Week 1 - Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - Are you ready?!

BIWI · 11/10/2015 22:44

Evening all!

I'm starting the chat thread a little early, because I have to be at work at sparrow's fart tomorrow.

So here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness, created and curated by the very lovely SayrraT

You don't have to add your weight - but you can also be on the spreadsheet without entering your actual weight. If you want, you can index it - which means that you start at 100. For every pound that you lose, lose a point. So if you lose 4lbs in week one, then you'll start week 2 at 96.

Have a good look at the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet, as there is all sorts of really important information there - not least of which is Bootcamp rules.

If you haven't done Bootcamp before, I'd suggest that you print off the rules and stick them somewhere that you'll see them regularly. In addition, I'd also suggest that you print off the list of vegetables and their carb counts.

If you have any particular questions, the questions thread is here - it's often the case that the chat thread moves so quickly in the early weeks that questions can easily get missed.

And don't forget the recipe thread! There are loads of lovely recipes on here - the thread is almost full, but there's still room for any more low carb recipes you might want to add.

Above all, good luck to you all. Bootcamp is designed to be simple and straightforward, but it isn't easy. If you have any problems, or think things aren't working, please come and chat about it here.

beccus I got the inspiration for the soup/chowder here but left out the garlic, parsnips, yeast and old bay seasoning. I added swede as had some to use up but perhaps won't next time as took the longest to cook.

I added cream, cream cheese and parmesan to up the fat a bit and also included prosciutto in the topping as had some open but it does not need it, the roasted cabbage was lovely and yes blended half and left half chunky.

I am used to making soups with vibrant colours (pea, carrot, squash etc) so this looked bland in comparison but tasted anything but, the lemon and the mustard were brilliant in bringing out the flavours.

Going to try broccoli and cheese soup next I think

Huntthepigsear · 17/10/2015 09:11

Well, there is a problem with this WOE.
When I used to have porridge for breakfast, I could just get on and eat it.
Fried egg, bacon and mushrooms? First DS2, then DS1 wanted some. At least DS3 didn't and DH was out walking the dog.
Then they wanted baked beans...then toast.
Ah, well. At least we are all full and have a good breakfast. Grin
Got left over frittata for lunch and pork chops and veg for dinner.
Will be a couple of coffees with cream in there, too.
Am going to try another run later as well.

regenerationfez · 17/10/2015 09:15

I'm writing my shopping list for the week and am looking through the recipe thread for inspiration. Any dinner recommendations for me to try?

I might buy some pork scratchings. The thought of them usually put me off, but they might be nice if I fancy some crunch.

Huntthepigsear · 17/10/2015 09:25

I don't like pork scratching, so that's never going to be on my shopping list. Grin Actually, DH likes them, so might get them to persuade him to stay on track.
I'm adding several cauliflowers to my list - really like cauli rice and mashed cauli, with butter and cream was just heavenly.
Ive really enjoyed salmon with roasted veg and hm tartare sauce. I'm going to do cod in brown butter this week - it's a Jamie recipe where you fry the fish, then leave it to one side and melt some butter, add capers and when it turns brown, add a splash of lemon juice and parsley. I usually add some prawns.

BIWI · 17/10/2015 09:36

You could always make your own pork scratchings - Morrisons sell pork rind that you can roast to make crackling - which is what pork scratchings are! Or roast a lovely joint of pork so you get the crackling that way

There's quite a bit of cheating going on, I notice!

Nuts, chocolate, sweeteners or alcohol are not allowed on Bootcamp!

CalmYoBadSelf · 17/10/2015 10:03

Home Bargains sell something called Pork Crunch which is just pork and salt but is like a puffed crispy thing without the hardness of pork scratchings. I have a jaw problem so can't manage things that are too crunchy but those are more like the texture of other snacky things

regenerationfez · 17/10/2015 10:20

I have salmon steaks on my list but I might try that cod thing. It sounds heavenly! I've had cauliflower rice, but I might try cauliflower cheese or cauli mash with it Smile

I'm not sure if there is a Home bargains near me. Ill look on the net. is it like 99p store? I might have a look around there.

I sneaked a quick weigh and have lost 3lb, so vv happy! Should motivate me through the weekend to next weigh in!

SayrraT · 17/10/2015 10:44

I had the most amazing cauli cheese for lunch the other day, I love this WOE.

If anyone is making cauliflower cheese then the best way I've found to make the sauce is to heat double cream add plenty grated cheese and also a bit of mozzarella, this helps the sauce thicken.

I love the pork crunch pork scratchings because I hate the soggy bit you get with some other pork scratchings. We are off to Costco today so I'm going to see if I can find a big box of scratchings there.

Weighed in again this morning! I'm 6 lbs down!!!! Grin (I've got a lot to lose so 6 lbs is ~2.5% of my weight so don't everyone expect huge losses).

Balonder · 17/10/2015 11:05

Wow. Well done Sayrra, that is very impressive!

SayrraT · 17/10/2015 11:14

Well, I'm quite surprised TBH. Especially since I've been LCing for a while (though I totally fell off the wagon) and you don't normally get a big loss if you have LCed before.

