Preparing for the pre-summer Low Carb Bootcamp - starting next week!

BIWI · 16/05/2017 08:59

Morning all!

So next week sees the start of our next Bootcamp. It will last, as usual, for 10 weeks, so will take us nicely up to the summer/school holidays.

If you're going to join us, and especially if you haven't low carbed before, it's really important that you plan for it, and start to think about what you're going to shop for, cook and eat. Failing to plan ahead is one of the key reasons why most people drop out early on!

The first two weeks of Bootcamp are the strictest, but after this period, things relax a little. The idea of the initial strict phase is to ensure that you switch your body from burning carbs, to burning fat.

Overall, these are the foods that you won't be eating at all during Bootcamp:

bread in any form
pasta/noodles
rice
potatoes
sugar (which includes honey/agave syrup/maple syrup)
chocolate
flour

During the stricter first two weeks, you also exclude:

fruit
nuts
alcohol

The idea of Bootcamp is that it's easy to follow - in that there is no weighing or counting of anything (unless you want to). Just follow the rules and you will be fine. However, although it's easy to follow, it's not always easy to do, because for many of us it can be such a change in eating habits and patterns.

The British diet has changed considerably in the last 50 years or so - whereas we used to be meat and two veg, plus potatoes - now, many if not most of our meals are based around carbs - pasta and sauce, or rice-based dishes, for example. And this has been compounded by government advice, which says we should base our diets on carbohydrates and avoid fat wherever we can.

When you're low carbing, you'll be reversing that, which feels very alien! So instead of a diet which is carbs:protein:fat, you'll be switching it round to fat:protein:carbs.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you've been eating a high carb diet for a long time, you may start to feel pretty rubbish

This is called carb flu - essentially you're withdrawing from sugar, which is a highly addictive substance. Your body treats carbs in the same way as it does sugar, and you may find it quite hard going to lose the sugar from your diet.

However, it generally passes quickly and once you're through it - if you suffer; not everyone does - you'll find that you feel great and full of energy. If you do suffer, up your salt intake (as we drink a lot of water, it's important that we keep our sodium intake higher) and also your fat. Take some paracetamol if you feel headachey, and just remind yourself that it's a good thing!

*Planning your meals is a really good idea. Have a look at the top of the Bootcamp topic, and you'll find a Bootcamp recipe thread - loads of lovely recipes there to inspire you. As far as possible, try and choose meals that you can make for the whole family, so you're not having to prepare different meals. It won't harm anyone to eat a low carb meal, and you're a lot more likely to stick to it if it's easy for you to do! Think about the meals that you like that aren't so carb-heavy, and make those - so if spaghetti bolognese and chilli with rice would normally feature, swap those for meals that you can easily make low carb - e.g. salmon with salad and green veg, or roast chicken with roast veg (just not roast potatoes!). Shepherds pie can be made with a mash made from celeriac, or cauliflower, or swede.

Think about what you're going to eat during the day; on-the-go eating is really tough for low carbers, because most food outlets are based on carbs - sandwiches, burgers, muffins, etc.

Make sure you've read and understand Bootcamp rules! I'll post these separately. Print them out if it helps!

Each week, I'll start a new chat thread, and I'll post a link to the spreadsheet that we use to track our weight. (You don't have to be added to the spreadsheet if you don't want to).

On the spreadsheet, on the tabs at the bottom, are links to lots of important information, and you'll find the Bootcamp rules there. There are also links to lots of articles, blogs and videos about low carbing, which will help to inspire and inform you.

It's really important that you understand the thinking and science behind low carbing, so do as much reading as you can. It's especially important that you're armed with some key facts about it, because even though low carbing is becoming more common, you'll still find that people around you will rubbish it - mostly people can't understand why you're eating so much fat and expecting to lose weight!

Anyway, that's enough for now!

So, I have £18 to provide food for 2 people for a week...

DP recently changed jobs, we thought he'd get paid on the 25th but it turns out his first pay check isn't until the 1st June Sad

I get paid on 25th but mortgage and bills come out of my wage and DP pays for food (he earns about half what I do)...

