Preparing for the pre-summer Low Carb Bootcamp - starting next week!

BIWI · 16/05/2017 08:59

Morning all!

So next week sees the start of our next Bootcamp. It will last, as usual, for 10 weeks, so will take us nicely up to the summer/school holidays.

If you're going to join us, and especially if you haven't low carbed before, it's really important that you plan for it, and start to think about what you're going to shop for, cook and eat. Failing to plan ahead is one of the key reasons why most people drop out early on!

The first two weeks of Bootcamp are the strictest, but after this period, things relax a little. The idea of the initial strict phase is to ensure that you switch your body from burning carbs, to burning fat.

Overall, these are the foods that you won't be eating at all during Bootcamp:

bread in any form
pasta/noodles
rice
potatoes
sugar (which includes honey/agave syrup/maple syrup)
chocolate
flour

During the stricter first two weeks, you also exclude:

fruit
nuts
alcohol

The idea of Bootcamp is that it's easy to follow - in that there is no weighing or counting of anything (unless you want to). Just follow the rules and you will be fine. However, although it's easy to follow, it's not always easy to do, because for many of us it can be such a change in eating habits and patterns.

The British diet has changed considerably in the last 50 years or so - whereas we used to be meat and two veg, plus potatoes - now, many if not most of our meals are based around carbs - pasta and sauce, or rice-based dishes, for example. And this has been compounded by government advice, which says we should base our diets on carbohydrates and avoid fat wherever we can.

When you're low carbing, you'll be reversing that, which feels very alien! So instead of a diet which is carbs:protein:fat, you'll be switching it round to fat:protein:carbs.

In the first few days of low carbing, especially if you've been eating a high carb diet for a long time, you may start to feel pretty rubbish

This is called carb flu - essentially you're withdrawing from sugar, which is a highly addictive substance. Your body treats carbs in the same way as it does sugar, and you may find it quite hard going to lose the sugar from your diet.

However, it generally passes quickly and once you're through it - if you suffer; not everyone does - you'll find that you feel great and full of energy. If you do suffer, up your salt intake (as we drink a lot of water, it's important that we keep our sodium intake higher) and also your fat. Take some paracetamol if you feel headachey, and just remind yourself that it's a good thing!

*Planning your meals is a really good idea. Have a look at the top of the Bootcamp topic, and you'll find a Bootcamp recipe thread - loads of lovely recipes there to inspire you. As far as possible, try and choose meals that you can make for the whole family, so you're not having to prepare different meals. It won't harm anyone to eat a low carb meal, and you're a lot more likely to stick to it if it's easy for you to do! Think about the meals that you like that aren't so carb-heavy, and make those - so if spaghetti bolognese and chilli with rice would normally feature, swap those for meals that you can easily make low carb - e.g. salmon with salad and green veg, or roast chicken with roast veg (just not roast potatoes!). Shepherds pie can be made with a mash made from celeriac, or cauliflower, or swede.

Think about what you're going to eat during the day; on-the-go eating is really tough for low carbers, because most food outlets are based on carbs - sandwiches, burgers, muffins, etc.

Make sure you've read and understand Bootcamp rules! I'll post these separately. Print them out if it helps!

Each week, I'll start a new chat thread, and I'll post a link to the spreadsheet that we use to track our weight. (You don't have to be added to the spreadsheet if you don't want to).

On the spreadsheet, on the tabs at the bottom, are links to lots of important information, and you'll find the Bootcamp rules there. There are also links to lots of articles, blogs and videos about low carbing, which will help to inspire and inform you.

It's really important that you understand the thinking and science behind low carbing, so do as much reading as you can. It's especially important that you're armed with some key facts about it, because even though low carbing is becoming more common, you'll still find that people around you will rubbish it - mostly people can't understand why you're eating so much fat and expecting to lose weight!

Anyway, that's enough for now!

Please don't plan to snack! You honestly, genuinely will not feel hungry between meals, once your body has adapted to burning fat rather than carbs. Snacking is a habit, but you really won't need to do it on a regular basis.

What are the best super quick breakfast ideas out there? At the moment I have to leave the house at 5:45 to make my train, so I tend to skip breakfast. I could make something the night before to take on the train but I'm feeling fairly unimaginative today so was curious if anyone else had any great suggestions!