Palomb · 17/10/2015 11:16

I've been making cheese sauce with creme fraiche and Parmesan or similar. very tasty.

BIWI · 17/10/2015 13:15

Well done Sayrra!!!

regenerationfez · 17/10/2015 14:07

Well done Sayrra!! I'll try that cauliflower cheese recipe and hope some of it rubs off on me Grin

Billionnairewannabe · 17/10/2015 14:37

Well done Sayrra! Just had your coconut porridge for lunch - it's to die for! Am def going to be trying your cauli cheese. I love this WOE too after only 5 days!

SayrraT · 17/10/2015 15:07

billionaire the coconut porridge is delicious but it is really a BClite breakfast because of the nuts which we are not allowed on BC.

Don't have it too much in the beginning. The cauli cheese is deliciousness Grin

I'm having the leftover with duck breast tonight for dinner.

regenerationfez · 17/10/2015 15:52

What do you do if you are sick of cooking and fancy a takeaway?

ShebaQueen · 17/10/2015 15:55

Congrats Sayrra, that's really impressive! I have been avoiding the scales as I tend to get a bit obsessed, but will weigh on Monday. Things are definitely moving in the right direction though, tried on some trousers in town today and the 16 was slightly loose as opposed to "snug" which they were a couple of weeks ago, yay! I dream of getting back into a size 12 for the first time in about 20 years, that's my motivation, although sizes do seem to vary widely from one shop to another.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

BIWI · 17/10/2015 17:52

What kind of takeaway do you fancy, regeneration? Chinese/Thai are really difficult, especially during the first two weeks of Bootcamp, but Indian is doable. Stick to dry dishes, so chicken/lamb/prawn/meat tandoori/tikka (not tikka masala), and go for a cauliflower, spinach or mushroom bhaji - the side dish, not something mixed with flour and fried!

And, obviously, no rice, naan, poppadom, chapati, roti ...

ChesterDrawers · 17/10/2015 18:11

Swedes are on special off in Aldi this week, 39p each, if anyone's interested? I love the stuff so have stocked up.

Got a horrible cold. Is there anything I can take to help?

regenerationfez · 17/10/2015 19:18

I've had a disaaaaster Biwi! I suggested Indian and was outvoted for Chinese, so ordered duck, which I had wrapped in lettuce with no sauce, but I also ordered chop suey and chicken wings. The chop suey was in a sauce so sweet even my DH said it was like it had been stuck in a sugar syrup. That was inedible so didn't eat that, and the chicken wings, which were described as 'dry' came in breadcrumbs! I ended up picking king prawns and veg out of the prawns and cashew nuts and just eating the chicken wings because I was hungry!

The rest of the day went really well too. I had eggs and bacon for breakfast with coffee and cream, leftover chicken with Mayo and lettuce for lunch. I even went to a kids party and only nibbled on cherry tomatoes and cucumber sticks!

BestIsWest · 17/10/2015 19:33

Just made a curry with chicken, cauli, coconut cream etc. It was delicious but DH had peshwari naan with his which smelled incredible. It was a real struggle not to have some myself.

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 17/10/2015 20:10

Lowering the tone but when i fancy a takeaway i have a kebab - our local takeaway do doner meat and 2 chicken skewers on a nan bread with a nice bit of salad and garlic yoghurt. Hubby and i split this and he eats the nan. Yummy and loads of fat

If i have indian i have tandoori chicken, chicken jalfrezi and sag paneer and / or cauliflower bahji (sp). I pick the chicken out of the sauce and make cauli rice to go with it.

I dont have chinese as a takeaway but if i do i have chicken and mushroom soup. If i have thai food i have tom yum soup or a chicken and coconut soup.

I was very busy today but i coped without food ( not ideal i know), i even managed to sit in Mc donalds with the kids whilst they ate chips and not pinch one - feeling very proud.

I still havent found my scales ( moved house recently) but jeans slipping down and tummy much flatter.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 17/10/2015 21:22

Wow at losing 6lbs already, Sayrra! That's amazing!

Today I seem to have eaten a lot.
B: 2 eggs fried in butter, uber-camp coleslaw
L: Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon & pickled herring, bacon and mushrooms
S: 1 kabanos sausage, 1 BabyBel, 1 packet pork scratchings
D: Roast chicken skins, roast chicken thighs, homemade tzatziki

I've had 3 cups of tea with milk, 2.25l of water (I'll have another 750ml before I go to bed) and 2 coffees with cream.

I've lost 3lbs!

Palomb · 17/10/2015 21:38

Was very strong earlier on. I managed to resist mashed potato and dumplings despite dishing them up for everyone else!

Congratulations for all the losses :)

Billionnairewannabe · 17/10/2015 22:15

Day 6 complete (with 2nd faux pas Sad)

Sorry Sayrra I did wonder about the nut aspect but just thought as it was on here it was ok Blush anyway didn't have much as I appear to have no appetite!?! It was the only thing I could force myself to eat?! Grin is Coyo BC or lite as just bought some?

B soft boiled egg with bacon soldiers! Coffee with cream
L small portion of coconut porridge (not in the least hungry)
D bolognaise with courgette spaghetti

Water been a bit slower today but just on my last 500ml bottle of wine
