Morning all Flowers

[[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1W-L3Zo6bEtw-zwqIVGRzCfGSgX0ZUxlC3snVbEb-J-g/edit?usp=sharing Here's a link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness ]]

If you haven't already, have a really good look around it - check out all the lovely stuff on the tabs at the bottom.

And here are the rules. Print these out and make sure you keep them handy:

1. Eat three meals a day
If you're not adapted to low carbing, then you must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, and it doesn’t have to be absolutely first thing, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry between meals. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack).

After the first two weeks of Bootcamp we will relax this, but these two weeks are critical in terms of helping you switch easily to a low carb way of eating - and if you start to feel hungry, it makes things much harder!

A typical high carbohydrate diet can mean that snacking is a routine part of your day. Once your blood sugar levels are stable, by eating low carb, you should find that you no longer want to snack. But the rule of thumb here is ‘if you are hungry, eat!’. (Just make sure you are only choosing low carb snacks, of course!)

2. Avoid processed foods.
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals - meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. You can have them, but just not every day. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins bars.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat will not make you fat. Honestly! But it will keep your appetite satisfied, and it sustains your body’s energy requirements perfectly. Fat does not provoke an insulin spike, unlike carbs which do (a lot) and protein (a little). Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. Make sure that you focus on eating those vegetables that are 3-4g carb per 100g or less, and this will ensure that your carb counts are kept low. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

5. Be careful about dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited)
Dairy can impede weight loss for some people. If you drink tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day.

There are a lot of carbs in milk, so if you are having several cups of tea/coffee per day, you will quickly rack up your daily carb count (e.g. 1 medium latte contains more than 12g carbs!) You may eat cheese but again, don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. I think Total Full Fat is the best, but other posters have also discovered a good one at Lidl.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it.

Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol
Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit
Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After the first two weeks of Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds
Whilst these make a very good low carb snack, and can be added back in after these first two weeks, they are very moreish and can quickly become very carby. Also, carb counts vary enormously. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest.

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners
Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

SpiderWilly - yes! Fat satisfies your appetite more quickly so you want to eat less.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 09/10/2017 20:28

Oh man I really want a Diet Coke. I am definitely an addict! Day 1 nearly done though!

BIWI · 09/10/2017 20:29

Absolutely @SpiderWilly! It's one of the great joys and advantages of low carbing!

I've been eating a ketogenic diet for 5 weeks and did a low carb diet earlier in the summer. Have lost just over 2 stone since May. Looking forward to some company to keep me on the straight and narrow, especially with weekday wine. Today I was travelling with work so had to pick up lunch on the go and make a quick tea. Probably a bit too heavy on the processed meat.
B: nothing (already fat adapted so used to it)
L: smoked salmon, boiled egg and spinach pot, mini pack of chipolatas and cheese portion from m&s
D: bacon, mushroom, asparagus in creamy, cheesy paprika sauce with courgette ribbons instead of pasta.

JumpingIntoLCHF · 09/10/2017 20:36

Thanks @BIWI

Still can't work out how to add myself to the spread sheet.

SpiderWilly · 09/10/2017 20:41

Thanks Grimbles and BIWI I thought there was something wrong with me! I need to adjust my portions.

Escapepeas · 09/10/2017 20:42

The water isn't a problem for me luckily as I always drink about 4l a day anyway and don't really do fizzy drinks.

Just had my prawn curry with cauli rice and it was fab! I can add the recipe to the other thread if anyone's interested.

BrassicaBabe · 09/10/2017 20:44

My veg today was in my salad BIWI. But it was a little light today Blush.

Planning on courgettes with coriander pesto tomorrow.

on the Diet Coke front.

I need a wine replacement/drink for the evening. I don't drink tea/coffee or vodka. Is there a low carb soft drink I can have?

Flisspaps · 09/10/2017 20:44

@78Ash Hot water with a good squeeze of lemon should do the trick (and a couple of paracetamol!)

cabbage67 · 09/10/2017 20:48

Good first day.

2 creamy coffees
scrambled egg and ham for lunch
steak stir fry with bare naked noodles
2.5 litres water

FinallyHere · 09/10/2017 20:55

TimbuktuTimbuktu (anything to do with Cabin Pressure?).

Sorry to read that you are craving diet coke. I have a bit of a craving for some chocolate, for the first time since i started this lark last March. My strongest reason for not giving into the desire, is that caving in just makes the desire stronger next time. It really is easiest for me to make a stand now.

I do sometimes have chocolate, 100% dark Montezuma stuff, but only indulge at the weekend. This s the first day if bootcamp and I never cheat in day one (!)

Hope you craving gies away, it was helpful to be reminded how indulging makes the craving grow stronger. I'm all good now, hope you are too.