BIWI · 21/05/2017 12:32

Hard boiled eggs? Can do them the night before. Ditto (low carb) sausages.

would egg mayo in avocado work? I like the idea of HB eggs but the reality makes me a bit boaky. Fine with them in stuff if you get me. Roll on the end of this hideous commute and I can have a tasty omelette in the mornings!

Oh I am so glad to see that BIWI is still a saint Halo and running her bootcamps. I was wondering when I returned to MN after a break.

I did bootcamp a while ago and whilst have totally fallen into carby twatery the last year or so I still have some better habits as a result just the fecking chocolate habit bite me in the ass again I need some additional motivation to get back on track. So jumping on board. Thankfully some newly acquired food allergies should help me stay on track once I can get there. It is just getting there and getting over my vegetable avoidance again tbf it would be easier if veg tasted like they used to when I was a child and not like bitter watery flavourless meh. Yes I was spoilt with homegrown old variety veg and I am getting to be considered old by some Monday should be easy to start tbh I could probably start today as only eaten breakfast and at 2 sausages it was not entirely out of line for bootcamp if I can manage to sort the rest of the day out suitably. just need to lay off the coffee Actually looking forwards to this.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 21/05/2017 12:57

I have a question about MFP. I know that we are not supposed to be tracking calories etc but I have used MFP for activity tracking for activity pacing reasons in the past and tbh i liked that it allowed you to track things like ironing as activity Blush However, when i took an extended break from mn i also took a break from mfp and as I have no idea which email i used to create the account as I used it in the era when you had a user name to log in.

So the question is, can you still track the activity really well, and is it worth setting up a new account or would you advise something else. Also if i enter my food can I still play the how much can i upset the food recorder by having the wrong proportions thing or have the caught up to the low carb thing yet?

Getting moving for me is key to slowing the picky/snacky food habit. HmmBlush And I lack motivation so hopefully seeing the effort will help with that and put me in the best place for success and sticking to bootcamp.

wombattoo · 21/05/2017 12:57

tumpty This way of eating can be rather unforgiving. I would suggest that it's all or nothing. Especially the first 2 weeks. Why not enjoy your holiday and jump in the week after?
Hello everyone Smile

wombattoo · 21/05/2017 12:59

Daphne I take hard boiled eggs to work. Sometimes I make them into egg mayo. I also like small strips of belly pork which I eat cold with a mayo dip, or smoked salmon.

wombattoo · 21/05/2017 13:22

Can I just ask everyone to make sure they are on the sign up list. Sayrra will be doing the spreadsheet today. If you cannot copy and paste the list, just post adding your name and I will do the list later.
Good luck

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 21/05/2017 13:37

Sorry Wombattoo. Blush

No problem Yes Smile

Be careful not to cut others off the list. It is up to date now.

HemanOrSheRa · 21/05/2017 14:26

I'm in! I did BC a couple of years ago with good results. My body shape changed dramatically. Then my Dad died last January and I have piled on weight Sad. Stones and stones. I am so fat that I'm finding it difficult to imagine ever losing it. This BC is timely as it will take me up to a fortnight before our summer holiday.

I've tried the BSD a couple of times, I started it again on Friday to lose weight for summer. But I am so very, very hungry and I get completely obsessed with calories, meals and weighing myself. I guess one positive is I have reduced my carb intake over the last couple of days and I've massively upped my water intake.

I won't be weighing myself. I get myself in a real pickle over it so I'll take photos front and side view (gulp) so I can see my progress.

DP will be VERY pleased - crispy pork belly will be back on the menu Grin.

L238 · 21/05/2017 14:55

Excited to start tomorrow. Just done a big Lidl shop. Partner is away for next 10 days so that'll be easier in terms of cooking. Haven't weighed myself in a while though so not really looking forward to that tomorrow morning Hmm quite keen to focus more on measurements but want to have a baseline weight even if I don't weigh in that often during BC

Yorkshirebornandbred · 21/05/2017 14:57

I think I may struggle with weighing too...i get very obsessed with it.

HemanOrSheRa · 21/05/2017 15:38

Bloody hell Jiminny your before and after photos are amazing. The difference around your tummy, back and upper arms is remarkable. You have very good legs anyway Smile.

