Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - The Big Stick is Back!

BIWI · 05/02/2018 06:42

Morning all!

Many thanks to @prettybird and @BerylStreep for running this Bootcamp so well, so far. It's been a bit weird watching from the sidelines Grin

However, I'm back. Back in the UK, back at work and back on the wagon.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for this week

I've noticed that there's quite a bit of 'slippage' going on over the last week or so. I know that we're able to move on to Bootcamp Light now, but be very, very careful that this doesn't lead to too many carbs. And remember to keep the water and the fat up.

Good luck this week

I have no idea why my laptop continues to correct 'carbing' to 'carving'. You'd think it would have realised I type it often enough! Grin

Am experiencing the dreaded Week 3 stall and now have the Week 4 stall to look forward to. Hey, ho.

BIWI · 10/02/2018 11:06

Just KOKO, @SchrodingersFrilledLizard - don't change anything if it's been working for you so far!

Thank you, BIWI, I need the encouragement as I'm also job-hunting. I kind of feel that I need some part of my life to go well.

Eh. Enough self-pity for one day! Grin

Lovely to read everyone’s achievements & progress. Really inspiring!

Right you lovely ladies. I’m in a bit of a tizzy. I started bc weighing on tradional scales. I did have electronic ones with a flat battery. Got batteries and weighed. I had an inckling the tradional ones were slightly off. But they are about 6 lbs out. Also I’ve discovered (due to dual weighing for a week) they are not consistent either Shock.

I know to get the most accurate record of weight loss and progress I need to reset the sof. But I am pants at that sort of thing and I can’t scroll straight so might end up putting info in wrong column Blush.

My weight recorded on 8th jan

old scales = 154. Needs changing to New scales = 160

Could someone be so kind as to amend the sof please? I’d be ever so grateful. Flowers

I’m not too disappointed as in real terms I’ve still lost the same weight.

A million thanks yous.

BerylStreep · 10/02/2018 12:30

Well done GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness!

I’m weighing in early, as I am going to be away from scales for the next few days. Down 2 lbs since last week! Smile I think it is completely cutting out the alcohol that has got the scales moving again. I’m now only 5lbs away from my 1st major goal.

BadlyParkedLandRover – I’ve noticed you mentioning keto flu a few times, and it’s hard to keep track as the threads move so fast, but it seems to have been lasting for ages. How long have you been feeling like this? Might it be something else? For me that ughh transition feeling only usually lasts 3 days, maybe 4.

Twoo – I’ve changed your staring weight to 160. You were showing 147.5 as last week’s weight.

StuntNun · 10/02/2018 12:53

SpiderKitty there isn't any requirement for carbs while breastfeeding but we do generally recommend Bootcamp Light as there isn't much evidence on the effect of eating low carb on breastfeeding. If you're feeling very thirsty it's often a sign that you need electrolytes, as others have said.

Rayna37 · 10/02/2018 12:54

Good day yesterday
B: coffee with cream, 2 egg omelette with mushrooms and Cheshire cheese, cooked in butter and coconut oil
L: Tuna and mayo with salad of spinach, cucumber, tomato and celery with oily dressing
D: Ribeye with cavolo nero, purple sprouting, shallots and mushrooms, and none of the Malbec DH opened even though it smelled delicious.

Got a buffet to tackle this evening but driving so no booze and will hopefully be inspired with some NSV of fitting into something nice out of my wardrobe (plus being surrounded by skinnies, it's the Athletic Club's do Grin).

Not likely to get much veg into me today! So far:
B: coffee with cream followed by first parkrun of the year and a big PBPB (post baby personal best!)
L: 2 eggs scrambled with butter and creme fraiche, avocado and smoked salmon.

Twoo · 10/02/2018 13:23

Thank you so much Beryl’. The 147.6 is not valid now. As all weights have moved up 6lb. Overall I’ve still lost the weight recorded as lost, if u see what I mean. So 147.6 should read 153.6 I think. On the one hand feel I’m back to square one, but I have still lost about 7lbs over bootcamp so far, which I’m pleased with.

I could have carried on weighing on the tradional scales but I knew it was all incorrect. So I’m prepared to increase my start weight, which I know will increase my current weight. Sorry for rambling, I’m just trying to explain it all. I wished I’d had new batteries from day one Grin

I know my bmi won’t be as improved as initially indicated but I will get there eventually.

Today’s Menu:-

B - none as not hungry.
L - Brocolli & kale sautéed in butter. Plated up with lashing of grated Parmesan. Quite lovely it was too.

Still as dry as a bone with alcohol. Not had any this year. Not missed it at all. I have a nice cellar of different sparkling waters Wink

Well done on your run Rayna

ilovecherries · 10/02/2018 13:31

Rangeover, I felt pretty crap for nearly a month. Just low grade 'not quite right', achey etc. I know it's not meant to last that long, and I suppose it might have been something else, but there was certainly nothing specific (apart for the hellish keto itch which also drove me crazy). I think at over 16 stone I wa probably just a bit of a metabolic mess and I'd gone totally cold turkey on the carbs, so it just took a while for my body to sort itself out. During that time, I drank a fair amount of bullion and clear soups made with home made stock. I also smelled horrible - not just my breath either, it seemed to seep from my pores. Anyway, 62 lbs later (Grin) it all sorted itself out and was entirely worth it, but I certainly didn't have the keto angels singing a celestial chorus initially. In fact, it was so miserable at times I suspect one of the reasins I've never strayed off plan is I don't want a repeat performance. Which I did get when I tried the egg fast. Oh my god, the ITCH. There is a (still fairly low) level of carbs I just can't drop under without feeling crap. But so long as I eat my FLGV every day, I manage to stay above it. Much as I'd like to pretend I need a slice of toast or a baked potato to help me through it, I really don't. A few pieces of pepper or some grated carrot brings me over my personal threshold just fine.

