Week 2 - May '18 Low Carb Bootcamp - my favourite week!

Morning all

Here's the Spreadsheet

I love this week, seeing how much weight people lose, and especially as it's always such a surprise for newbies and those who feared that this WOE wouldn't work!

I hope you've all seen good results.

If you haven't - don't despair, but have a think about the week just gone. Look at what you were eating/drinking and consider how well you followed Bootcamp rules.

Any problems, as ever, post them on the thread.

And there are lots of johnnycake recipes, like mini pancakes. Yum. Of dear.

OrlandaFuriosa · 26/05/2018 22:33

Oldbirdy, I so agree! Especially if I am hostess..

prettybird · 26/05/2018 22:39

itchyknees - it's not, but I've been doing Boot Camp for a year now (albeit with about 6 weeks off the wagon Blush) so I'm used to this WoE.

Once you are keto-adapted, intermittent fasting (in particular 16:8 but also the occasional 24 hours fast) is ok - but only if it is right for you --and as long as you know yourself well enough to know that you won't get hungry and as a result fall face first into a plate of carbs Shock

Because I'm used to HFLC, but also have a bad habit of eating when I'm bored Blush, then a fast is a good way of getting me out of the habit Grin.

Thanks everyone for this thread, it is an important source of motivation!

Picked my some up today after 2 weeks away and he was quite surprised at my weight loss! He is going to try it after A Levels are over as revision has had quite an effect on his waist line!

Had a delish dinner or Aldi Thai prawns (freezer section) over a salad of watercress, spinach, rocket and avocado. Really tasty!

CodLiverOil556 · 27/05/2018 07:19

prettybird I enjoy fasting too and find it goes hand in hand with this WOE.

Rayna37 · 27/05/2018 07:26

I'm not keen on cookbooks in the kindle format but If you don't have it, Tom Kerridge's Dopamine Diet is 99p on Kindle today, definitely worth it for that!

Doing well, yesterday I had:
B: coffee with cream before parkrun, a tea with milk afterwards.
L: 2 bacon, 2 chipolatas (these are the only properly low carb sausages Aldi does), 2 fried eggs, some tinned toms.
D: garlic and chilli prawns with a bit of spinach then a Thai green curry with white fish and plenty of veg. Not made it before and was pretty good but have a few improvements in mind for next time! Down to my last pack of frozen cauli rice as Aldi seem to have discontinued it, need to find a new source. I know it's easy to make but I loved the speed and lack of mess, it went some way to replacing rice/pasta as a cupboard staple available instantly without planning.
Snacks: off bc but bc light approved: some manchego, some smoked almonds, a couple of strawberries in that amazing extra thick double cream I can happily eat it like yogurt but try not to

Off to Waitrose today, BBQ food in mind so hope weather ok!

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/05/2018 07:33

@ilovecherries

I'm the same regarding low carb cakes etc. I find that they are either rubbish or full of sweetener or not as low carb as you would hope. I am trying to treat this as an addition and that having something that tastes sweet is the equivalent of having 'one last ciggarette' saying that I'm planning to work on a zero sugar zero sweetener dessert soon which will only involve almonds, butter, eggs, cream and berries. I've been thinking about scones so will see if I can do something like that using berries instead of jam.
May turn out more like eton mess with almond Buiscuits instead of merengue.

Laska5772 · 27/05/2018 07:46

Well there was a small storm! ( some of you may have noticed it if you are in the south Grin). feeling much better today, slightly fuzzy and delicate, but on the mend..
I have already eaten three cold Turkey and courgette meatballs - these are so fab! as woke hungry.

Today we will be having a picnic on the beach with the little'uns as we promised .. even if its raining! (or if its really really raining a floor picnic in the conservatory). I have cold chicken and more meatballs in the armory for me .

my 2lb weight loss seems to have 'stuck' so far Smile

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/05/2018 07:49

I too would recommend fasting. It was a real revelation doing a 24hours water fast. You don't realise how deeply ingrained the 'hunger is bad' mantra is until you let it go and realise that it's ok to be hungry. You won't die!

We live in a time where we are constantly feeding and food is constantly available and 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day' and 'eat little and often' and 'never skip a meal' all advice that makes you consuuuuume, obey, watch TV etc etc. There is never advice to just NOT EAT. Governments want you to eat more. If everyone fasted for one day a week it would be an economic disaster!! 1 7th less food being consumed! ! Which is what 14%?

I knew intellectually that your matabolism don't slow down but doing it was very liberating. It was also good to get out of the rut regarding eating three meals a day out of habit. Now we often at weekend just have two meals so breakfast then an early dinner at 3/4 with perhaps a snack. So you don't actually eat until you are hungry (like thin people! !)

The best thing about fasting is that it's cheap, there is no menu. No cooking.

According to Michael mosley low carving and fasting have similar physiological effects. Fasting will sometimes give you low carb flu when you run out of carbs so actually the two diets go very well. I used both to lose weight for my wedding.

Laska5772 · 27/05/2018 07:55

I did really well on 5:2 a few years ago, but sadly got out of the habit ( and gradually quite a lot of the weigh ti had lost came back on) i also followed LC pretty much on 5:2 but not as strict as this WOE. .. I have been incorporating some 16:8 principles again since starting this bootcamp and feel really good for it.

RuffleBelly · 27/05/2018 08:15

I had a rubbish day yesterday, I felt so hungry and today I feel huge and bloated. I swear I've developed another tyre overnight and it's not time of the month or any other easy explanation.

