Week 1 - Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - Are you ready?!

BIWI · 11/10/2015 22:44

Evening all!

I'm starting the chat thread a little early, because I have to be at work at sparrow's fart tomorrow.

So here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, created and curated by the very lovely SayrraT

You don't have to add your weight - but you can also be on the spreadsheet without entering your actual weight. If you want, you can index it - which means that you start at 100. For every pound that you lose, lose a point. So if you lose 4lbs in week one, then you'll start week 2 at 96.

Have a good look at the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet, as there is all sorts of really important information there - not least of which is Bootcamp rules.

If you haven't done Bootcamp before, I'd suggest that you print off the rules and stick them somewhere that you'll see them regularly. In addition, I'd also suggest that you print off the list of vegetables and their carb counts.

If you have any particular questions, the questions thread is here - it's often the case that the chat thread moves so quickly in the early weeks that questions can easily get missed.

And don't forget the recipe thread! There are loads of lovely recipes on here - the thread is almost full, but there's still room for any more low carb recipes you might want to add.

Above all, good luck to you all. Bootcamp is designed to be simple and straightforward, but it isn't easy. If you have any problems, or think things aren't working, please come and chat about it here.

I'm very envious of these weight losses. I have no idea as I don't want to weigh and become obsessed but my personal trainer has suggested I stand on the super-duper scales at my training session each week, she will record the weight, fat %ge, etc and will advise me if I need to eat more protein or whatever then will just tell me the totals at the end of bootcamp. I'm quite pleased with that as it will avoid the obsession but still keep me on the straight and narrow

BIWI · 18/10/2015 00:59

That sounds good, but is she supportive of low carbing? Low carbing isn't just high protein, it's high fat. So it should be fat, then protein and then carbs.

Oh my god I ate a whole ball of mozzarella last night and it was so good. I roasted aubergine slices with pepperoni on top then used them as 'bread' to make mozarella, basil and tomato stacks.

I'm using my fitness pal to keep an eye on my macros, as I know the percentages that really work for me. I've noticed that since starting bootcamp I'm eating far less calories, it really does stop you being so hungry and only having a few pounds to lose this helps shift them as I get closer to my goal weight.

lavenderhoney · 18/10/2015 06:38

Yesterday I had

B- couple of sausages
l- omelette- 2 eggs and a bit of cheese
D- pork shoulder with cabbage

I also drank lots of water and made it to the gym:) I'm cutting down on coffee and I feel a bit rubbish -glad it's Sunday.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/10/2015 06:54

Signing in a week late. It's entirely my own fault - it was DS2's birthday last weekend and there was Cake (he is only 3) - so my chances of actually sticking to LC Bootcamp were nil while cake was in the house.
It's all gone now - ready to go tomorrow morning - revved up and ready for it!

Will sign in with weight in the morning.

Hope your first week has gone well, losers - I hope to be fully immersed in this WOE again this time around, and since it's got so fecking hot so early in the season, that should help.

Huntthepigsear · 18/10/2015 07:34

Well, yesterday was my first struggle day.
Started well with a fry up of bacon eggs and mushrooms. Trouble was, I was still really full by lunchtime so didn't have my planned lunch. I couldn't defer lunch as I was taking DS3 swimming. So, being a good girl, I made sure I had something. But it was only some FF yoghurt.
Then, my about 4.30, I was really hungry. Had a slice of cheese and otherwise held off until dinner an hour later, but by then my hunger was a 9, rather than a 7/8. Had pork chops with lots of lovely veg, including asparagus and cabbage in butter.
In the evening, I was hungry. Bit like I used to get on a calorie controlled diet and the reason I would often fail Had more yoghurt and felt okish, but went to bed hungrier than I would have liked.
I've woken up fine today, thirsty but no more hungry than usual.
It made me realise how I've gotten used to not feeling hungry and how much I like it!
So, moral of the story, for me, is to make sure I have 3 good meals. I might need to reduce the size of any fry up, though. I did only have 2 eggs and 2 rashers of bacon with a few mushrooms, so not that excessive.
Today's plan is:
B - scrambled eggs and smoked salmon
L - frittata I was supposed to have yesterday
D - roast chicken dinner without the roasties and stuffing Sad

Sorry for the essay, just needed to get it out there.
Well done on all these loses, very impressive. I'm looking forward to the weigh in tomorrow. I wore trousers on Friday that were too tight two weeks ago, so have lost inches even if not pounds. I'm aiming for 1lb per week, but hoping for a bit more first week, so I've got some spare when if I stall later.

