Preparing for the pre-summer Low Carb Bootcamp - starting next week!

BIWI · 16/05/2017 08:59

Morning all!

So next week sees the start of our next Bootcamp. It will last, as usual, for 10 weeks, so will take us nicely up to the summer/school holidays.

If you're going to join us, and especially if you haven't low carbed before, it's really important that you plan for it, and start to think about what you're going to shop for, cook and eat. Failing to plan ahead is one of the key reasons why most people drop out early on!

The first two weeks of Bootcamp are the strictest, but after this period, things relax a little. The idea of the initial strict phase is to ensure that you switch your body from burning carbs, to burning fat.

Overall, these are the foods that you won't be eating at all during Bootcamp:

bread in any form
pasta/noodles
rice
potatoes
sugar (which includes honey/agave syrup/maple syrup)
chocolate
flour

During the stricter first two weeks, you also exclude:

fruit
nuts
alcohol

The idea of Bootcamp is that it's easy to follow - in that there is no weighing or counting of anything (unless you want to). Just follow the rules and you will be fine. However, although it's easy to follow, it's not always easy to do, because for many of us it can be such a change in eating habits and patterns.

The British diet has changed considerably in the last 50 years or so - whereas we used to be meat and two veg, plus potatoes - now, many if not most of our meals are based around carbs - pasta and sauce, or rice-based dishes, for example. And this has been compounded by government advice, which says we should base our diets on carbohydrates and avoid fat wherever we can.

When you're low carbing, you'll be reversing that, which feels very alien! So instead of a diet which is carbs:protein:fat, you'll be switching it round to fat:protein:carbs.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you've been eating a high carb diet for a long time, you may start to feel pretty rubbish

This is called carb flu - essentially you're withdrawing from sugar, which is a highly addictive substance. Your body treats carbs in the same way as it does sugar, and you may find it quite hard going to lose the sugar from your diet.

However, it generally passes quickly and once you're through it - if you suffer; not everyone does - you'll find that you feel great and full of energy. If you do suffer, up your salt intake (as we drink a lot of water, it's important that we keep our sodium intake higher) and also your fat. Take some paracetamol if you feel headachey, and just remind yourself that it's a good thing!

*Planning your meals is a really good idea. Have a look at the top of the Bootcamp topic, and you'll find a Bootcamp recipe thread - loads of lovely recipes there to inspire you. As far as possible, try and choose meals that you can make for the whole family, so you're not having to prepare different meals. It won't harm anyone to eat a low carb meal, and you're a lot more likely to stick to it if it's easy for you to do! Think about the meals that you like that aren't so carb-heavy, and make those - so if spaghetti bolognese and chilli with rice would normally feature, swap those for meals that you can easily make low carb - e.g. salmon with salad and green veg, or roast chicken with roast veg (just not roast potatoes!). Shepherds pie can be made with a mash made from celeriac, or cauliflower, or swede.

Think about what you're going to eat during the day; on-the-go eating is really tough for low carbers, because most food outlets are based on carbs - sandwiches, burgers, muffins, etc.

Make sure you've read and understand Bootcamp rules! I'll post these separately. Print them out if it helps!

Each week, I'll start a new chat thread, and I'll post a link to the spreadsheet that we use to track our weight. (You don't have to be added to the spreadsheet if you don't want to).

On the spreadsheet, on the tabs at the bottom, are links to lots of important information, and you'll find the Bootcamp rules there. There are also links to lots of articles, blogs and videos about low carbing, which will help to inspire and inform you.

It's really important that you understand the thinking and science behind low carbing, so do as much reading as you can. It's especially important that you're armed with some key facts about it, because even though low carbing is becoming more common, you'll still find that people around you will rubbish it - mostly people can't understand why you're eating so much fat and expecting to lose weight!

Anyway, that's enough for now!

