I thought it would be helpful to have a thread showing other low carbers/Bootcampers some low carb products that you've found. Photos, so we can spot them when we go shopping - but also photos of the nutritional data so we know how many carbs per serving they contain.

I've got two that I'm going to start the thread with, firstly Bare Naked noodles. These are made from konjac flour, and have been part of Japanese cuisine for many years. They're a brilliant replacement for noodles in stir fries or soups - and can be used instead of spaghetti (although not quite as successfully!). But they are very, very low in carbs (and calories) so can be a really useful thing to have in your cupboard. They aren't cheap though, at around £2 a pack (which will serve 2), so probably best if you're using them to make everyone else who's eating ordinary noodles/pasta!

The other thing to beware of is that when you open the packet (they're in water) they smell fishy. Rinse them well in fresh water, and that will deal with that - they really don't taste fishy.

This sauce is good to have in the cupboard to use with meatballs if you want to throw a quick and easy meal together. I have it topped with cheese and guacamole.

One pack is enough for 2 people

Hi, very new to low carbing, and wondering if I've made a rookie mistake. Are quorn products OK to have please?

WatcherOfTheNight · 04/06/2019 20:43

@LoudestRoar - it really depends on the specific product, as the carb counts vary a lot. What did you buy?

OP posts:
LoudestRoar · 04/06/2019 21:03

I've nought the crispy nuggets and the Swedish meatballs.

BIWI · 04/06/2019 22:10

They're not really great - the nuggets are 15.8g of carbs per 100g, and meatballs are 7.4, so that's a bit high.

Are you a vegetarian? Do you have to have Quorn?

OP posts:
LoudestRoar · 05/06/2019 09:59

No, I just thought it would be more healthy! I'm going to read through all these threads for more info.

BIWI · 05/06/2019 10:16

I doubt very much that Quorn is a healthier option, despite what its manufacturers would tell us! It's also really not in the Bootcamp spirit because it's so heavily processed, so if you're not a vegetarian, fresh meat is a lot better for you! Have a good read of the Bootcamp rules - and have a read of the resources on the spreadsheet (linked to in the first chat thread of every Bootcamp) to find out more about low carbing.

This is how Quorn is made: (from Wikipaedia)

Quorn is made from the soil mould Fusarium venenatum strain PTA-2684 (previously misidentified as the parasitic mould Fusarium graminearum[33]). The fungus is grown in continually oxygenated water in large, otherwise sterile fermentation tanks. Glucose and fixed nitrogen are added as a food for the fungus, as are vitamins and minerals to improve the food value of the product. The resulting mycoprotein is then extracted and heat-treated to remove excess levels of RNA.

Sounds delicious, doesn't it?! Wink

DozeyTwonk · 08/06/2019 23:19

@Rayna37 thanks for that. Do you cook it as normal? I usually microwave porridge...

Rayna37 · 09/06/2019 08:38

Dozey yes. I use a pan mostly but microwave fine, just stop and stir regularly until you get the quantities and consistency right for you.

Grimbles · 11/06/2019 12:47

Saw these in my local CoOp today -scrambled eggs in a pot you can warm up in a microwave. Comes in 3 varieties - plain egg, bacon and cheese.

My co OP has a microwave for warming up pastries, etc. So these are handy to grab and go for breakfast or lunch

MrsHerculePoirot · 13/06/2019 09:39

Lo dough. revolutionising my eating at the mo. I don’t actually eat it that often but knowing I can make a pizza or cheese toastie is enough to stop me obsessing about eating things.

Great thread! My Aldi have stopped selling the frozen cauliflower rice 😫 The fresh is more expensive and stinks out the fridge.

bananamonkey · 13/06/2019 10:02

Not a regular thing but of you count net carbs these are great as a quick breakfast or convenience food

BIWI · 13/06/2019 11:05

@bananamonkey - we don't use net carbs in the UK. It's only American foods that deduct fibre from the carb count. Which means that's still pretty carby I'm afraid.
