2020 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp. The first week!

Welcome all.

Well what a strange year this has been! If you're anything like me, food, meals and eating have been all over the place. And that's before we think about the booze.

I found lockdown an odd mix of feeling like I was on holiday but it was also the end of the world. So what was the point of worrying about my diet?

I am lucky, relatively, in that we don't have small children to worry about educating. We also have a nice house and garden, and as me and DH have recently retired, don't have to worry about work. So we were very much advantaged over many people.

But still, the diet/drinking was all to pot. And with the inevitable result.

So we're now in the run up to Christmas - traditionally a time when diets go out of the window, and we start to indulge ourselves. Who knows what's going to happen this year though?!

So with that in mind, it's a good time to try and be focused and aim to have a bit of discipline! This Bootcamp, as with most others, will last for 10 weeks, which will take us right up to Christmas week.

(I truly hope that we'll all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones, but who knows?)

With grateful thanks to @AthelstaneTheUnready, here is the Spreadsheet of Exceptional Fabulousness .

You should find that you're on the spreadsheet. A couple of things:

  • if you don't want to record your weight every week, that's absolutely fine. Just don't do it!
  • if you're not on it, just add your name to the bottom - don't try and re-alphabatize it - we'll sort it out later

The spreadsheet isn't just a place to record your weight though - have a good look at it, and the tabs - there's loads of information on there, including a veg carb counter and lots of stuff about low carbing in general. You'll also find Bootcamp rules there.

@incurablyCurious I'm glad you had a good day with your mum i would have eaten the buns too. I agree that it's likely to be covid onions that got you. Flowers

My tummy troubles cleared up by themselves by lunchtime, thank goodness!! So I didn't have to rush out and buy immodium in my lunch break, and I didn't have to dash out and leave my year 10 classes this afternoon (they would not have continued working if I had, I would have come back to chaos).

PastramiNoRye · 14/10/2020 16:05

I'm feeling a bit covid oniony today too. I keep trying to get hold of a grip but I'm fed up (just like everyone else).

Hoping boot camp is going to be the thing to concentrate on!

Decent day food wise:

B: eggs in butter, creamy coffee
L: cabbage and leek soup with parmesan grated on top, salami
D: lamb curry with cauliflower rice

Got a fair bit more water to drink...only on about 1.5l so far!

Rshard · 14/10/2020 16:18

Sorry to read that some folk are fed up Flowers. As pp have said these are the strangest of times we’re living in and it’s affecting us all. A colleague today reminded me to be kind to myself (am in a new role and obsessing that I don’t know 100% yet), so I’m passing her very wise advice on you you lot

NigellaAwesome · 14/10/2020 17:00

@IncurablyCurious Flowers - Bless. That is so kind and thoughtful of your Mum.

On the milk substitute conversation, I have coffee with a blend of unsweetened almond milk and a dash of double cream - known as AM&C.

I have had a reasonable day - the scales are already moving, I'm in ketosis, and I made coleslaw with homemade mayo, vats of chicken stock, a roast beef joint for slicing and eating cold, and an enormous chicken curry for tonight with halved eggs in it.

I have other stuff I should be concentrating on, but I decided to deliberately take a day off from thinking about it. Back to the grindstone tomorrow.

Margaritawithlime · 14/10/2020 17:09

Hello hello. Just catching up. Hope everyone is ok today and drinking their water!!

Just had a stir fry with the cauli rice to close the kitchen for the day and it was really good done by food processor! I’d still rather buy the microwave stuff for sheer blinking faff reasons but it tasted great. I did chicken and bean sprouts with some ginger and garlic, onion powder and a dash of soy sauce. Hoping the carb content of that is ok.
The rest of the family had the same with added peas carrots and noodles. It was fine cooking the initial bit all together and then sort of separating a section off for myself so that’s good as sometimes cooking for everyone can be annoying. It’s defo one to put on the list.

ZiggZagg · 14/10/2020 17:11

Well my celeriac dauphinois has not gone to plan! It's looking very runny and I'm not sure what's gone wrong Blush

Looks like lamb chops with veg for tea!

Hope everyone is feeling ok, it's a strange time for everyone.

Whogivesatossedpancake · 14/10/2020 17:13

I bought some keto sticks and im officially in Ketosis yay.

I've had a lot of difficulty drinking water today because of back to back meetings at work and trying to fit in water and toilet breaks! I'll be back on the water wagon tomorrow Smile

Sunseed · 14/10/2020 17:24

Another fed-up soul over here. Negative feedback on a report I'd put heart and soul into. But, on the plus side I am not going to drown my sorrows in a bottle of wine tonight. I can focus on the immediate things that I can control, i.e. food and water.

Sausages and creamy cabbage I think tonight.

Whogivesatossedpancake · 14/10/2020 17:26

@Sunseed good for you ! It would be so easy to crack the wine open especially on hump day as well (its raining here, so shit weather as well).

KOKO

Sunseed · 14/10/2020 17:32

Thanks @Whogivesatossedpancake

@ZiggZagg I wonder if the celeriac dauphinois needs to cook for longer, so the juices released by the veg can evaporate off and then sauce should be thicker?