I can't shop until payday later in the week and will have to low carb as best I can with what is in. Tomorrow will be
Hardboiled egg for breakfast
Left over beef stew for lunch( minus the potatoes) and natural yoghurt
Dinner - fish and broccoli.

Will that do?

HemanOrSheRa · 21/05/2017 18:08

StuntNun How do you make your low carb gravy? And where are the chorizo crisps in M&S you mentioned up thread? Smile

Giraffeski · 21/05/2017 18:09

Olives will be perfect snack, and not at all noticeable as we all like them so won't look weird to put them out in the evening alongside the crisps Smile

Has anyone tried coffee with butter and coconut oil? thinking of trying this.

StuntNun · 21/05/2017 18:27

Heman I use a tiny sprinkle of McDougall's thickening granules which is about 3g carbs in the whole quantity of gravy. It doesn't thicken it very much, but it does give it a nice smooth consistency not like DH's gravy which always has a nasty oily layer on top. Tonight's chicken was roasted in a chicken brickk* with some white wine, a stock cube, a halved lemon, salt, pepper and thyme added to the brick. At the end of cooking the juices are practically gravy already, just need to separate off the fat and add a little water from the vegetables to make perfect gravy.

The chorizo crisps were with the crackling crisps in the fridge in M&S. Iirc they had salami crisps too. I have ordered some chorizo slices and some more Brie to try and make my own. I'm guessing a spritz of olive oil and a few minutes in a moderate oven will do the job.

Giraffeski I went through a bulletproof coffee phase and quite like it. If you are going to try it then work your way up gradually otherwise you will make yourself feel sick. Note that in Dave Asprey's Bulletproof Diet the Bulletproof Coffee replaces breakfast. If you have weight to lose then they aren't that good an idea as the calorie content is so high and they aren't very nutritious so you may end up overeating just to get the micronutrients you need. Where they can be useful is when you're within about half a stone of your ideal weight and boosting your fat macro can help with weight loss.

BIWI · 21/05/2017 18:29

Does he do it deliberately? Because surely he must have got the hang of low carbing by now, what with it bring your job and everything?!

Giraffe How about pork scratchings or the pork scratching crisps that BIWI mentioned up thread? You can make cheese crisps, they are delicious and really easy. The recipe is on the boot camp recipe thread right at the start. It's basically little mounds of grated cheddar or parmesan baked in the oven.

Nosocksevermatchup · 21/05/2017 18:31

Hi. I'd like to join, but not sure how to add myself to the list. I can't seem to copy all the names on my phone. Can I just ask to join?

JiminnyCricket · 21/05/2017 18:36

Died and gone to low carb heaven!

Thai green chicken curry with lime and coriander cauliflower rice... bit yum.

I'm stuffed. Totally worth it. Grin

HemanOrSheRa · 21/05/2017 18:49

Ooh thank you StuntNun. I have used those granules in the past. I didn't realise they were lowish carb. I cook my chicken in my Instant Pot pressure cooker so get a nice amount of liquid that just needs skimming and thickening. Doesn't look as attractive as a chicken cooked in a brick though. I shall be off to our local M&S Simply Food tomorrow to grab chorizo and pork scratching crisps! I can grab some of the pork belly slices too which are usually in the 3 for £10 deal.

wombattoo · 21/05/2017 18:57

Nosocks I'll add you to the list.
Welcome back flummoxed Thanks

Giraffeski · 21/05/2017 19:28

@stuntnun that makes sense, perhaps I'll save them for when I feel I need to up fat content.
@heman the chorizo and crackling crisps sound like a good idea, especially as if we go out for a walk everyone else will be munching on carby snacks! I might try babybels and Pepperamis too for packed lunches on walks.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 21/05/2017 19:28

So I decided to start the LCHF today - which meant instead of grilled bacon and poached eggs I had fried bacon, fried eggs and fried mushrooms (all in butter!) for breakfast with fresh tomatoes and a coffee. Was very exciting!