StoneFoxMama · 18/10/2015 08:03

hunt when we get to bc lite I make stuffing with lc sausage meat, fresh sage, ground almonds, egg and a dash of cream. It's delicious.

StoneFoxMama · 18/10/2015 08:04

Oh and shallots and bacon too!

Huntthepigsear · 18/10/2015 08:07

stone that stuffing sounds delicious. Roll on BC lite. Grin

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 18/10/2015 08:41

Quick question ... Can i use a swede to make some form of roasties or rostie type thing? We are having roast beef and all the trimmings.

Many thanks

SayrraT · 18/10/2015 09:20

Thanks everyone Grin well I weighed again today and it still says the same so must be true!!

billionaire sorry, I did try to say BClite only every time I mentioned it but must have missed it in a post Smile

Coyo and coconut milk/cream are fine because they are LC and HF (3.4g carbs and 15g fat per 100ml for milk, 0.5 g carbs and 19g fat for coyo and 3g carbs and 22g fat per 100ml for cream) but actual coconut is 6.1g carbs and 62g fat per 100g so a bit high on the carbs for BC not to mention the ground almonds (6.5g carbs and 58g fat per 100g) in the porridge.

I think I worked out that my porridge is about 5.4g per portion so its only for special occasions Grin

desperately I've never used swede to make anything like that bit you could give it a go? I did find this roasted swede with parmesan which look nice.

StuntNun · 18/10/2015 10:13

I've been out of action this week so just catching up with the thread now.

BestisWest the M&S 95% sausages are nice fried, if you grill them then they aren't great.

Sheba it's magnesium that's linked to leg cramps. You can get a supplement or some sea salts have magnesium or you could try mineral water. Brazil nuts are high in magnesium iirc.

Tootyfilou there is a coconut yoghurt recipe on the recipe thread that is suitable for Bootcamp.

CalmYoBadSelf no need to snack if you don't feel hungry. Be guided by how you feel.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/10/2015 10:25

desperately - I've used swede to make rosti, very nice too. It shrinks a LOT though.

Even though I haven't started properly yet, tonight's dinner was so nice I wanted to share it:
Roast turkey breast fillets with herby cheesy crust - no crumb, I just whizzed Boursin, parmesan and fresh coriander together, seasoned with sage, basil and salt, and clumped it over the turkey breasts, then cooked them in a medium hot oven for about 40 minutes. Truly delicious!

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 18/10/2015 10:33

Thanks guys, i am trying swede wedges roasted in beef fat - just concerned they might go all mushy like sweet potato (not that i eat it on BC!!)
I am doing normal roasties for the non lc-ers.

I will have to try swede rosti.

I know Mr Porky pork scratchings are full of rubbish but they are on offer in Lidl at the moment 5 bags for 99p. They are my emergency food for when there are no other options and i am out and about. Nicer than i remembered as well.

fluffywol · 18/10/2015 12:06

First week of BC has been a big fail for me. Started with a migraine on Monday then Tuesday I got a biliary attack (caused by gallstones) which lasted till Friday. Thursday was TOTM, which has been exceptionally heavy.

I've had no appetite at all this week either, so been picking a lot, though I was eating at my usual mealtimes. I'm not too worried though, what with already losing quite a lot already, and the previous two weeks I lost 3lb each time, which I feel is a little to much any way.