Question is, do we think I can feed 2 adults an LCHF diet for 7 days on £18??

About to go to Morrisons, pray for me. Sad

MOIST · 21/05/2017 09:36

I'm in. I am fat, have been fat forever. I am also a GF veggie so being HFLC will just add a few more consonants to my list.
Off to Waitrose to stock up..

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/05/2017 09:40

Can I just check I've got this right, at the risk of sounding like a proper newbie......
So every Monday a new chat thread is started and there's a spreadsheet which we enter our weight on?

JiminnyCricket · 21/05/2017 09:41

So as we're about to start the next bootcamp, I thought I'd post my before and after. Brace yourselves, images of a fat person in undercrackers attached Blush

Results from the first 10 weeks of bootcamp:

18st 5lbs down to 16st 11lbs.

Onwards and downwards Grin

Still a loooong way to go but there's definately movement.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 21/05/2017 09:49

Hi there,

New to bootcanp but I would like to join you tomorrow - I will sign up on the joining page.

I've done variations on this before - I did Whole 30 when I was doing Crossfit - and I've just done 5 days of Dukan attack and knocked off 6.5lbs. I was converted to the LCHF way when I tracked on MFP during Whole 30: I was probably eating more calories than on a normal "diet" and the weight dropped off!

Also, I know Dukan is not LCHF but I was looking for a strong kickstart as I have been faffing about for months. I had a few rough months and sought solace in booze, crisps and chocolate,,, I am looking forward to dialling down the protein and ramping up the fat!

tumpymummy · 21/05/2017 10:04

Would have loved to join you all but it is half term next week so we are going on holiday. I don't want to 'spoil' the holiday by watching whAt I eat and definitely want to drink. Beforehand I could make some adjustments to my diet but is there any point? Is following some of the rules beneficial or is it all or nothing?

Cherrypi · 21/05/2017 10:12

Cinnamon in yoghurt is nice.

feekerry · 21/05/2017 10:20

Go for it fallen
All here with you!!
On the fruit front discussion, well I fucking hate fruit. Really hate it. Not sure why. This is why I like this woe!!!

Asmoto · 21/05/2017 10:36

Another fruit-hater here Grin Love vegetables, though, especially spinach.

nekobus · 21/05/2017 10:46

Jiminny great pics, I can really see the difference! Especially around your middle and the top of your thighs.
Inspiring!!
How did you get on at the shops? Hope there were lots of bargains.

ScoobyDoosTinklyLaugh · 21/05/2017 10:52

Jiminny - sorry that moneys tight, its shit. In your situation I would not pay one of my bills on the 25th, only a small one like broadband or something. Cancel the direct debit, ring to say you won't be paying till the 1st then ring to pay on the 1st and re set up the direct debit.

Hopefully it was bargains galore at the shops so you won't have to though. Well done for your previous losses Flowers

Dumdedumdedum · 21/05/2017 10:55

Thanks, BIWI and StuntNun - I must admit to having been rather lax with the water and veggies recently, so must force myself to cook the broccoli which has been perishing in the back of the fridge for the last five days! Anything not to have to ingest the dreaded ground flax seed which I find completely inedible!

CaptainBraandPants · 21/05/2017 10:56

I'm another one who doesn't like fruit. It's a refreshing change to be told not to eat fruit after years of SW, WW, etc telling me to eat apples and bananas. I fucking hate apples and bananas. Grin

Jiminny How did the shop go? Fattier meat tends to be the cheaper cuts, so I hope that helped. Also, I commented on your photo on the other thread, but it's worth saying twice, well done. very inspirational.

notevenamum1 · 21/05/2017 10:58

Hi gals! Going to aldi later to do a big shop and meal prep in advance.

I am planning on having:

Breakfast
Eggs, smoked salmon and avocado

Lunch
Salmon, sweet potato and greens

Dinner
Chicken with loads of veg

I'm not really a snacker, I prefer to have 3 satisfying meals. How does this sound? Xx

Naschkatze · 21/05/2017 11:05

Does anyone else get headaches after eating eggs? Particularly seems to be worse when cooked with butter/cream (i.e. Omelettes or scrambled)
It's bothered me for as long as I can remember but I've still eaten them occasionally and never done anything about it.
I can see this might be a bit of problem when trying LCHF!!

