A quick tide thread to tide us over because first thread full. @BIWI probably has a life but as soon as she’s able we WILL ALL MIGRATE TO THE NEW, proper thread.

Salut!

I didn't actually do the cauliflower cheese in the end, will do it tomorrow. Had sprouts and cabbage.

ouchmyfeet · 24/01/2021 20:17

I've had a hungry day today so a few snacks.

B: 2 Heck sausages and a fried egg
L: grilled mushroom "pizzas" with courgette, spring onion, nduja and mozzarella. With homemade coleslaw and spinach salad
D: roast lamb with FLGV
SNACKS (at various points throughout the day) Greek yoghurt, an extra sausage, cheese

Don't think I drank enough water yesterday so have remedied that today. It's harder to remember when you're not sitting at a desk all day.

Feeling quite pleased to have navigated the weekend without slipping up. The kids baked gorgeous brownie and choc pudding stacks from the bake off and I didn't touch a single drop of mixture or eat a finished brownie so with that and no booze I'm feeling quite angelic. Jeans feel looser too so I'm hoping for a decent movement when I get on the scales tomorrow morning.

Only thing bothering me now is my bowels Blush. Every day is normal for me and it's been 3 so far. I'm not uncomfortable though so perhaps it's nothing to worry about. Will keep mainlining the veg and maybe cut down on the eggs

Don’t worry about that - there is far less waste when you eat this way, because your body isn’t bunged up with so much gunk.

ChristMyArse · 24/01/2021 20:28

Evening all,

Another day down.

I was awoken by the small child at 3.30am and I wasn't able to get back to sleep at all. It's been a day of tiredness and pain, consequently I've felt a bit of a grumpy twat all day and have come to bed and dropped 2 sleeping tablet.. I'm am therefore expecting mindless, soundless bliss forthwith.

Today has been -

B smoked salmon and buttery scrambled egg
Bulletproof coffee
L gammon with Flgv in a creamy sauce
D the remains of lunch as couldn't eat it all (agog at this) and a couple of spoon fulls of 10% Greek yoghurt. Turns out it defo needs the cinnamon as not so nice on it's own.

I hope everyone gets descent results tomorrow!!

venusandmars · 24/01/2021 20:59

We got a huge turnip swede in our veg box this week - ready for tomorrow's haggis fest. The last turnip we got was like a cannon ball. I had to get dh to help chop it into quarters. I microwaved it (so I could chop it smaller), boiled it, and then roasted it. Ate the soft bits and threw the rest out. Never had a turnip like it!

We'll be having bash'd neeps tomorrow, but @AthelstaneTheUnready my favourite turnip recipe is: sliced turnip - par boiled; mix with sliced onion and finely sliced cabbage; coat all veg in quarter pound of melted butter and add in lots of grated cheese. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Top with more grated cheese and bake in the oven until everything is soft and delicious. It's sort of like a mix between Lyonnaise potatoes and dauphinoise without the potato

On the turnip / swede debate... my BIL (from far south) was very confused when my dsis reminisced about making turnip lanterns for Halloween. He couldn't imagine how it was possible to hollow out a tiny white turnip and put a tea-light inside Grin but then he didn't understand what a jobby was either Shock

@ShagMeRiggins I'm with you on the delicious restaurant food to finish cooking at home. We've tried various, mostly from local restaurants in the hope that they can survive this shitstorm and we can return again as normal customers. One of my favourites is Wedgwood in Edinburgh They mostly do local delivery, but look out for their 'Celebration Boxes' which I think are available nationwide. Their Burn's Night Supper is obviously closed, but I think next week they launch bookings for their Valentine's meal. It's expensive. You have to stick things in the oven, or pan fry the occasional scallop, but these have been the closest to restaurant quality that I've had over the last year.

By contrast I've tried Rick Stein's delivery and cook at home options and been a bit disappointed. Expensive. Unimaginative sides (e.g. boiled potatoes to be reheated) and stodgy puddings.

Today's saga of the scales continues... I've treated them really nicely, and brought them in from the cold garage to the warm bathroom. Still they were playing up. I've treated them to new batteries, for which I was rewarded by an immediate loss of 10 pounds (fully clothed) Grin. I then took off my heaviest items, the big jumper and the jeans, and I'd put on 15 pounds! Something's not right. If those scales don't settle down and behave tomorrow, they are being replaced.

venusandmars · 24/01/2021 21:04

On a slightly more serious note, @LostaraYil your food list for today looked like you only had one vegetable (cauliflower). You might have had lots of it, but our bodies also thrive on variety. I have no idea what you eat normally, maybe loads and loads of different things, so forgive me.

Lyrata · 24/01/2021 21:15

I was meal prepping today so I’ve been snacking lots.

Breakfast was sausages, egg and creamy coffee
Lunch - spicy sausage soup
Dinner - slow cooked oxtail, beef, marrow, mushroom and tomato stew with creamed spinach, broccoli, tomatoes and radishes

If anyone isn’t tried roasted radishes - they are really good. You need to do LOADS of them though - they shrivel up lots. I would say they halve in size. I did the below for two people today and I would say each tray made two fist sized portions of radishes. The below felt generous, but less than one tray between two wouldn’t be enough (in my opinion). If you cook them very well (until some are probably a touch too done) the water evaporates, the spicy flavour goes, and the flavour is somewhat like a potato.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 24/01/2021 21:19

Oh, that turnip recipe sounds nice, @venusandmars!

