Week 2 - May '18 Low Carb Bootcamp - my favourite week!

BIWI · 21/05/2018 07:20

Morning all

Here's the Spreadsheet

I love this week, seeing how much weight people lose, and especially as it's always such a surprise for newbies and those who feared that this WOE wouldn't work!

I hope you've all seen good results.

If you haven't - don't despair, but have a think about the week just gone. Look at what you were eating/drinking and consider how well you followed Bootcamp rules.

Any problems, as ever, post them on the thread.

I shall try this boiled egg and butter thing now.

Seafour · 27/05/2018 11:31

WTF weighed myself when I got up and I'm +4lbs overnight. Grrrr could it be from eating dinner at 10:00pm last night? I know I haven't had enough water the last two days because I've spent most of it attached to a ventilator. This is so frustrating I could cry.

Plan for today

B creamy coffee
L avocado & egg with mayo
D BBQ lamb skewers with celeriac remoulade & green salad.

Lonesurvivor · 27/05/2018 11:35

seafour sorry to hear you're still poorly.
It could be the low water or your bodies way of holding onto fluid while it's ill, or even a combination of both.
It's not real though, it's just a fluctuation.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/05/2018 11:43

24 hours fasts just worked for me. i found as soon as i ate something i became hungry so fasting was just a way of avoiding that and avoiding food for longer. i was pretty desperate to lose the weight quickly (wedding) though so was doing 2/3 40 hours fasts a week (so no eating between two sleeps) it was pretty extreme.

I would recommend however doing it at least once just so you can feel what real hunger is and realise that you wont die from it!!

toomuchicecream · 27/05/2018 11:55

For everyone who's disappointed with the losses they've seen so far - hang on in there! In the first 10 days of this Bootcamp I lost 1 pound, maybe 2 depending on direction of wind Then yesterday I was down 2 and today another 1.5, bringing me suddenly to a 5 pound loss. What's all that about? I've done nothing differently!!

What's kept me going when I don't feel like it (eg everyone else has a delicious dessert in restaurant, I have another pint of tap) is the discovery that eating LCHF makes a significant, significant difference to a neurological condition I seem to have picked up. When the choice is eat yummy pudding now and just delay losing weight by a couple of days vs feeling virtuous, pudding wins almost every time. But now I've realised the choice is eat yummy pudding but be in extreme pain and struggling to walk even short distances for the next three days, somehow pudding isn't so attractive. Which is the sole reason I'm the lowest weight I've been in nearly 10 years, and have been for 2 or 3 weeks now. Losing weight is now a bonus effect of keeping mobile rather than the end goal, which is a very different way of thinking.

The way I see it, every week where I don't lose is also a week where I haven't put on. And eventually the efforts will pay off. So keep on keeping on everyone - one meal at a time, one day at a time.

BlackMozart · 27/05/2018 12:18

toomuchicecream that is very helpful.
seafour sorry to hear that but as lonesurvivor says it is probably just a fluctuation. Koko.

maxthemartian · 27/05/2018 12:37

toomuchicecream I'm also doing this primarily to help with my health conditions. I don't want to jinx anything by saying too much yet as the nature of my condition means that my symptoms do tend to cycle but so far I've seen a couple of very important improvements. I want to give it a while longer before saying anything for sure though as I'm so scared of being disappointed down the line.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 27/05/2018 12:53

I like that, toomuch!

I find eating this way genuinely converts my mind from wanting gum-shrinkingly sweet stuff, to wanting something nutritious. To the point I get the same psychological reward from feeling relaxed, clean*, and healthy, as I used to get from jamming crap down my throat.

My vices in recent years have been crisps and wine, but before I tried this WOE the first time (quite some years ago now), I did have more of a sweet tooth. Whatever has slipped since then, that re-learning has not left me - I am genuinely not interested in puddings, afternoon cakes, erm, whatever the other stuff is. So I'm still grateful that's not a willpower battle I have to go through.

  • not to be confused with all the media scoffing about clean-eating orthorexics, just the happy, clean, nice feeling you get when your body is bustling about utilising all the good stuff you've just eaten, rather than swelling up with inflammation, increased BP, etc from unhelpful food.
antimatter · 27/05/2018 13:24

@poster Lonesurvivor for some people they get into ketosis doing 16:8, for others the gap between meals has to be greater and that's why it will be beneficial to increase that gap.

I've done 4 day water fast in the past and can say that how I feel was different from others. I found days 1-3 easy, but during the 4-th one I felt quite unwell by the evening. I was also exercising during those days and felt just in 2-nd day weaker but not in the 4-th (weights).
I fount it easier to get into perhaps because I was LC-ing already and was eating lots of greens in a few days prior.
Keeping on top of electrolytes is most important part to avoid headache, same as at the beginning of LC woe.
I will do it again at some point this year.