JiminnyCricket · 21/05/2017 11:09

Just got back from Morrisons and my shop came to £17.87 Grin

DP gets fed at work which helps massively!

This week I have coconut cream for my morning coffee breakfasts (still avoiding dairy)

For lunches I have a mumsnet chicken that I'm going to cook off, then have the legs as 1 lunch and stretch the breasts to 4 lunches with a bag of salad. I have olive oil in the cupboard and I grabbed some chorizo to cook off and throw in with it.

So that's lunches sorted and the chicken was on a 3 for 10 deal with other meat so probably all in for breaskfast and lunches for a week at work we're looking at ~£6.

Also on the 3 for 10 I got cod fillets and beef kebabs. The kebabs are chunky and in a pack of 10. The way my appetite is, 2 with some salad and celeriac chips will do me fine, DP will have 3 so that pack is 2 meals for 2 of us. Going to cook the cod off in lemon butter sauce. Had lemons and butter in the fridge already.

Got 6 slices of belly pork on yellow label as well as a back of 4 chicken breasts. Belly pork was 94p and the chicken breasts were £1.20. straight in the freezer when i got home so no problem with them being yellow label! We'll have chicken Thai green curry tonight (lemon grass, garlic and ginger with coconut milk and bulked out with spinach) with cauli rice, chicken stir fry probably Wednesday then belly pork with asparagus, crispy kale later in the week.

I also had some beef shin chunks in the freezer so I'll slow cook that and have it with swede mash.

Along with the meat I bought standard butt ton of veg:

Mushroom stir fry pack
Big box of asparagus
Bag of spinach
Bag of kale
Mushrooms for bulking out
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Celeriac
Swede

I didn't buy any of the veggies full price, some were wonky veg and others were in the marked down bit. Probably spent £7 total on veggies.

LCHF for 2 people for £18 Grin if DP needed to eat at home we could stretch to £20 for more salad and some lunch meat for him Wink

CaptainBraandPants · 21/05/2017 11:15

noteven Sounds good, apart from the sweet potato. It's too carby for BC - the clue is in the name. Grin
Jiminny Well done, the bargain hunter medal goes to you.

Asmoto · 21/05/2017 11:19

Jiminny I'm inspired by how much your tum has shrunk in 10 weeks. Hoping mine will do the same!

BIWI · 21/05/2017 11:32

@notevenamum1

Breakfast
Eggs, smoked salmon and avocado
Perfect low carb food

Lunch
Salmon, sweet potato and greens
Not so perfect - sweet potato is way too carby! Have a look at the veg carb counter on the spreadsheet for veg that's lower in carbs

Dinner
Chicken with loads of veg
^Again, perfect - although obviously depends on the veg you choose!
Make sure that with this meal, as with all your others, that you're using plenty of fat in them. Don't grill your chicken, but fry it - and eat the skin. Put butter on your veg, and an oily dressing on any salads^

I'm not really a snacker, I prefer to have 3 satisfying meals.
^This is much better for you anyway, so bodes well!

Good luck
Flowers

Been shopping.
Lunch. Avocado, HB eggs, Brie, tomato, cucumber.
Can I eat too much cheese?

Dinner will be stir fry. Oak choi, courgette, broccoli, tofu.

Yes? No?

BIWI · 21/05/2017 11:37

Looks pretty good to me, Moist!

You have to be careful with dairy - some people find that it impedes their weight loss.

But the only way you'll find out is by trial and error.

MOIST · 21/05/2017 11:39

Jimminy. Both the shopping and the tummy are impressive. And inspiring.

MOIST · 21/05/2017 11:40

I am addicted to cheese. It's worse than crack.

I need snack ideas. I like snacks.

dementedma · 21/05/2017 11:49

I know this works as have joined it before.....and fallen off spectacularly every time!!! So won't register but will lurk and try and lose at least something. Good luck all

feekerry · 21/05/2017 12:13

moist olives?
