2020 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp. The first week!

Welcome all.

Well what a strange year this has been! If you're anything like me, food, meals and eating have been all over the place. And that's before we think about the booze.

I found lockdown an odd mix of feeling like I was on holiday but it was also the end of the world. So what was the point of worrying about my diet?

I am lucky, relatively, in that we don't have small children to worry about educating. We also have a nice house and garden, and as me and DH have recently retired, don't have to worry about work. So we were very much advantaged over many people.

But still, the diet/drinking was all to pot. And with the inevitable result.

So we're now in the run up to Christmas - traditionally a time when diets go out of the window, and we start to indulge ourselves. Who knows what's going to happen this year though?!

So with that in mind, it's a good time to try and be focused and aim to have a bit of discipline! This Bootcamp, as with most others, will last for 10 weeks, which will take us right up to Christmas week.

(I truly hope that we'll all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones, but who knows?)

With grateful thanks to @AthelstaneTheUnready, here is the Spreadsheet of Exceptional Fabulousness .

You should find that you're on the spreadsheet. A couple of things:

  • if you don't want to record your weight every week, that's absolutely fine. Just don't do it!
  • if you're not on it, just add your name to the bottom - don't try and re-alphabatize it - we'll sort it out later

The spreadsheet isn't just a place to record your weight though - have a good look at it, and the tabs - there's loads of information on there, including a veg carb counter and lots of stuff about low carbing in general. You'll also find Bootcamp rules there.

You're on, @Anotherducker!

Anotherducker · 14/10/2020 12:09

@AthelstaneTheUnready many thanks.

I've just made myself a coffee with almond milk and I'm not a fan! I've read somewhere about diluting cream and using that in place of milk. Does anyone do that here?

Doilooklikeatourist · 14/10/2020 13:13

@Searchesforhipbones, we're stressfully selling as well, it's a nightmare and has caused a lot of oh shit, I need a glass of wine moments
What I have to remember is I don't need a glass of wine , I just want one
anyone want to buy a business in Wales ?

Takethewinefromtheswine · 14/10/2020 13:24

Half way through day 3 and, as many have said, fewer carbs seems to be really suiting my IBS. I'm normally a lazy eater, so my previous diet which consisted largely of wine/piece of toast/crisps and no actual meals really didnt suit my innards. Although I appear to have the opposite problem to some and my usual bathroom habits have gone too far the other way...hopefully the increased water, greenery and fat will do its job soon!
Loving the motivational pics, thank you for those.

I'm not sure - I think people just use cream 'neat'. But why not try it both ways and see which you prefer? You could also give black coffee a go too - it wasn't as bad as I was fearing!

Why use diluting (is that the same as "single" cream?) when you can enjoy double cream in your coffee? Confused

poorbuthappy · 14/10/2020 13:36

I gave up milk and sugar in my tea and coffee about 4 years ago and it did take me about 18 months to get used to it!

poorbuthappy · 14/10/2020 13:37

Sorry that's not helpful is it!

Stegasaurusmum · 14/10/2020 13:37

Oh bugger to the oat milk.. 😬 I know soya is better... But it tastes rank. Oddly I can have cream in coffee, usually do first thing, to keep me going for the couple of hours till at my desk and eating breakfast... But milk just messes me up...
Maybe I'll try to stick to herbal teas apart from that first coffee then 😕

RitaEllen · 14/10/2020 13:44

Really craving sugar today! And my head is pounding. I’m doing better with the water.

Rayna37 · 14/10/2020 13:45

Early swim then breakfast of two hardboiled eggs with salt at my desk at 10:30 (16hr fast)

Lunch of the usual salad (spinach, tomato, cucumber with olive oil) today with a tin mackerel in olive oil with a sauce made from of a spoon of creme fraiche and wholegrain mustard. Greek yogurt afterwards with a spoon of thick double cream that needed using up, because I can't put it on strawberries or apple crumble now.

Dinner is planned to be sea bass pan fried with steamed leeks and broccoli with butter.

Doing well with the water.

BalloonSlayer · 14/10/2020 13:55

@takingontheworld I did a double take reading that you'd had a "huge owl."

I thought by gum she's taking her low carb seriously! Grin

1stMrsF · 14/10/2020 13:55

Also finding this thread a welcome distraction from work...
(lashings of double) cream in coffee is the best habit I've picked up from BC. I used to drink huge lattes and now I don't even like milk in coffee anymore!
Lunch today was roast pork with carrots and peas - again the only vegetables in the canteen. Pre-covid there was a salad bar so I could top up with low carb veg, now there are only pre-prepared salad boxes that include couscous or rice or somesuch Hmm
I like the idea of the microwaved sprouts and other green veg though so I'll aim to do that after half term. Just topping up my Ocado shop with some yummy things. We should be in France next week Sad so I'm planning food that we would usually eat there - boeuf bourgingnon, pork steaks in creamy sauce (recipe is on the threads), celeriac dauphinoise...