MumOfAPickle · 27/05/2018 13:46

Afternoon, having a very good weekend here. Managing no alcohol despite sunshine and bank holiday vibes.
Yesterday:
B: none
L: burger with cheese and salad
D: went out to Bella Italia after the cinema. Had the mozzarella and tomato salad to start and then the sharing platter from the starter menu for my main. It had baked mushrooms, meatballs, chicken wings and dough bites which my DH helpfully polished off!
S: pork scratchings and yogurt

Today:
B: was out with ds's scouts doing some woodland conservation work so took some hard boiled eggs and pork scratchings
L: chorizo, shallot and cheese omelette with a big salad
D: planning a BBQ

I am in awe of those of you who manage 24 + hour fasts (4 days antimatter!?!?) I do the odd 16:8 but I really love food and I can't imagine going without it much longer!

Waswittyonce · 27/05/2018 13:56

I lost a stone or just over from adf a year or so ago, but the fasting days were really difficult and I couldn't handle it long term. Now I understand more about the effects of carbs, I bet the difficulty of fasting was more due to carb withdrawal than real hunger, I might give it another go.

SparklyGlitterPants · 27/05/2018 13:59

Afternoon all.

So glad to see the progress everyone is making.

Unfortunately I fell off the bandwagon. I not only fell I went arse over face and broke it and then set it on fire.

My husband ended up in hospital last weekend and is only home since yesterday. He's fine now thankfully but I spent the entire time living on convenience food (horrible pre-packaged sandwiches and junk food). As I mentioned before I stress eat also so yeah that really didn't help.

Back to day one of bootcamp for me.
On the plus side I have managed to get into a better sleeping/waking routine so have cut out the middle of the night chocolate feasts and once home in the evening from the hospital have been having salads for tea so while burning the bandwagon there is still a sliver of wood left almost untouched Grin

qumquat · 27/05/2018 14:07

On the subject of fasting I would just say that if you have had anorexia or been prone to periods of starving yourself it is not a good idea. I'm sure it can be very healthy but I know for me it could prompt a relapse. As a pp said I think you know yourself and know if it's something that would work for you or be a disaster so trust that feeling.

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2018 14:12

Re health conditions, I usually take anti inflammatory medication to help with the mild arthritis in my fingers. I haven't needed to take it for the past week as my fingers have been pain free.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/05/2018 14:44

@toomuchicecream

i find i get a horrible head ache when i eat sugar following a lc diet so that works as an incentive not to stray. its far worse then the headache i get during carb withdrawal.

abbey44 · 27/05/2018 14:46

I've just got back after a week away, visiting friends, and have updated spreadsheet for last Monday (the day after I went). My week has been lovely, but it's been very difficult to stick to my normal food routine without being incredibly rude when presented with meals, so I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's weigh-in. Back to first principles of Bootcamp for me. Actually, a week of just green tea would suit me just fine Grin

antimatter · 27/05/2018 15:02

@MumOfAPickle I just took one day at a time, I think is best to do it that way, I just missed one evening meal and next day I wasn't hungry so I thought why not

I was doing on most days 14:10 or 16:8 for a few months prior and that was good preparation. I think being happy and not under much stress over all in life would help too, also no social gatherings and I hardly drink alcohol anyway. My soft spots are for biscuits and cakes. I cooked for my son but hunger was gone when I had to do it. Appetite definitely lessens afterwards once (I think) you are in ketosis. The length I lasted surprised me. I wasn't competing with anyone or tried to prove anything just was curious and wasn't upset when I felt like breaking it.

RedPandaMama · 27/05/2018 17:59

Turns out drinking while low carbing is not good.

Had a cheese omelette before I went out and drank dry white wine with calorie free lemonade, I did have a lot to be fair but oh my LORD am I hungover today. I've gone a bit off the rails today and had chicken and veg soup, toast, ready salted crisps and a blueberry muffin. Back on low carb from now though and going to have chicken and bacon salad with mayo for tea.

Decided I'm not going to drink while eating this way. Never want to feel so ill again Sad

wherehavealltheflowersgone · 27/05/2018 18:02

That was me yesterday @RedPandaMama after a Friday night of drinking, never felt so bad Blush

I've just experimented with roasting Brussels sprouts in butter and Parmesan - looks YUM! Having it with pulled pork in BBQ sauce

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2018 18:48

That was me on Saturday too. Never again.

I was in a cafe with DH yesterday. I had a coffee, he had a coffee & a muffin. I was not even the slightest bit tempted to have anything other than the coffee, which is most unlike greedy old me.

OrlandaFuriosa · 27/05/2018 19:03

Fell off badly. But with no excuse. Still, I’m eating and drinking less of the unhelpful stuff. My downs are cheese - too much of - and alcohol.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/05/2018 19:34

For those of you eating lots of stirfry, i have made a change to our usual 'Bootcamp teryaki' as in teryaki sauce without the honey. so just garlic soy, sesame and ginger if you have it. I have discovered that adding the juice from half a lemon to this in the last minute or so really lightens the flavour so we are calling it our summer version. goes excellently with fish or prawns.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 27/05/2018 19:40

Hi, all.

As BIWI's on holiday, she asked if I would start the week 3 thread for her. I'm doing it a bit early as I'm such a lightweight these days that I'll be going to bed very soon, having been up at 4.30 and not at all because I'm trying to avoid drinking

AthelstaneTheUnready · 27/05/2018 19:41

LINK TO WEEK 3 THREAD IS HERE

AromaticSpices · 28/05/2018 09:49