BlackMozart · 10/02/2018 13:45

I have just made the low carb ‘bread’ suggested on here last week I think. It makes a small quite flat loaf and I’ve had one slice toasted just with butter. Perfectly ok if not really bread but doesn’t to me taste too eggy.
Once it’s cold I am going to slice it and freeze in single slices so I am not tempted to eat the lot!

Twoo · 10/02/2018 13:49

Thank you for the bread review Black. I printed the recipe off last week but haven’t tried it yet.

SchrodingersFrilledLizard · 10/02/2018 14:10

The bread recipe is bookmarked.

I couldn't find a carb count for it, though. Is it not there or did I not look closely enough?

Rshard · 10/02/2018 14:12

I’m planning to make that bread so thanks for the review blackmozart. Did you use a 1lb loaf tin?

Well done on your pbpb rayna! Got out this morning and did 3k with dd, which was rainy but nice

prettybird · 10/02/2018 14:36

I'm going to try making Tom Kerridge's almond soda bread later today or tomorrow. I'll provide feedback Smile It uses five eggs Shock so I suspect it will be quite eggy.

I currently have his apple and walnut cake in the oven so that I can make low carb tiramisu for tomorrow night. Only it's not really walnut as I didn't have any walnut oil Confused - so instead of 50g walnut oil, I used 20g sesame oil mixed with 30g EV olive oil Blush. If the sesame is overpowering, I've got time to buy some walnut oil and have another attempt at making it tomorrow.

Grimbles · 10/02/2018 14:51

Grrr. I chose what I thought would be the perfect low carb meal at our lunch out today - fried chicken breast, fried halloumi and side salad. Both the chicken and halloumi had some kind of light batter-like coating on them, a bit like tempura. Not a mention of this on the menu.

I've had a brisk 4 miles walk in total today so hopefully that's helped undo some of the damage Sad

ilovecherries · 10/02/2018 14:56

I really hate when that happens, Grimbles. I ordered a chicken salad the other night and it came smothered in balsamic dressing. I scrutinised the menu to ensure I hadn't just missed something, then sent it back. Honestly, if i were going to have done un-proved carbs, I wouldn't be wasting them on a balsamic dressing on a sodding chicken salad! I felt unreasonably grumpy about it.

ilovecherries · 10/02/2018 14:56

Un-approved carbs.

prettybird · 10/02/2018 15:14

Angry on your behalf ilovecherries . I've sent things back in restaurants that have red or green peppers through them. If there is any hint that they might be included in the menu, I always check - but if it's not obvious I don't.

Coffee and sesame "walnut" cake is out of the oven and looking good. I'm wondering if I were to try it again, if I could substitute grated courgette for the 150g of grated apple.

BlackMozart · 10/02/2018 15:15

Schrodingers there isn’t a carb count that I could see but I think ground flax (linseed) is pretty low carb.Rshard yes a shallow loaf tin that is probably lb one but it doesn’t have a marking on it.

One of my favourite breakfasts before was a fried egg on toast so I can now try that (but not every day) with this bread.

StuntNun · 10/02/2018 15:46

NSV at a birthday party today with DS4. He insisted on feeding me a Haribo egg sweet "because you like eggs mummy" and I spat it out into a napkin when he wasn't looking! He wouldn't take no for an answer though so I didn't have much choice.

BIWI · 10/02/2018 15:51

I made the Tom Kerridge soda bread a while ago, and I was a bit disappointed to be honest. It didn't rise anything like the picture in the book, and it was a bit like eating savoury cake - not a bread texture at all.

I wondered if using 1/2 lb loaf tins might help it to rise more?

But I wasn't sufficiently impressed to try again!

Spiderkitty · 10/02/2018 15:56

LeapinLizards I had a cup of the boullion, I kind of wish I could say I got fed up of it halfway through, but I loved it! Then again, I did used to eat stock cubes as a child Grin

Thank you prettybird, I've just read up about night wakings with this WOE and I didn't realise they were common to start with. I co-sleep with DS so if I'm a bit unsettled in the night it does make him wake up, which may have contributed to all the night wakings we had last night!

StuntNun thank you, I've had a look at the bootcamp light rules so will have a go with that from tomorrow.

orkneyfudge · 10/02/2018 16:45

@spiderkitty, I am b/feeding and low carbing - my LO is older than yours but I started when he was 9m old. I track my meals on MFP and don't go below 30g carbs per day (usually hover around 40g but up to 50g is still ok for me).

I also get the ketoitch @ilovecherries! It's awful just now, especially on my feet!

I also get the thirst despite drinking loads!

My favourite low carb bread is the I Quit Sugar Inside Out bread.