IncurablyCurious · 14/10/2020 13:56

I've had a little fail this morning Blush Though it wasn't to do with willpower, but because I finally saw my lovely mum for the first time since March (both shielding), and it was very tearful, and she'd bought surprise homemade cinnamon buns like she used to make when I was a kid. So I had a (Tiny! Guilty!) nibble with my coffee, and have put the remainder in the freezer to get them out of the way until post-bootcamp times.

Does being low carb make you more tearful in the first few days? I definitely feel like there's onions in the air today.

Anyway:
B: Coffee, cream, tiny nibble of illicit bun.
L: Chicken salad
D: Salmon with asparagus and spinach
Water: Like, all of it. I've never drunk this much water in my life.

ShagMeRiggins · 14/10/2020 13:57

Stegasaurus and Hopeislost I’m a fan of full fat cream in coffee. You’ll often seen it written here as Creamy coffee.

I also like almond milk or sometimes soya milk, but only in tea.

Then again, I drink a maximum of two teas or coffees a day, usually just the one tea in the morning. From then my beverages tend to be water or hot beverages tend to be bouillon using a Knorr Rich beef cube.

ShagMeRiggins · 14/10/2020 14:22

gawd, I do go on, sorry!

Nah, you really don’t, 52andblue. You haven’t seen me in full flow yet. We’re talking dissertation territory. Keeping writing whatever you want to write.

Sorry that's not helpful is it!

No, it wasn’t, poorbuthappy, but it was damn funny. Certainly pay didn’t expect the punchline to be “only 18 months to get used to it.”

I’m now eating first food of the day, which wasn’t quite planned, but it’s leftover Cincinnati chilli cheese dogs (sans buns) which was meant to be last night’s dinner but teenagers happened.

The Hormoaners are in full hormonal glory, oh yes they are, and the fug of testosterone and Lynx is thick.

Perfect time for mummy to give up alcohol, focus on weight loss, eating, and (eventually) quitting smoking. Little carb-snarfing bastards... Hmm

Totalshambles · 14/10/2020 14:24

Feeling so much better today than yesterday. No headache and just all round more human.
B- Fasting
L- couple of cheese crackers, a babybel, half packet of M&S prosciutto and cheese rollicks (so good) and a few olives.
D- planning to have something eggy maybe asparagus frittata or some other sort of omelettey thing and salad.

Totalshambles · 14/10/2020 14:25

sorry rollitos not rollicks. Rollicks sounds like something very different...!

ShagMeRiggins · 14/10/2020 14:29

Awww, bless you IncurablyCurious. I can’t imagine the Big Stick coming out for that one—done, acknowledged, moving on—but I think those are COVID onions, not LCHF onions. Flowers

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 14/10/2020 14:34

After my poor meal attempts for day 2 I'm back on track. Unfortunately DP still wants to do low carb with me 😭 He hates fat, grease etc so I'm going to have to meticulously meal plan to accommodate.

B. Fatty latte
L. Just have to grab a quick tin of mackerel in oil with a mouthful of spinach as I run out the door (taking my little devils cherubs to butterfly world and I'm dreading how many poor little butterflies will have PTSD by the end of our visit
D. Steak, probably with cauliflower mash, mushrooms and pepper sauce (DP can handle this)

I discovered tins of tuna infused with soya and ginger, 3.2 carbs in 100g in aldi so picked a couple tons up. There was another infused with jalepenos where the carb count was under 1g (I think) per 100g.

To the person who recommended making cauliflower rice in the food processor thanks!! I'm going to buy one today.

VeryLittleOwl · 14/10/2020 15:41

Well, Junior Dog has been pronounced a fit and healthy weight by the vet at his annual MOT and boosters, so now I just have to copy him. He definitely has the low carb diet down pat, not sure about his fitness regime of running in circles around sheep though.

There was less sausage casserole left than I thought, so I had that for lunch, and DH is working in town today so is determined to bring home a curry for supper. I've gone for a chicken tikka green herb one and will make myself some veggies to go with it rather than rice/naan etc.

Fourth pint of the day sunk.

takingontheworld Stop molesting my feathered relatives! Wink

BIWI · 14/10/2020 15:43

@BuffyTheBuffetSlayer why does your DP hate fat? Is it because of what he thinks he knows about it or what he's been told about it, or is it a genuine dislike?

If it's the former, then getting him to read up on some of the resources about fat and why it's not a dangerous thing to eat might help him.

If the latter, then surely he can't dislike all fat?!

🤣🤣🤣

As someone who gave up vegetarianism for this WOE an owl would most definitely be a step too far for me to cope with !

I'm really trying to focus on my water as I've been a bit slack. I just wish my bladder could cope!!

Notwatchingtvtoday · 14/10/2020 15:48

Agh, have just been out for lunch, had a small Chicken salad, thought I was doing well, then it came generously drizzled in a sweet salad dressing, I always ask for dressing on the side, but was so pleased to actually be out (we were outside) but busy doing jacket up, mask, woolly hat etc I totally forgot. In grand scheme I know it’s not too bad, but am very cross at myself for my poor choice. I will know better for next time.
