A quick tide thread to tide us over because first thread full. @BIWI probably has a life but as soon as she’s able we WILL ALL MIGRATE TO THE NEW, proper thread.

Salut!

@anewdispensation

Enjoying BC so far. was on a zoom call last night and my friends all commented on how lovely my skin was- must be the daily 4 litres of water... I felt sleepy and tired this afternoon though so had some chicken broth to perk me up..

Someone on the other thread mentioned low carb bread- is this allowed? I am avoiding anything processed. Thoughts anyone?

The low carb bread is from this company

It is actually quite processed, but it's the best bread substitute I've ever come across in all the millions of years I've been low carbing. It doesn't seem to impact on weight loss, and it is very low in carbs. However, it's very expensive (and delivery costs are quite high), so that will limit consumption!

BIWI · 23/01/2021 19:24

@nowlook

I think that dough mix might be too carby. Hopefully someone will confirm before you buy it!
Yes I agree - I'm actually not quite sure why they are calling it keto, to be honest:

Key Keto Nutrition:

10 even buns contains 6.9g carbs and 6.7g fibre each
6 large even buns contains 11.5g carbs and 11.2g fibre each
4 large even baguettes contains 17.1g carbs and 16.7g fibre. each
NET CARBS: 1.8g per full pack

... although I'm interested why they talk about the fibre and net carbs? We don't subtract fibre in the UK, and this is a UK-based company, so not quite sure what's going on here.

Personally until you really know what the carb counts are I'd avoid them. Sorry!

Lyrata · 23/01/2021 19:25

@Oneborneverydecade hah! Yes, I have the same fantasy of emerging out of my puffy coats in a tiny crop top.

Well it’s only the one friend I’ve seen (plus her husband who wouldn’t comment) and she has mentioned that I look slim but it’s more ‘looking slim’ rather than ‘wow you’ve lost weight.’ So I’ve been relatively noncommittal. I feel a bit like the girl who cried wolf with LC - I’ve said I’m doing it so many times but every other time I’ve restricted too much and avoided fat and failed. This is the first time I’ve felt like it’s a sustainable, enjoyable - and thanks to you lot, supportive way of eating.

@StuntNun

DH made cavalo nero for dinner and it was yucky - far too garlicky plus acrid from the browned butter. Then while he was faffing with the cavalo nero, the pork belly got overcooked and was dry and chewy. What do you do when the food is so disappointing you wish you hadn't had to eat it? I want a new dinner!
Cream sauce the lot. Creamy mushroom sauce if you have them. Cream covers quite a few acrid mistakes.

I hear you. When everything should be right, but isn’t. Dry pork belly...how does one even manage that, given the fat content? Flowers

Keeping up with these threads is a full time job Grin

How has everyones saturday been?
Been a really good day foodwise today! No snacking at all which is a major win! DH has the weekend off and it usually involves a lot of eating & snacking but I honestly was not hungry between meals.

ShagMeRiggins · 23/01/2021 19:42

The narcissist in me in hoping that I'll go out without my puffa in late Spring and the playground will collectively do a deep intake of breath

Glad to see I’m not the only admitted member with an inner narcissist.

The collective intake of breath will happen, but it will happen quietly.

Which brings me to Lyrata as well.

It can be difficult with significant weight loss. People don’t always know what to say. Commenting “OMG you’ve lost tons!” doesn’t always make is feel good, does it?

Not commenting doesn’t make us feel good either sometimes. Confused

It’s tricky.

Mostly I look at any compliment as a gift so the only appropriate response is a “thank you.” No explaining, no complaining, no questioning.

By the way everyone—I’ve been laughing quite a bit with all the clever shit going on and especially enjoyed the “Miss” and sneaking a fag etc from earlier. This is certainly a lovely lot. Let’s have more, it’s a highlight for me, and I sincerely wish us all the best for this Bootcamp. Mwah!!

@BIWI

The problem is that starter brands seldom manufacture their own products. They want small production runs, so the manufacturing costs are disproportionately high for them. Costs therefore need to be saved. The brand will get a marketing agency to design the packaging and skip legal review- and simply an existing brand's labelling style. Errors abound and thereby compound. Our labelling regs are detailed and complex.

The label mentioned doesn't comply. The issue is that no-one has ownership. The company trusts the agency; the agency just does the artwork; the packaging company just prints the pouch; the pouch is just free- issued to the manufacturer (who had offered an expensive review process which wasn't taken up and as such has insisted on an indemnity).

Eventually, a friendly trading standards officer picks it up and the non-compliant products are taken off sale at crushing cost to the starter brand.