Titsywoo · 14/10/2020 17:40

Went off track today :( Went to see a friend and she had made quiche and salad for lunch. Haven't told anyone I'm dieting and didn't want to make a fuss but it was a small amount of pastry so although not ideal i won't beat myself up for too long! Currently cooking a MASSIVE turkey leg I found in Morrisons (not planning to eat it all in one sitting - it weighs 1.7kg!) but will have a bit with some leftover cauli mash and lots of spinach.

Had a headache from when I woke up until about 4pm but feeling better now. Hopefully the pastry hasn't knocked me back as I felt quite crap this morning and would like to push through that asap.

Also having issues with bowels but that happens everytime I start a new way of eating - clearly I'm a bit sensitive!

ZiggZagg · 14/10/2020 17:42

Thank you@Sunseed I will try cooking it longer.

Don't get too downhearted, work is work and I find that no matter what you do some people will never be happyThanks enjoy your food and be proud that you haven't reached for the wine Halo

Titsywoo · 14/10/2020 17:53

I LOVE that cheeseburger pie BIWI! I've done low carb before and had that for lunch with broccolli or asparagus many times. In fact I'm going to make one tomorrow now I think :)

DiscontentedWoman · 14/10/2020 17:58

I find a dauph always takes a bazillion years to cook. It is nice with some peppered mackerel fillets flaked in amongst the layers.

itsmeagainagain · 14/10/2020 18:13

wow this moves fast! I'm caught up! Loving all the celeriac love its one of my faves and I'm growing some at the moment too although its looking pretty puny.. love the cheeseburger pie recipe will try that one out. I was out and about yesterday unexpectedly and discovered a pretty decent meal deal at Tesco.. Egg and ham salad with colslaw, didnt realise it had new potatoes in til I opened it so I just left them but my goodness that took some willpower! Bottle of fizzy water with it and one of the sides was mini chicken skewer things ( I know processed so not ideal..) Then and I cant believe I did this and am admitting to it.... No cant tell you .....ok I'll tell you. Family had fish and chips from the chip shop chosen by the kids as a treat for getting an award. I ordered cod and I stripped all the batter off it and had lashings of mayo. It was awesome but not a green veg in sight... So it was pretty unplanned yesterday but I feel fairly happy with my choices. Today we're meant to be having chill prawn linguine so I'm planning on having the chill prawns with avocado a bit like a pimped 70's prawn cocktail. Fancy! I know I'm drinking too much tea still though. About 8 cups per day (am expecting the big stick for this_ but am limiting the milk to a splash and hoping to cut it out all together. Well done everyone love reading all your meals. Lolling at the DH who didnt think spaghetti was pasta Grin

itsmeagainagain · 14/10/2020 18:14

chilli prawns that should say.....

FizzyPink · 14/10/2020 18:24

@itsmeagainagain you can usually ask the fish shop to steam you a piece of cod so there’s no tempting batter on it. Not the most inviting meal ever but it’s done the job for me before when colleagues have insisted on a fish and chip lunch

I’m very pleased this evening, I thought my water bottle held 400ml but it’s actually 900ml so I’m drinking much more than I thought and actually way over target Grin also noticed on my smart scales this morning that my body water has increased slightly which I’m not sure is related to drinking more or not

Dinner tonight was supposed so be chicken stir fry but after having chicken salads for lunch the last few days I’m not sure I can face anymore chicken so might go with something else

itsmeagainagain · 14/10/2020 18:35

@Turnedouttoes oh will try that next time 👍

MsAwesomeDragon · 14/10/2020 18:48

My meals today have been pretty good.
B: yogurt
L: skipped it because of bowel issues and not wanting to risk it
Snack (at about 4, after school): cucumber sticks and corned beef
D: roasted veg with chicken and halloumi.

And I've drunk all my water today, but will probably still have more over the course of the evening.

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 14/10/2020 18:57

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayer why does your DP hate fat?

He just doesnt like fat. At all. Hates the way it tastes and feels in his mouth. He particularly hates the smell of it cooking - frying anything, or grilling sausages for example and says it makes him feel sick. He is the type to cut the fat off his bacon Shock

But he does really want to lose weight so I'm going to have to make meals where I can hide the fat in sauces.

He also hates seafood and doesnt like to eat alot of meat. He's going to ruin this WOE for me 😂

EastofEdna · 14/10/2020 19:04

Day 3 done.
Bf: cheese + onion omelette
Lunch: cauliflower + cheese soup
Tea: chicken + veg stir fry,
Snack: olives.
Water: 2l

52andblue · 14/10/2020 19:13

2 eggs fried in butter and broccoli for breakfast.
Some corned beef and cucumber for lunch.
A piece of cheddar for a snack.
Just had some chicken and veg soup with extra broccoli, green beans and leeks for dinner.
Plus a couple of coffees and a couple of cups of tea with small splashes of half fat milk. Not perfect, but better than yesterday so far.
Been a stressful day so pretty pleased with that.

BIWI · 14/10/2020 19:14

To be honest, they're not really worth wasting your money on!

If you're drinking all the water that you should be and I can see that you're not quite there yet then it will wash the ketones away, so they won't really register.

Why wait till tomorrow for the water though?! It's only just after 7pm!

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayer unfortunately he's really going to have to work on that!

What about cheese? Or olive oil-based dressings on salads?
