Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - the lucky 7

BIWI · 23/11/2020 08:58

... no idea why 7 is supposed to be lucky, but let's hope it is for us!

Here's the Spreadsheet

If you haven't visited the spreadsheet for a while, or really had a good look at it, can I suggest that you have a good browse of it now? There's lots of really useful information there.

Why do I suggest that? Because it's easy to get complacent or to lose enthusiasm this far into Bootcamp - but yet we still have 4 weeks to go, so it's important to hold your resolve.

Hopefully the scales (or your tape measure/favourite item of clothing) have been kind to you this week - but if not, have a think about why. Have you allowed carb creep? Have you been cheating? Have you slipped on the fat/water front?

Anyway, hopefully all is good, and here's to another positive week

@Jdhshekr We have the Tesco Finest sausages, and they are 1.5g carbs for two. I buy the big packs (10) and keep leftover cooked sausages in the fridge for lunches.

BIWI · 29/11/2020 10:52

@Jdhshekr. Waitrose premium sausages are 1.1g carbs per 200g

This "gin" looks interesting - launched by a friend of a friend.

I can't see a carb count but as well as being low(er) in alcohol, it's low in calories and has no added sugar.

@Totalshambles

lyrata fab re the nespresso, you will really enjoy that!

jdhshekr Re periods, I have found that LCHF has made a huge difference. So much so that I completely forget it is due until I look in my calendar- which is a huge change because before I had very painful breasts for at least a week before. Now nothing. It’s pretty incredible. However I do know from having done this before that if you do go on and off the LC wagon then that can seriously mess it all up. I think it sends the hormones crazy and they don’t know how to regulate or anticipate what’s coming next (although clearly, I am no medic..). Could it be that?

I’ve been really good at sticking to LCHF for the entire 4 months I’ve done it. I don’t have cheat days and the couple of times I accidentally went over my carbs were very near the beginning. I soon knocked that on the head because I get massive amounts of diarrhoea if I do that. So no coming in and out of it since two accidental occasions in August.

I went with these ones! I hope they’re nice. Going to have them tonight.

When the weather is grey and misty, what better way to spend the afternoon than in the kitchen? There's the creamiest, buttery chicken soup (much of it in small portions so I can have it for lunch and none gets wasted on dh), and lots of regular stock ready for the next glut of vegetables, there's chilli con carne, sans beans, and chicken, green pepper and chorizo fajitas (without fajitas, but with a delicious cheese sauce).

Breakfast courtesy of hotel was sausage, bacon, eggs, mushroom, tomato
L - chef's salad (chopped chicken, mushroom, buffalo mozzarella in mayonnaise) plus lots of green stuff
D - smoked salmon and scrambled egg

Hmm, reading back that looks like a lot of protein and not much veg... Ah well it's only one day and I think I do very well on veg generally. Drinking all the water.

Can anyone give me some quick advice for my friend who has started Bootcamp but isn't on MN?
She seems to be on day two of the most extreme case of carb flu I have heard of - she is feeling so rough at the moment she can't go out to get any extra supplies !
She has had whole body aches , she said even her teeth hurt - and some palpitations.
Today she has had salt in water , magnesium supplement , drink water galore and eaten salmon and yoghurt based on the advice on the FAQs.
She has ordered electrolyte supplements online.

Can anyone offer anymore suggestions or even an idea how long it might last ?
I feel a bit awful as it's me who has 'inspired' her to give it a go !

Thanks

hey lovlies I'm still here watching and reading but my week has gone to pot..I'm fully expecting a gain tomorrow as I've been absoluely rubbish this week in line with my mood. No excuses but feeling the effects of eating a few carbs... I've been an idiot... lets hope the damage isn't too bad in the morning. All the best to those also struggling a bit with life x

That sounds pretty extreme, especially for day 2. Did she have a horrendously high carb way of eating before? Is she being a bit over strict re carbs?

I'd advise her to have a slice of wholemeal toast, and see if that makes things any better.

But the thing that worries me is you talking about whole body aches. That isn't something we'd expect to see on a low carb diet, and is more associated with flu (or, dare I say it, Covid?)

If it is carb flu, then tell her to ease up and increase the amount of carbs - make she sure isn't thinking this is a zero carb WOE. But I'd also advise talking to her GP or the NHS service to rule out Covid.

@BIWI thanks so much for the reply I really appreciate it especially as she isn’t on here.

Forgive me for being unclear but she started low carb on Monday and today was day two of the flu feelings . It’s difficult to know exactly what she has been eating - her diet was pretty ‘healthy ‘ lots of veg and her carbs were more likely to be pulses than bread. She said she tried low carb once before and stopped as she felt ill.

I have passed on your advice .
Hope it’s not COVID and she doesn’t really go anywhere much to catch it but the thought did cross my mind as it seems so extreme !

BIWI · 29/11/2020 20:53

If it is just carb flu, then you need to give her the standard advice about electrolytes, i.e. getting plenty of sodium (so lots of salt) as well as magnesium and potassium.

Get her to join us! That's the best way we can help her

Thanks I will remind her - she was reading the diet doctor advice shared on here so had done that I think and she has also ordered the Zero tablets you recommended to me at that start !
I will suggest she joins but it would surprise me - I don’t think she understands my long standing MN addiction .
Thanks again BIWI

Bit late now I know but when I went to a McDonalds I had a double cheeseburger and just didn't eat the bun. It was lovely and I don't think it did me any harm.