Fred loves a bit of sexy regulatory talk...

ShagMeRiggins · 23/01/2021 19:49

ListenLinda my Saturday’s been fab, actually!

And I’ve been meaning to say my Friday night wasn’t all that bad either. The husband surprised me with this (photos attached) and it was fucking amazing.

We’ve had our ups and downs over the past few years—even separated/didn’t actually separate Hmm circa 2018/2019–but saw it through and are stronger and happier now.

Which is why I feel completely happy being queened with this meal.

Anyway, I have many recommendations for At Home restaurant meals if anyone’s interested in splurging. Easy to swerve the carb stuff, by the way!

Oh, how lovely! Send us a link!

ZiggZagg · 23/01/2021 20:12

Looks delicious but sounds far too posh for me shagWink

Lyrata · 23/01/2021 20:15

Oh, that’s so lovely @ShagMeRiggins - congratulations on building such a wonderful marriage.

And yes, a compliment is a compliment!

ListenLinda · 23/01/2021 20:25

@ShagMeRiggins that’s lovely!

Dailyhandtowelwash · 23/01/2021 20:31

That looks gorgeous. I am deeply envious of all the amazing Dine at Home offerings right now as I’m not in the UK so can’t get any of them.

I do have three Waitroses within ten miles of my house but DH would take the purchase of pre-chopped celeriac as an attack on his masculinity.

Are we allowed black pudding? Or is it a (delicious-sounding) Burns’ Night great? It’s quite full of breadcrumbs isn’t it? Is morcilla any better?

prettybird · 23/01/2021 20:39

Not really allowed on Boot Camp Blush

....that's why I started a week early and factor it in to my "Boot Camp Light" relaxation.

Ingredients for Stornaway Black Pudding are Beef Suet, Vegetable Fat, Oatmeal, Pork Blood, Onions, Salt, Spices - so mostly fat Grin The carb count us really low - as far as I can make out, less than 1g per slice (and I only have one slice).

prettybird · 23/01/2021 20:39

No breadcrumbs Grin

Dailyhandtowelwash · 23/01/2021 20:42

You bring me amazing news! I watched DH eating it at lunchtime in huge envy.

Motivateinmotion · 23/01/2021 20:42

Just caught up on the last 3 pages of thread 1 thinking I’d made it then realised it was only at 2:30pm so knew there would have to be another thread going. Going to read back now.

Today-
B- egg Mayo, homemade guacamole and lettuce
L- pork scratching
D- butterfly chicken, Brussels, spring greens and topped with creamy mushrooms

Spent ages this morning de-shelling eggs for the egg Mayo. Anyone have a trick up their sleeve to make this quicker/easier? I never really ate eggs hard boiled before

nowlook · 23/01/2021 20:48

Touch of vinegar in the water;
Running under cold tap for ages;
Gently crush in kitchen roll;
Remove shell!

Older eggs are MUCH easier. I would only mass egg process in their last week.
Bestbees · 23/01/2021 20:51

@ShagMeRiggins that looks epic!

@Motivateinmotion I smoosh the egg on a board and then roll them around and then it comes off pretty easy. Are you not hungry just eating pork scratchings for lunch?

My lamb cutlets with herb butter on brocoli puree was delicious though I think I over did the butter as feeling a touch sick! I am suspecting I won't have lost this week, but feeling settled into the eating mostly and enjoying it so hoping to slowly tweak as we go forwards. Just to confirm can we eat veg that is orange on the list, but just to watch amounts? Have a few tomatoes in the fridge on their way out so was thinking of delias courgette and tomato gratin boosted with mozerella.

Those discussing cravings I honestly didn't mind my husband munching the celebrations on the sofa last night, and my desire for wine has definitely decreased (dry Jan). I am considering totally dry lock down, but we shall see!

nowlook · 23/01/2021 20:53

Oh god, stop me from making this doom purchase:

Just something else to wash up, @nowlook. I see that, and I see CHORE.

Eggshells you just chuck. Or keep for plant pots. Depending.

That's a bit worrying though, isn't it?

Having worked in advertising/marketing/new product development/pack design research all my professional life, I'd be very worried about trading standards.

But also - think what it means for the poor consumer!

nowlook · 23/01/2021 21:08

Exactly! Everyone suffers when there isn't a level playing field (I.e a starter brand says "baking powder"; a corporate giant lists the components: consumer thinks the starter product is more natural). And then there's the issue of allergens. Unfortunately, trading standards are spread thinly these days- it typically takes a consumer/competitor complaint.

Do you miss it?