There's a bloke up the road with some explosive who might be able to help out as well.

BrassicaBabe · 24/01/2021 21:27

I thought turnips were the white fleshed ones and swede was the yellow one Confused

venusandmars · 24/01/2021 21:33

brassica in Scotland we call them all turnips!

Doilooklikeatourist · 24/01/2021 21:35

Woke up to snow !
Been outside most of the day
Greek yoghurt with cream and vanilla for breakfast
Lunch was grilled crispy bacon , with eggs , bacon and mushrooms cooked in butter
Dinner was roast pork with cauli cheese , cabbage and broccoli
Lots of water and hot black coffee
Had terrible restless legs last night ( which was very annoying , as I remember having this when I was pregnant and youngest child is 23 )
Upped the water and salt , I do love a Halen Mon sea salt crystal or 2
Let's bring on the scales 👍

BrassicaBabe · 24/01/2021 21:59

@venusandmars every day is a school day!Smile

nowlook · 24/01/2021 22:03

@Doilooklikeatourist what a lovely blue sky! I watched our snow from the window while the kids played. That was perfectly adequate for me Wink

(ShagMe’s temporary) Low Carb Lockdown Bootcamp - Jan 21 - Week 1 chat thread PART 2!!!
nowlook · 24/01/2021 22:07

@BrassicaBabe I'm now wholly confused about turnips and swede...but you really should be the authority with that username Grin

nowlook · 24/01/2021 22:13

Supper for me was a really posh loaded burger with lots of green salad. Blue cheese, mushrooms, gherkins. Awesome.

I'd be disheartened by that radish prep to yield ratio @Lyrata. You must have the patience of Job, as my mother would say.

Livelongandprosper · 24/01/2021 22:13

Can someone recommend a decent knife I could buy that will cut up a swede? The bastard is winning, my knife is wedged solidly half way through it

BIWI · 24/01/2021 22:13

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch

Well, I think you're a very good substitute teacher *@ShagMeRiggins* .

I mean, nobody's made you cry yet, have they?

How long have you been running the bootcamp @BIWI? I'm guessing a good while, as it's so well organised.

B: Yog with cream
L: Fried bacon and egg with mixed salad (with various veg)
D: Roast chicken, BC cauli cheese, kale

Lots of water, one coffee with cream & two cups of tea. (I have milk, but just have a tiny, tiny drop).

Since 2012!

I had no idea what I'd unleashed when I started it Grin

Dailyhandtowelwash · 24/01/2021 22:13

DH and I are in a mixed marriage (north and south) and can spend hours arguing about swedes and turnips. He’s wrong, obviously.

BIWI · 24/01/2021 22:14

@Justcallmecaptainobvious

I might do a top up shop at Waitrose tomorrow which I normally avoid because I spend a fortune there, apart from chopped celeriac (obvs) are there any other products anyone would recommend? Maybe a good salad dressing?
The best salad dressing is one you make yourself! Good olive oil, some good wine vinegar, salt and pepper, possibly some Dijon or wholemeal mustard, possibly some finely chopped garlic and/or chopped shallot
Dailyhandtowelwash · 24/01/2021 22:18

Speaking of DH, he (as the main chef) is enthusiastically preparing dinners chock full of butter and cream, because he loves cooking that way. But he isn’t low carbing. I’m rather worried he’s going to expand over the coming weeks. He is already a man capable of putting 50g of butter on a couple of slices of toast, so it’s encouragement he doesn’t need.

Doilooklikeatourist · 24/01/2021 22:37

@Livelongandprosper try a crinkle cut knife ( sounds mad , but it does work )
I had a brilliant one from Amazon , took ages to arrive , turns out it came from Thailand , I love it so much , I crinkle cut everything ,
It's really good at chopping skin off stubborn veg
I think Lakeland does them too

Bestbees · 24/01/2021 22:39

@venusandmars that turnip recipe sounds lovely, will put that on the menu.

@Dailyhandtowelwash good point about those around us. My DH is very slim, so should be fine, but must make a note to keep an eye on how much fat I am pouring into him.

@ChristMyArse I hope you have a good night's sleep.

Food for tomorrow:
B boiled eggs with mayo/butter. Might take these to work and delay until 10 to achieve 16:8. Did this a lot before but haven't on low carb, but feeling more settled into it. I won't do it if I am starving, so have boiled the eggs ready incase.

L tinned salmon mixed with mayo, peppers and celery on a dressed salad- homemade as described by @BIWI, delicious!

D tofu stir fry with lot of veg. Will struggle to get much fat in their so maybe a slice of cheese after, unless anyone has any ideas?

Looking forward to another week of chatting here and will try to keep up Grin

GorgeousGoldies · 24/01/2021 22:43

Got really behind over the weekend, but thank you BIWI for helping me answer the ‘fat’ question.

Livelongandprosper · 24/01/2021 22:45

@Doilooklikeatourist Thank you, I'm no cook and I'm on Amazon right now not knowing where to start - I had no idea there were so many different knives! My son always complains when he comes home that I don't have any decent knives and I finally must concede that he's right. I'll have a look at some crinkle cut ones Smile

flossiegrippiter · 24/01/2021 23:05

@Livelongandprosper can't go wrong with Kuhn Rikon or Victorinox for veg knives if you need those
