this won't work on BC though.

Loving the bra chat. Naice underwear is one of my vices. I have a drawer full of Lise Charmel sets because, in the ordinary run of things, their stuff fits me perfectly in a 32D balconette. I've had to buy a couple of fugly Panache Cleo bras in a 32E because of weight gain. I'm not buying anything else until I'm back in the good stuff.

I am Envy at those who retain full busts though. Mine lose their top half volume, but it's better for doing up shirts.

Morning!

Bras & swede-ham: now THAT's how to start a Friday 🎉 Glitterball

I'm in horrible fat-Miles bras. My norks are in the two-hugging-bald-men-from-above category, & are frankly unwieldy. Nice to see other large-nork sufferers on here.

One of my long-term goals is to enjoy buying underwear again.

Today:

B: creamy coffee, yoghurt with cream, cup of tea
L: creamy tuna salad with lots of different salad veg
D: boot camp moussaka with cauli rice & spinach

Just be aware, though, that this does contain sugar:

Organic Bourbon Vanilla Extract (Water, Organic Alcohol, Organic Bourbon Vanilla Pods), Organic Sugar, Fairtrade certified and sourced from Fairtrade producers

The carb count is 5.1g per 100ml, although if you only use a teaspoon that will be a negligible amount of carbs.

I tried that ham in Coke recipe once and it was disgusting. I've never understood why people rave about it! I'm a pretty good cook (modest with it as well Grin) and I know I followed the recipe properly. I definitely used full sugar Coke, not Diet Coke, but the liquor - that Nigella tells you to save to make soup with - smelt and tasted like petrol. Or like what I imagine petrol would taste like, seeing as I've never actually drunk petrol!

We ended up chucking it all away, which was a horrible waste.

Grin Grin Grin

Sorry, it's a great idea, but as a ham lover this really made me laugh.

Imagine the crushing disappointment of slicing into what should be lovely wobbly fat and instead getting...

... a plateful of turnip*. Grin

  • I know, but I'm in Scotland.
AthelstaneTheUnready · 29/01/2021 10:32

Am not a fan of substitute foods in general though. Either eat it, or don't it. But don't pretend it's really something else. (I know this isn't the point with the ham-swede, just pontificating).

Bumbledee · 29/01/2021 10:32

Morning everyone, I’ve been lurking the last two days because the 2 year old and I have Covid symptoms. We’ve sent of the tests in the post but not received any results yet.

I’ve stuck to the LCHF but did have a bowl of dal (red lentils) last night with a blob of butter as it made my throat feel better.

Yesterday
B: mozzarella, tomatoes, avocado and salami
L: grilled salmon and salad
D: a bowl of lentils with butter, pork loin steak and sautéed cabbage

Today:
B: leftover pork with an egg
L: grilled chicken thighs and cauliflower rice with stir fried courgettes
D: TBC most likely to be a takeaway

There seems to be a scarcity of broccoli and aubergine where we are. Lots of cauliflower and courgette available. Waitrose substituted our aubergines with courgette and also sent us the courgette we ordered. We will be living on courgettes and frozen Brussels sprouts until Monday when our next delivery arrives. Thankfully we have enough protein and fat for self isolation.

@prettybird you look lovely! I would be so lucky to look gorgeous when I am nearly 60! I am more likely to have boobs hanging near my thighs by then! 😆

Frty · 29/01/2021 10:37

Morning All!
It's been so lovely the last couple of days that I am itching to go out there and sort out my allotment but weekend forecast looks pretty wintery. I can't wait for spring (this year more than ever).

Thank you for all the swede/ ham tips. I will try this out next time I get my hands on one (sold out where I am).

Dinner today is Aubergine Parmigiana (without the bread-crumbs) and oven-baked chicken in parma ham.

Good day to all!

Ninkanink · 29/01/2021 10:37

I’m the same. I’d rather have something else entirely than try to pretend that cauliflower makes a good pizza base, for example. It seems to work for a lot of other people but it just leaves me totally dissatisfied and very likely to cheat with something else later because that spot just hasn’t been hit. However I am extremely moody with food and pizza is one of my favourite things. I’d rather have one perfect Italian pizza every six months and really, really enjoy it!

I also will never be able to pretend that carrot slices taste just like pepperoni...Hmm Grin

Ninkanink · 29/01/2021 10:39

I actually would try that swede recipe (or something similar) though, just because it’s an interesting approach. But I certainly wouldn’t do it as a ham substitute!

Frty · 29/01/2021 10:39

Haha - we're low on cauliflower and courgettes but plenty of aubergines and courgette.

prettybird · 29/01/2021 10:44

I do make a ham glazed in coke, but because I also coat the game with a mix of dry mustard powder and soft brown sugar and stud it with cloves before pouring the cheap coke over it, I'd never dream of using the gunge liquor for anything else Shock

This was this Christmas's specimen: 6.2kg for the 3/4 of us although ds ate most of it between Christmas Eve and going back to Uni

2nd week of Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp! But our third thread!
Ninkanink · 29/01/2021 10:48

My BIL made the cola ham for Christmas and the ham itself was lovely! We had it cold on Boxing Day, though.

Some years ago we tried Nigella’s brined turkey and omg it was vile. Never, ever again! Thankfully we’d sensibly decided to do a trial run for Thanksgiving so Christmas dinner wasn’t ruined.

Bestbees · 29/01/2021 10:48

@BIWI I heard that on the radio too. I quite like a random sub, love a while roast cauli with yog and spices. Works well with a spiced chicken breast. I just though I just like it, not a sub for meat.

I also love aubergine, cut in half, deep scored and the rub in oil mixed with herbs and spices to match the meal (curried/indian/Turkish) pesto works well too. Top with cheese if it feels right and bake until soft and unctuous.

Making myself hungry here!
