Preparing for the pre-summer Low Carb Bootcamp - starting next week!

BIWI · 16/05/2017 08:59

Morning all!

So next week sees the start of our next Bootcamp. It will last, as usual, for 10 weeks, so will take us nicely up to the summer/school holidays.

If you're going to join us, and especially if you haven't low carbed before, it's really important that you plan for it, and start to think about what you're going to shop for, cook and eat. Failing to plan ahead is one of the key reasons why most people drop out early on!

The first two weeks of Bootcamp are the strictest, but after this period, things relax a little. The idea of the initial strict phase is to ensure that you switch your body from burning carbs, to burning fat.

Overall, these are the foods that you won't be eating at all during Bootcamp:

bread in any form
pasta/noodles
rice
potatoes
sugar (which includes honey/agave syrup/maple syrup)
chocolate
flour

During the stricter first two weeks, you also exclude:

fruit
nuts
alcohol

The idea of Bootcamp is that it's easy to follow - in that there is no weighing or counting of anything (unless you want to). Just follow the rules and you will be fine. However, although it's easy to follow, it's not always easy to do, because for many of us it can be such a change in eating habits and patterns.

The British diet has changed considerably in the last 50 years or so - whereas we used to be meat and two veg, plus potatoes - now, many if not most of our meals are based around carbs - pasta and sauce, or rice-based dishes, for example. And this has been compounded by government advice, which says we should base our diets on carbohydrates and avoid fat wherever we can.

When you're low carbing, you'll be reversing that, which feels very alien! So instead of a diet which is carbs:protein:fat, you'll be switching it round to fat:protein:carbs.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you've been eating a high carb diet for a long time, you may start to feel pretty rubbish

This is called carb flu - essentially you're withdrawing from sugar, which is a highly addictive substance. Your body treats carbs in the same way as it does sugar, and you may find it quite hard going to lose the sugar from your diet.

However, it generally passes quickly and once you're through it - if you suffer; not everyone does - you'll find that you feel great and full of energy. If you do suffer, up your salt intake (as we drink a lot of water, it's important that we keep our sodium intake higher) and also your fat. Take some paracetamol if you feel headachey, and just remind yourself that it's a good thing!

*Planning your meals is a really good idea. Have a look at the top of the Bootcamp topic, and you'll find a Bootcamp recipe thread - loads of lovely recipes there to inspire you. As far as possible, try and choose meals that you can make for the whole family, so you're not having to prepare different meals. It won't harm anyone to eat a low carb meal, and you're a lot more likely to stick to it if it's easy for you to do! Think about the meals that you like that aren't so carb-heavy, and make those - so if spaghetti bolognese and chilli with rice would normally feature, swap those for meals that you can easily make low carb - e.g. salmon with salad and green veg, or roast chicken with roast veg (just not roast potatoes!). Shepherds pie can be made with a mash made from celeriac, or cauliflower, or swede.

Think about what you're going to eat during the day; on-the-go eating is really tough for low carbers, because most food outlets are based on carbs - sandwiches, burgers, muffins, etc.

Make sure you've read and understand Bootcamp rules! I'll post these separately. Print them out if it helps!

Each week, I'll start a new chat thread, and I'll post a link to the spreadsheet that we use to track our weight. (You don't have to be added to the spreadsheet if you don't want to).

On the spreadsheet, on the tabs at the bottom, are links to lots of important information, and you'll find the Bootcamp rules there. There are also links to lots of articles, blogs and videos about low carbing, which will help to inspire and inform you.

It's really important that you understand the thinking and science behind low carbing, so do as much reading as you can. It's especially important that you're armed with some key facts about it, because even though low carbing is becoming more common, you'll still find that people around you will rubbish it - mostly people can't understand why you're eating so much fat and expecting to lose weight!

Anyway, that's enough for now!

Meals not mess Blush

Asmoto · 16/05/2017 19:25

Could I join please? I have decided to low-carb for a couple of months before my holiday. I am looking for meal inspiration, as when I have low-carbed before I seem to end up eating nothing but steak or bacon and tons of cheese! Hoping I can lose a stone Smile.

AvaCrowder2 · 17/05/2017 00:12

Some really inspiring threads in this topic. I'd like to try this, for my skin and energy as much as anything.

I'm not really heavy, but have become a bit wobbly.

Can you eat parsnips and pulses?

JiminnyCricket · 17/05/2017 06:26

AvaCrowder2 nope, no parsnips or pulses I'm afraid as they are very carby.

As a general rule, if it tastes sweet it's probably too carby!