BIWI · 18/10/2015 12:10

Huntthepigsear - if you're hungry:

  • eat! As long as it's low carb of course ... but missing lunch isn't great especially in the first couple of weeks of Bootcamp while you're adjusting to low carbing
  • are you eating enough fat?
  • are you drinking enough water?

fluffy sounds like you've had a pretty grim week!

Huntthepigsear · 18/10/2015 12:15

BIWI I did eat lunch, just not very much. I agree that I need to make sure I eat a good lunch, I usually do.
Eating lots of fat - after having a frying pan that never saw the light of day, it's being used on at least a daily basis, plus butter in veg, olive oil/ white wine vinaigrette, FF mayonnaise, etc.
I'm drinking about 3L per day, no less than 2.7 and often a bit more.
I will consider myself suitably told off. Grin

BIWI · 18/10/2015 12:30

Not told off!!! Just asking questions ... Grin

Hi! I've just signed up; hopefully I have added my name and weight correctly. Spreadsheets were never my strong point!

I have about a stone to lose, though I would be happy with a few pounds for starters, just to get myself back to a healthy BMI (I have been overweight since I had a baby last Christmas). I have been LCing since last Thursday (I think), though I am only signing up to BC now. It's been ok so far, though I have been getting lots of cravings for bread and cake etc and a few nasty headaches. I hadn't noticed before I started LCing, but I think I must be a true carb addict as this WOE has felt like a drastic change for me. I weighed myself this morning and am already a bit lighter though so it does seem to be having some effect. Woo!

SayrraT · 18/10/2015 13:32

Yep standing that's you added to the spreadsheet though I've not alphabetised it so you are not at the bottom anymore Smile

Just a note to say that i won't be around tomorrow morning (I've got my PhD viva!!) so if anything goes wrong with the spreadsheet I will sort it on Tuesday.

standinginthedoorway · 18/10/2015 13:49

Hahaha oooops! Thanks a million Sayrra and best of luck tomorrow.

Hyggeligt · 18/10/2015 13:56

Hello
My week was going really well food wise-by Friday I was down 5lbs Grin
However, I have totally & ashamed lay fallen off the wagon since Friday evening& done exactly what I was hoping to teach myself not to do and have not stopped emotionally eating Sad . I have sinusitis, had a foul day at work and my exh chose to bombard me with a load of unpleasantness that knocked me sideways....no excuses, I know.....and it carried on most of the weekend .
I have a feeling my weight will be as it was (or higher) tomorrow.
May I record my weight & restart tomorrow, doing another 2 weeks of the bootcamp rules?
Feeling a bit mortified; any suggestions or tactics that would help me avoid repeating this would be most gratefully received.
Hope everyone's having a good day.

SayrraT · 18/10/2015 14:23

Hyggeligt you can do BC for as long as you like. SOme people stay on BC for the whole 10 weeks, others do BC for the week and BClite at the weekend. I usually aim to do BC all the time (not just the 10 weeks) and BClite on special occasions.

I'm sorry that you've had a tough week Flowers Stopping emotional eating is a hard one and you can't expect to get over it in one go.

Would it help if you came on here when you are feeling emotional and talked to us about it, then we can help to support you in not turning to food.

Try to think about how you feel after you've fallen off the wagon because you've had a bad day/week. Do you feel better? I bet you didn't, I can see that from your post. So you should try to think about that before you reach for the chocolate/biscuits/cake/crisps/wine/whatever (easier said than done I know) also eating didn't change anything, you'd still had a tough week.

Can you think of anything else that you can use to comfort yourself which doesn't include eating? What about a nice hot bath with a good book, painting your nails, chatting with a friend? Or have some LC treats, a spoonful of double cream and some berries (BClite but 100x better than carby foods) can feel really luxurious.

Part of every BC is always dealing with different triggers for different people and we are all different so what works for me might not work for you but most people find that being able to come on here and chat about it can help. You'll always find that, no matter what you think, someone else has always been there.

Just put this weekend behind you, start again and try to prepare yourself with strategies you can try next time you feel this way Flowers

BIWI · 18/10/2015 15:31

Really, really good luck for tomorrow Sayrra Flowers
