5 Week Low Carb Bootcamp, with added Ubercamp

BIWI · 21/07/2014 07:35

Morning all!

Just starting the day with a black coffee instead of my usual white one. Not quite sure if I like it or not ...

Anyway, welcome, everyone to this shorter-and-stricter-than-usual Bootcamp Grin

For those of you who are new to low carbing, I strongly suggest that you don't do Ubercamp. It's very strict and restrictive and will be a very, very hard introduction to low carbing. Far better that you get to grips with what it's all about before you also aim to cut out dairy.

For those of you that have low carbed before, you have the option this time around. You can either Bootcamp, which will last for three weeks this time, followed by two weeks of Bootcamp Light, or you can Ubercamp for the first week.

Ubercamp means no dairy (apart from butter). So the rules are the same as for Bootcamp, with this one exception.

Bootcamp Rules

On our Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will find the rules of Bootcamp - along with a whole load of other really important information. Have a good look around it, by clicking on the tabs at the bottom.

Sayra will be updating the spreadsheet this morning, so she will get all your names on it, and when she does, you can then enter your starting weight. As the spreadsheet is shared, you may not wish to confess all

MNHQ are - hopefully! - also setting up another Weight Tracker for us.

As the spreadsheet is shared, you may not wish to confess all there, in which case use the Weight Tracker, as that is private.

So this is the plan this time around:

Week 1 - Ubercamp (for those who are up for the extra challenge
Weeks 2-3 - Bootcamp
Weeks 4-5 - Bootcamp Light

I should warn you that I have taken my big stick out of the cupboard and I am ready and willing to use it ...

Morning all still no weight loss for me..
B.tuna mayo & boiled egg
L.salmon mushroom 2 egg omelet
D.2 chicken fillets (low on shopping yesterday)
3+ lts water.

BIWI · 26/07/2014 08:45

perry - where is your veg?! You need to eat some veg - and you look like you're not eating enough fat as well. Both of these are really important.

BIWI years of being scared of fat has made me not know how to increase it ,can you advise? I am currently using coconut oil for all frying.
The veg I can increase myself.

BIWI · 26/07/2014 09:01

There is no reason to fear fat! A low carb diet should be a high fat one.

You should look to eat fattier cuts of meat - chicken fillets will be really lean, and tuna and salmon aren't going to give you a huge amount more fat.

Try eating roast chicken, with the skin on - or use chicken thighs instead of breast fillet. Belly pork and breast of lamb are fabulous.

Frying with coconut oil is great, and try adding a big salad to your meals, that you have dressed with a (home-made) oily dressing.

Here's a piece about fat/cholesterol that you might like to read

Here are a couple of paragraphs taken from that article:

"Moreover, studies on low-carbohydrate diets (which tend to be high in saturated fat) suggest that they not only don’t raise blood cholesterol, they have several beneficial impacts on cardiovascular disease risk markers. For example, a meta-analysis of 17 low-carb diet trials covering 1,140 obese patients published in the journal Obesity Reviews found that low-carb diets neither increased nor decreased LDL cholesterol. However, they did find that low-carb diets were associated with significant decreases is body weight as well as improvements in several CV risk factors, including decreases in triglycerides, fasting glucose, blood pressure, body mass index, abdominal circumference, plasma insulin and c-reactive protein, as well as an increase in HDL cholesterol. (7)"

"If you’re wondering whether saturated fat may contribute to heart disease in some way that isn’t related to cholesterol, a large meta-analysis of prospective studies involving close to 350,000 participants found no association between saturated fat and heart disease. (8) A Japanese prospective study that followed 58,000 men for an average of 14 years found no association between saturated fat intake and heart disease, and an inverse association between saturated fat and stroke (i.e. those who ate more saturated fat had a lower risk of stroke). (9)"

perry - also, make sure that you read the rules of Bootcamp! High fat is a key part of it. The rules are on the spreadsheet, which is linked to on the OP

thanks as always BIWI , I will take all of that on board, off shopping now so will chomp my way through fat today.(I love the taste of fat BTW) my DH cant even look at me eating it.

StuntNun · 26/07/2014 09:49

Perry fish is an easy way to add fat. Eat oily fish such as tuna, sardines, salmon, mackerel etc. and buy tinned fish in oil. Sardines in olive oil are delicious, I could eat them out of the tin like that. And when cooking fresh fish always add oil or butter. I make up a tinfoil parcel with lots of butter, seasoning and herbs and cook them in the oven. You can pour the cooking juices over broccoli or other veg to get more fat into your diet. Over time you will become accustomed to fat and start to enjoy it more. I eat chicken wings like Jack Sprat's wife now! The bones are picked clean of every morsel.

perrysands · 26/07/2014 10:42

I need a new butchers & veg shop...no chicken legs ,wings, thighs, or pork belly & couldn't tell me the meat content in the sausages ,no celeriac well this one I don't mind to much as I didn't know what it was myself before today. I will head into the town shortly and finish my shop.

Lovely lamb chops and butter cauliflower all made up and in the fridge waiting for later.

Thanks BIWI and stuntnun feeling more positive now that I can get on the right track.

Checking in after a week of challenges and successes. Main challenge being my lovely colleagues presenting me with a huge plate of buttered crumpets and a giant chocolate cake as a late birthday surprise!

Won't lie - I did have a slice of the cake. They were so pleased to have found out and surprised me. But I did say no to the crumpets, and a lot of other carby foods being passed around. My office seems to run on toast, biscuits, cakes and chocolate. Beginning to see where the spare tire has come from.