BIWI · 17/05/2017 06:26

Nope! Not on Bootcamp anyway. Both too carby. If you think how sweet parsnips taste that's a clue Smile

I'm so up for this. I felt amazing on the last bootcamp I did - so much more energy. Then Christmas happened and I descended into carby twatness. I felt terrible! Have gone back to eating low carb 80% of the time but I need the discipline of bootcamp. I struggle most with visiting other people's houses.

StuntNun · 17/05/2017 07:03

Asmoto there's a whole thread of low carb recipess*.

Asmoto · 17/05/2017 07:14

Thanks - that looks really inspiring! On a more mundane level, I never thought of eating pork scratchings before!

AvaCrowder2 · 17/05/2017 10:19

Thanks BIWI and Jiminny I thought as much. I had seen a recipe for cauliflower and parsnip purée, which sounded really nice, but I'm quite keen to give this a proper go.

BIWI · 17/05/2017 10:44

If you like pork scratchings, look what M&S have just launched:

I would like to join please. I currently weigh 11st 5lbs and would ideally like to lose 2st before the summer. I keep starting and doing well for a few days but then give in to cravings! Having some support on here might help me Smile

BIWI · 17/05/2017 13:23

You're very welcome!

Just add your name to the list here

I'm in ladies! Started on Monday and already seen a drop on the scales (I know, I know but I couldn't resist!) am a convert from slimming world so it does feel weird to be eating in a totally opposite way, but I will get used to it! Love it so far though!

Asmoto · 17/05/2017 16:30

Those M&S things look great - I know where I'll be going tomorrow lunchtime!

notevenamum1 · 17/05/2017 16:47

Hi Gals! (and any guys!)

So I am new to mums net but unfortunately not new to dieting.

As a bit of background, I am 5ft8/9, 13st 5 :O and have historically struggled with my weight.

This thread is pretty ideal for me as was planning on starting a low carb high fat and high protein diet from Monday anyway. This is has all stemmed from a meeting I had with potentially a new PT yesterday. He basically told me to ditch the scales and to stop calorie counting which is something I have been doing the past couple of weeks.

He said its all in the diet - I have to eat very clean 95% of the time, high protein, high fat, zero processed carbs. Basically if a caveman would eat it then I can, otherwise it's a no no.

He will also train me once a week and give me workouts to do 2-3 times a week on my own. He will use callipers to take a body fat % at the start and re-measure once a month.

Obviously PT isnt cheap but I can just about afford it if I am super careful with the rest of the spending. I guess you can't really put a price on health and I am just so sick of being unhappy about the way I look that I am pretty determined to get my head down and do this.

PT would start the day after so Tuesday 23rd May.

Hoping this thread gives me the motivation, encouragement and ideas that I will need for my nutritional point of view. I will be keeping a food diary which the PT will review and provide feedback on once a week so more than happy to share those on here if it will help anyone xx

Welcome!

If you're going to join us on Bootcamp, it's high fat, medium protein and low carbs. You should be getting your carbs from vegetables and salad.

But in the main, I think your PT is right - and it's definitely worth paying for someone who's going to help and support you in this way!

Bootcamp, of course, is free ... Grin

Evening BIWI. We've edited your title for you to avoid any political confusion! Good luck with boot camp, everyone!

I'm joining. I've put my name on the list several times and then forgotten about it so this time I'm committing to it. I know it works...I lost 3 stone a few years ago really easily on this woe but it's all crept back on. Time to sort it out! I'm low carbing since last week and have lost 2lbsSmile. The first week is hardest for me, once I establish the good habits I know I can koko. Off on holidays at the end of June and ideally I would love to have another 12 lbs gone by then.

Daisy62 · 18/05/2017 08:59

Joining in bootcamp! Have been trying to eat LCHF for 3 weeks but have been having nuts, tofu and some pulses. Am a vegetarian and don't eat quorn/meat subs. Finding that too much cheese makes me put on weight on LCHF. Disappointed to have lost only 2lbs so far but trying to stay positive. Will try the boot camp, cutting out the nuts and pulses, but am apprehensive... I do a lot of exercise and am worried about lack of protein affecting my energy levels. I've got Rose Elliot's low carb books but finding them uninspiring and very heavy on quorn, protein powder etc which I don't want to eat. I've got about 12lbs to lose. Any tips from vegetarians would be great. Good luck everyone!

StuntNun · 18/05/2017 12:50

Do you eat eggs Daisy? A great source of protein, cheap and low carb - what more could you ask?