I didn't cheat, everything was LCHF friendly but I feel huge this morning. The only thing I think was not enough water. I feel like I've gained all I lost the previous week which is hard when I have tried so hard. In two weeks the only thing I've had not on the plan is one can of Diet Coke. So yesterday:

B: Full fat Greek yoghurt (at 6am)
L: Scrambled egg and bacon (at 10:30am)
S: Cheese rolled in chorizo slices (at 4:30pm)
D: Pork belly with blue cheese, cabbage and spring greens (at 8:00pm).

I also ran three miles (hard work), did an hour's yoga class and a three hour walk. I think I probably had 2-2.5lt water which probably wasn't enough due to the exercise and sweating.

Destinysdaughter · 27/05/2018 08:15

@Rayna37 you can get frozen cauliflower rice at Iceland!

Justmuddlingalong · 27/05/2018 08:21

Almost 1lb down this morning. Definitely losing inches though. Feel so much better. Pot belly's gone and I just feel lighter IYKWIM. Hope everyone has a great day.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/05/2018 08:26

down half a pound today which is good considering the amount of fibre i had yesterday, i expected to have a temporary gain. hopefully this bodes well for monday weigh in!!

BlackMozart · 27/05/2018 08:39

I’m doing ok here. No cheating at all, reasonable on the water but I definitely don’t feel any different. I know I will be really fed up if I haven’t lost anything tomorrow having stuck to it. It is great to see the impressive losses people are getting and I don’t expect those but I would like something. Saturday is always a 2 meal day for me, a natural 16:8 and I could do a Sunday like that too. I might also have a go at a 5:2 version of this or even 4:3 this coming week to see if I can move things on a bit.

Currently having my guilty pleasure fix of Pioneer Woman on Food Network. I love her even though apart from her low carb episode most of her food isn’t for lchf.

Well done everyone.

LeapinLizards · 27/05/2018 08:46

@rayna you can also get frozen cauli rice at asda. I agree that it's v convenient (and I've got a prehistoric food processor).

I'm also a fan of IF. I've done 5:2 in the past & lost weight but the fasting days were awful - I came to loathe them - & I abandoned it. On this WOE, I do 16:8hrs though not everyday. Some days it's not practical for me & I don't sweat it.

@rufflebelly, I bet it's the water that's the problem. Or, rather, insufficient quantities. Your body's probably holding onto water after all that exercise. Maybe, though, if you drink heaps today then you'll get a whoosh tomorrow & reap the benefits?

AromaticSpices · 27/05/2018 08:57

Another 16:8 fan here. I do it every day and it definitely helps me.

MelanieCheeks · 27/05/2018 09:06

Another former 5:2 et here! I did enjoy it, and won't rule out some sort of hybrid in the future.

Scales almost down to the 10 stone milestone this morning, whoop whoop!

Prepping this week's meal plan, and looking forward to nuts and berries :-)

Sun: boiled eggs and cloud bread, baba ganoush, roast beef with celeriac dauphinoise and broccoli
Mon: yogurt and berries, Greek salad, mussels ( dh bought these, but the carb levels look ok so it'll be nice to share a meal)
Tues: scrambled egg, soup from freezer, chicken saag and cauli rice ( freezer in Tesco)
Wed: cloud bread and avo, squid and chorizo thing, paprika pork w green beans
Thurs: yoghurt, bacon and avo salad, shrimp stir fry with zero noodles
Fri: eggs, tuna mayo, cauli pizza
Sat: cottage cheese w berries and seeds, ham roll ups, poached chicken w creamed spinach
Sun: fry up, roast chicken

MrsBertBibby · 27/05/2018 09:14

I had an anxiety dream last night that I ate peanut butter on toast. Quite nice to wake up and realise I hadn't.

I have had Lemsip and night nurse syrup though so quite sugary.

BlackMozart · 27/05/2018 09:33

I promised the low carb scone recipes. Low carb instructions are at the end in italics. If you don’t have coconut flour for the cheese scones you can use all almond flour or ground almonds. The recipes definitely can make more than 6. I think I got 9 slightly smaller ones which brings the carbs down, particularly helpful on the cheese ones. Posting now because I won’t have time tomorrow but these are definitely for next week rather than today and I appreciate many won’t want to go near.

I meant to say the book is The Sugar Free Family Cookbook by Sarah Flower. It doesn’t have illustrations but that makes it cheaper than lots of others.

StuntNun · 27/05/2018 09:46

I'm off to the cinema with DS1 and DS2 to see Avengers Infinity War and we're planning a sneaky trip to McDonalds so I'm armed with some real vinaigrette instead of their nasty low fat salad dressing. Two bunless double cheeseburgers and a shaker side salad for me!

MrsBertBibby · 27/05/2018 09:50

Woah! Big drop this morning despite the sugary meds! Yesterday was 13st 9lb 3/4 , today is 13st 7lb 1/4. Wahey!

clare8allthepies · 27/05/2018 10:04

We had the Mexican scrambled eggs from the diet doctor website this morning. It would never have occurred to me to put pickled jalapeños in scrambled eggs but it was delicious!

Lonesurvivor · 27/05/2018 10:28

I do the 16/8 or 18/6 most days, I can't eat a breakfast so it's coming naturally to me on this plan. I hadn't thought of doing a full 24 hour fast, what would be the added benefit?

I had my first alcohol in four weeks (I started early) a tiny gin topped up with soda water and two glasses of wine.
It hasn't affected the scales today but still could I know. I've a pounding headache this morning though, and was very very tipsy last night. I think I'll stick to one or two small gins in future and keep topping with soda water.