But I'm 4lbs down and just had eggs with spinach, yogurt and chilli butter for breakfast (ubercamp abandoned yesterday when I had a choice of Greek yogurt or toast for breakfast). Feel so much better eating this way.

Marshy · 26/07/2014 10:55

Morning all!

I have to admit that after a good day, I went quite considerably astray last night with a couple of glasses of wine and a takeaway although the takeaway was lowcarb chicken kebab and I had spinach and cheese with it, no rice or anything.

Scales still showing a loss for this week, though much less dramatic than last week (I started a bit early)

Back on track for these next two days. I'm off to a music festival later, so hopefully there will be something good to eat there.

Have a good Saturday everyone

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 26/07/2014 11:06

Checking in, have had a super long lie in thanks to DP (must be feeling sorry for my post insanity soreness!).

Don't know what to have for breakfast.

StuntNun · 26/07/2014 11:40

Eggs of course Schro Wink

StuntNun · 26/07/2014 11:42

Perry my butchers sells chicken fillets, lean mince, steak burgers, 80% meat sausages etc. It's completely hopeless for low carb high fat food.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 26/07/2014 12:01

I cannot bear to look at eggs just now!

Had some tuna mayo and red cabbage coleslaw and 2 teeny single serving cheeses. Having a BPC just now.

miffy49 · 26/07/2014 12:02

Everyone is so panicked by the idea of fat aren't they? Its rammed down your throat every day on TV and in the papers. Animals are even bred to be lean now so its a challenge trying to find fattier cuts. Doesn't help when most family butchers have been driven out by the supermarkets. We tend to nip down to our local wholesaler and buy a couple of whole pork bellies. We bone it out and cut it into suitable sized joints and bung them in the freezer. Its much cheaper than the little fiddly bits you get in the supermarkets. Belly is much nicer slow roasted in a piece than in those daft little slices that most shops sell. You get crackling too. Grin

If I'm stuck with plain fish or something like chicken breast I turn to the rich sauces or mayo based dips. If all else fails chuck some olive oil and lemon juice over your veg. It brightens up broccoli a treat!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 26/07/2014 12:03

And my butcher is rubbish as well. Everything has filler and/or sugar in it. I find Tesco butchers better, Christ McDonalds is better than the butcher here, it's disapointing.

perrysands · 26/07/2014 12:37

I think the butchers are gone to mmmm whats the word maybe fancy/poncy,marinated this marinated that, honestly I had to go to four different butchers to get plain chicken legs well good thing is my legs got a well and truly work out.
Shows how far over the other side we have gone and we don't even realised it, well I didn't..

miffy49 · 26/07/2014 13:37

I like to add my own flavourings and marinades. With being gluten intolerant its safer. Theres always the worry too that these highly coloured marinades are hiding iffy meat!

StuntNun · 26/07/2014 13:38

I went into my butchers and asked for the cheapest cut of meat they had and they sold me a lambs neck for £5 a kilo. It was on the bone but £5 a kilo for lamb is fantastic. It was a horrible thing, it was really obviously a neck and it smelled like sheep. I cooked it all day in the slow cooker with shallots and red wine and it was absolutely divine. The meat was so tender it shredded with a fork. Also as it was on the bone it was probably super-nutritious too. But it's really hard to get those kind of cuts. Maybe I need to be more proactive in asking for stuff as they have ordered oxtail in for me before but I don't have the confidence. The old butcher that worked there was a real traditional butcher and he would happily talk shop and suggest stuff but the new guys aren't so forthcoming.

I had a rubbish day yesterday and fell off the wagon to the tune of six strawberries. I'm annoyed that I used the old comfort eating excuse but at least my excursion was low carb. I think I might stick with ubercamp until Friday when my DH comes home as I'm only cooking for myself and I find ubercamp usually stops any bad eating in it's tracks.

B: three eggs scrambled
L: rotisserie chicken thighs and salad leaves with homemade vinaigrette
D: (will be) sirloin steak and mushrooms

If anyone else shops at Tesco I buy their two thin cut sirloin steaks for £4. Each is 125g so just right for a meal. I rely on them when my DH is away because it's difficult to manage my three kids on my own.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 26/07/2014 14:07

I'm sure your 6 strawberries wont have wrecked anything.

I am fighting extreme sweet/carb cravings just now which is really unusual. :( Really struggling.

Pisseslikeahorse · 26/07/2014 14:14

Hello all

Had a lovely evening last night with some friends who sat gobsmacked as I had a packet of pig snacks whilst they all tucked into their massive pub burgers. I love being smug, sitting with this tiny packet in front of me as their all served their dinners. Explaining 'that my body didn't need to fuel on that sort of stuff', and it was great being told how much I've changed Grin

So this morning I had to suffer self imposed redemption run to pickup the car, with dw who's is smugly faster than me and knows it condescending old bat then home to make breakfast.

looking forward to mondays weigh-in, hope you all having a good sunny day

b. smoked salmon scrambled eggs & courgette
L. tuna mayo & iceburge
D. lamb curry & roast cauliflower

Not a bad bargain Stunt although with neck you will have paid for a lot more meat than bone! When we were first married DH was a baker in his parents bakery and I often stood the shop for them. It was part butchery and I learned loads from the old butcher there. Of course we tended to sell the decent cuts and got left with the ones that took more ingenuity for ourselves but they are the ones where all the taste hides. Smile Used to love slow cooked oxtail. Much more difficult now that I have to do my big shop on-line. Our local Morrisons did sometimes sell small packs of oxtail and even a little chunk chucked into a casserole makes a difference to the richness.

I'm sure you 6 strawberries wont derail you! Berries are the best of the fruits aren't they and its not as if you demolished the whole punnet!