ASDismynormality · 21/05/2017 15:48

BIWI. I suspect it's mainly down to PMT. hopefully will feel better tomorrow. Had planned to go out for the day tomorrow to try to pick myself up but DD , who is doing her GCSES, has got a tummy bug so need to do school run.

Veryflummoxed · 21/05/2017 15:53

Only just noticed this thread to day, so glad I haven't missed the start. Thanks BIWI for being here for us all again and also SayrraT and Wombattoo for the spread sheet.
I dropped off the thread before last bootcamp finished. We had a bereavement and I didn't cope well. I haven't been near a set of scales for weeks but this is just what I need to set me back on track.

My tip is cook extra so that there are leftovers for breakfast/lunch.

HemanOrSheRa · 21/05/2017 16:06

Daphne could you make some egg muffins for breakfast? There are loads of recipes on line. I will make this www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/679639/quiche-lorraine-frittata. I'll half the recipe, leave out the milk and using a splosh of cream instead. It's also good for lunch and a snack too. I'll make it in a large tin so I can cut it into portions but there is no reason why you couldn't bake it in a muffin tin.

dustmotesinthesun · 21/05/2017 16:39

Just caught up with the thread.

Blimey Jiminny you bargain hunter. Is Morrisons good then? I badly need to cut my food bill. My rent goes up soon and will be making me feel a bit poor. Do you know what time yellow stickers go on? The more i can get that's yellow stickered, the better. I find it hard to spend below £40 a week on food and it often hits £50 and that's just for me.

In terms if advice can i just add one more thing generally.....this can bring stuff up. There are weeks when you get grumpy or emotional or it just feels hard (most of the time it really isn't hard i promise).

So keep coming here and posting but someone will always provide a listening ear.

Oh and on a separate issue I get really funny about fruit. There's times i can cut it no problem. There's also times when it does something funny to me nt eating it and i end up binging. I just feel too deprived. I find life pretty intolerable day to day anyway because of chronic illness and I don't know if the fruit thing just makes it too difficult. It puts me in an awful grump. I literally feel I can't cope in some regard Blush

Not sure what you'd all recommend. Keep persevering and tackle it. Or be a bit kind to myself and just keep eating fruit. I could try not eating it every other day I guess.

Giraffeski · 21/05/2017 16:56

I'm a bit worried as we are going away with extended family for a week starting Saturday, but luckily we are in a holiday cottage and not really eating out. I've put myself in charge of meals and I've done a spreadsheet detailing meals and variations required (spot the Aspie!) so food should be ok. It will be hard as everyone will be snacking and drinking a fair bit. I may give in to the odd glass of prosecco and if so I'm not going to beat myself up about it. my husband knows about the LCHF and so does my sister, but I'm not mentioning it to my mum as she will make a big deal of it and try to catch me out.
So I'm going to try for nobody really noticing.

JiminnyCricket · 21/05/2017 17:23

dust Morrisons is a way of life Grin

It's cheap and cheerful but there's always good offers on and there's yellow label stuff out all the time. Also a really good range which is why I prefer it to Aldi or Lidl.

JiminnyCricket · 21/05/2017 17:25

giraffe olives and cheese are great snacks and not noticeable if you're eating those and not the more carbs things on offer!

I have a similar problem with my mum, she thinks low carb will kill me Hmm best way I've found to deal with it is to shut down diet conversations with 'fish isn't talking about diets boring?? Let's talk about something else' Wink

JiminnyCricket · 21/05/2017 17:26

Gosh not fish lol

StuntNun · 21/05/2017 17:44

I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's weigh in. DH has been doing most of the cooking lately and tends to bugger things up by serving sweet potato fries or putting agave nectar in things. Hmm One memorable roast dinner all I could have was chicken and steamed broccoli, he didn't even make gravy an unforgivable crime in my book. I'm still within the normal BMI but having lost weight twice (once initially and once after my last pregnancy) I don't want to have to do it again. DH is away for the next ten days so hopefully I'll be safe food-wise! Tonight is roast chicken, gravy, and steamed asparagus and broccoli with melted salt crystal butter poured over. Low carb heaven!