Lunch was a couple of small pieces of Brie, a few olives and a tin of tuna mixed with fresh FF mayo. Delicious!

Dinner is going to be chicken pizza bake (basically chicken chunks cooked in a tomato and oregano sauce, put into an oven dish and covered with mozzarella and salami) with a load of brocolli.

I happen to have a tub of the Oppo ice-cream in the freezer that I saw BIWI recommend (mint not caramel) that I bought ages ago so may have a scoop or two of that as well. Smile

MOIST · 21/05/2017 19:33

Ice cream? Shock

This eating fat thing is going to take a bit of getting used to.
However. My stir fry was delicious Grin

MOIST, I suspect it is verboten with effect from tomorrow (at least for the first two weeks!) but it is high fat, low sugar:

www.oppoicecream.co.uk

(Hope that has worked, can't remember for the life of me how to add links...)

HemanOrSheRa · 21/05/2017 19:55

DP is very happy that I am LCHFing again! I've just told him we'll have belly of pork and meatzza this week Grin. DS is cooking bolognese sauce in school tomorrow Confused. Gawd knows what it'll be like. I'll have mine with courgetti fried in butter and grated parmesan to disguise the taste.

What carb content are we looking for in shop bought mayo? I'm happy to make my own but I have a very large squeezy bottle of Hellmann's in the fridge which is 1.4g/100g. Is this OK?

wombattoo · 21/05/2017 20:10

Heman I use Hellmans and it hasn't prevented me from losing.

HemanOrSheRa · 21/05/2017 20:17

Thank you wombattoo Smile. That is excellent as it is a huge bottle and I've not long opened it. And it means I am sorted for lunch tomorrow. I've hard boiled some eggs for breakfast as well. I am scaring myself with how organised I am. I even have a 2l bottle of water chilling in the fridge Shock.

StuntNun · 21/05/2017 20:26

Heman the thickening granules aren't low carb but I use less than a teaspoon just to emulsify the gravy and give it a gravy-like texture.

BIWI I don't think DH is capable of learning new information to be honest. If he didn't learn something as a teenager then he just can't seem to grasp it. So he'll make the same mistakes over and over again and never learn. No idea what's going on there. Just some weird rigidity in his thinking.

Lucked · 21/05/2017 20:52

okay so starting tomorrow and I need a plan to deal with constipation, anytime I cut out cereals and grains I get really constipated and bloated even on high veg/fruit diets. I will be increasing veg but the lack is fruit is worrying especially as I am really not a morning person and can't face cooked food so will be having yogurt.

dustmotesinthesun · 21/05/2017 20:56

I just had the nicest supper.

Stir fried strips of beef and lots of cauliflower with a teaspoon of coriander paste (bought at Waitrose) stirred through it. It added a huge dollop of mayo to my bowlful once I'd plated up. It was SO GOOD

HemanOrSheRa · 21/05/2017 21:00

Have you tried psyllium husk Lucked? I know they recommend it on the Idiot Proof Diet.

AdalindSchade · 21/05/2017 21:01

Checking in! I started last Sunday actually but have been allowing myself nuts and 81% dark chocolate in small quantities so they have to go tomorrow. I totally agree that I don't need to snack in between meals on this woe but I am psychologically dependent on snacking and get anxious if it's too long before my next meal Blush so I do need to take extras with me to work. Tomorrow I will take some yoghurt and cheese. I'm also going to marinate some olives so I can have a portion of tasty olives rather than just having them from the jar as they are pretty cheap and only good in things usually.
Lidl Greek yoghurt is 3.2g per 100g so even less than total and half the price

dustmotesinthesun · 21/05/2017 21:05

God, Oppo looks lovely. Will definitely be buying at some point. Does the bitterness of Stevia come through?

Lucked · 21/05/2017 21:37

I have Herman but not for a while, will pick some up tomorrow. I usually end up resorting to senna but it can give me cramping.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 21/05/2017 21:37

Dust I will let you know shortly Grin