YoLoNovVitMe · 09/10/2017 20:58

Again for the diet coke addicts...you probably have a caffeine addiction going on there. Don't mix up caffeine withdrawal headache when it hits with carb flu and then give up bc. Substitute diet coke with coffee with double cream or tea. Make it iced if you don't like hot drinks. If you can't stomach tea or coffee for the caffeine hit instead then cut the diet cokes down gradually over the first week. Replace with fruit tea infused fizzy water.

I know that's not strict bc but it's better than going cold turkey, getting caffeine withdrawal and giving up boot camp altogether. Shouldn't take more than a week to kick the habit.

My name is Yolo and I'm addicted to caffeine and cabbage Grin

NotThereEileen · 09/10/2017 21:13

Mmmmmm diet coke. I've put the stash in the shed so I can't be bothered to get it.
B: greek yog and double cream. Creamy coffee
L: fried halloumi salad and dressing
D: courgetti fried in butter, meatballs and parmesan
S: boiled egg and mayo

DartmoorDoughnut · 09/10/2017 21:27

B-omelette with ham and cheese
L-salad with some chicken and a small bit of bacon
D- little gem lettuce with home made tuna mayo (full fat)
S-celery

LOTS of water, about 8/9 pints, I seem to have a constant dry mouth?!

prettybird · 09/10/2017 21:28

Another tip for upping veg intake and adding fat is to microwave your veg with a generous slice of butter. I shove cauliflower florets or sliced runner beans or brussel sprouts or sliced cabbage in a bowl, put a plate on top (easier than cling film) and microwave for a couple of minutes or so, give it a shoogle and then microwave for another couple of minutes. (Cauliflower or brussels might need a bit more time).

Season with salt and pepper.

Hippadippadation · 09/10/2017 21:32

brassica Try sparkling water over a fruit / herbal tea bag. Very nice. Or just slimline soda / tonic water.

starsky22 · 09/10/2017 21:37

Evening all! Logged on this morning and inputted my weight, but haven't had a chance to post until now and still need to read the full thread, but wanted to say hi and welcome to all the newbies!

I joined the last bootcamp, about 4 weeks in and very quickly realised how great this woe is, because you lose weight, but get to eat yummy food and don't have to starve yourself. I continued with LCHF after bootcamp and have lost 2 stone in total. However had a bit of a carby Saturday and put on 2lbs over the weekend, so really glad to be back on it today. Plan is to lose those 2lbs and another 7lbs and a few inches too.

Also used the scales in Boots to check my body fat percentage today for the first time and it is 39.3% Shock so hoping that comes down too, I dread to think what it was 3 months ago before I lost 2 stone!

Today:
Snack - slices of cheese
L - pork steak, celeriac mash, mushrooms in cream
D - courgetti carbonara
Lots of water!

BIWI · 09/10/2017 21:39

If you find yourself thirsty, despite drinking gallons of water, it's a sign that you need more sodium, apparently.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 09/10/2017 21:39

Yes finallyhere! Love it when someone else gets the reference.

Thanks for your support. It is helpful to remember why I'm doing this. Diet Coke is my only real caffeine so I am definitely going through withdrawal from that as well. It's ok though I'm expecting it and I'd rather get rid of everything in one go. Last time I quit smoking as well!

I might go and have a green tea instead though- might help.

Patapouf · 09/10/2017 21:41

Hello all, it was lovely to see some familiar names on the sign up thread.

I'm just checking in to say that I won't be present for the first two weeks of BC because I'm on hols so I'll be starting Bc when you lot move onto BC lite.

I'm currently in psychotherapy to address some of my ED issues so I, hopeful that I will be able to break the cycle of doing really well on BC and then regaining half the weight inebtween BCs as self sabotage.

prettybird · 09/10/2017 21:54

Need to announce a NSV actually it's not as it's just following Boot Camp but it feels like a Victory Smile

Dh has had a stressful day today (fallout from an incident at the rugby club yesterday, which he's been fielding calls about and having to write a report on it even though he was refereeing the U16 game on the other pitch at the time Confused) so decided to open a bottle of wine. He chose to open a wine we hadn't tried yet (we run a wee hobby wine business) Hmm I tasted some from his glass (so that I can describe it honestly when I'm selling it) and even though it was very nice and great value for the price Wink I didn't have any more than that Grin

BIWI · 09/10/2017 21:58

I'm very impressed, @prettybird!

Hi all,

I'm another Diet Coke addict - I've decided for now, that I can have it while I'm out instead of alcohol but won't buy anymore for the house.

Tried courgette noodles for the first time today - very nice!

Thiswillbemyusername · 09/10/2017 22:14

What does NSV mean?

CobOnTheCorn · 09/10/2017 22:24

I'm really pleased with my first day but I'm wondering if I've eaten too much veg...

B: scrambled eggs, spinach and tomatoes
L: mushroom soup, goats cheese
D: sausages, leeks, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, fennel
