Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - The cheating stops here

StuntNun · 02/06/2014 06:33

Hello again and it's time for weigh in. The cheating seems to have edged up a bit in the last week so I want to remind everyone that cheating is a really bad idea and will hinder your weight loss. It's called Bootcamp for a reason. We only want ten weeks from you and the cheat foods will still be there at the end of Bootcamp. But for now no cheats please. Next time you're tempted remember it isn't the last scone/cake/wine in the world.

If you need a reminder or you're joining Bootcamp partway through, the rules are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and you can also track your weight on the Weight Tracker.

As promised last week I've written some info on the science behind diets...

How do we lose weight?

First, why don't low fat restricted calorie diets work? It comes down to homeostasis: our bodies actively resist change. For some reason in humans our resistance to weight change appears to be asymmetric, that is we resist losing weight much more effectively than we resist gaining weight. Most of us have experienced first hand the gradual increase in weight over time, or the more abrupt but still unshiftable weight gain that happens with pregnancy. Basically it's easy to gain weight but difficult to lose weight. So we go on a reduced calorie diet, eating 1800 calories while our bodies are expending 2000 calories. We may lose some weight at first but eventually eating 1800 calories becomes the norm and our bodies resist the change by dropping the metabolic rate to match calorie output to input. But, and here's the problem, the metabolic rate might drop to reduce calorie expenditure by 300 calories rather than 200 in order to regain the lost weight and get back to our normal weight. So weight loss stops, we get disheartened and quit the diet and our reduced metabolic rate allows the weight to pile back on and then some, just in case we encounter this artificial famine again in the future.

So what's different about a low carb diet? One of the key rules of Bootcamp is to eat when you're hungry. This works to prevent the reduced metabolic rate that scuppers a reduced calorie diet. When you start eating a low carb diet and you have exhausted your glycogen stores, the liver starts converting fat from your diet into ketones. Your muscles start using ketones and then adapt to using fatty acids for energy. Your brain uses ketones and glucose from your diet along with glucose produced from protein by gluconeogenesis. The low levels of insulin induced by a low carb diet allow fatty acids to flow freely in and out of fat cells. It is this free flow of fatty acids from your fat cells that allows you to lose weight on a low carb diet without restricting calories. Your muscles cannot distinguish whether fatty acids came directly from your digestive system or from your fat cells, they just use them up as needed. As you adapt to the low carb diet, there is a reduction in your appetite in response to the ready availability of energy at all times. A low carb diet works simply by allowing your muscles and liver to freely use fatty acids released from your fat cells.

Good luck for the coming week. Keep on keeping on.

We've been 3 times now and the first time I overdid the salad....this time I only went up to get a plate for my meat.

I don't mind a few quid over but OH and I always end up with a bad deal as we don't drink alcohol very often. Another couple had cocktails, wine and then vodka and coke so I think they got a good deal!

antimatter · 08/06/2014 11:26

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice - well done to you too to resist!
In my case it was lack of bicuits what helped, but the realization of this rush of "emotions" in my stomach and then immediate (if I didn't know better I would say instinct) of wanting to reach for something to put in my stomach was a revelation.

Most of the time I think I an at a disadvantage at being an extrovert and overthinking but on this occasion it was necessary.

pingufan · 08/06/2014 11:55

I had the exact same thing earlier. I was preparing Sunday lunch and making stuffing (I love it and its that I miss most on my lunch) the smell was divine and I had a strong urge to put a spoonful (uncooked!) in my mouth! I had to ask myself whether I was hungry. I had no feelings of hunger in my stomach at all but there was a feeling of something in my stomach that was almost a physical urge.

I swift swig of water and it all went away but it just goes to show we are not just controlled by hunger pangs that tell us to eat. It was a bit of a revelation to me too!

lowcarbforthewin · 08/06/2014 12:24

The getting flabbier thing, I believe, is the fat beginning to break down in a certain way. I think anyway, would be interested to hear the science. I think also if you have a pouch of skin, it can empty out but you still have the loose skin, so it feels flabby.
Lovely salmon smeared with almond butter for lunch and a salad.

BIWI · 08/06/2014 15:55

Just a quick heads up: I'm 'in transit' between social events (get me!) so won't be home tomorrow morning to start the week 6 thread. I will do it when I get to work, so apologies for a slightly later start tomorrow!

miffy49 · 08/06/2014 16:09

lowcarbforthewin I seriously hope you're right! I haven't lost any weight lately but I have gone down an inch round my belly and my thighs and arms are really horridly floppy. I keep telling myself that the fat is actually going and I'm not banging my head on a wall with this WOE.

I have noticed in the past that I've sometimes had it where the really fatty bits go very soft and squishy just before the scales drop. Fingers crossed as I've been seriously tested this weekend when hubby came home with a huge, gluten free chocolate tart! It was a real effort to put him out a slice and then sit down to my yoghurt! I certainly deserve a visit from the whoosh fairy!

Doing pulled pork for Sunday tea. Made some coleslaw with home made mayo. Going to roll mine in little gem leaves instead of a carby wrap.

spamm · 08/06/2014 16:49

Hello all. Survived my first night home and have done my best not to let jet lag get to me.

Yesterday:
B/L: beef and salad and some veg on the plane
L: the inside of a chicken wrap on the plane
Second L: a bunless burger and salad
D: Chinese takeaway - grilled baby eggplant in spicy sauce, and then Gluten free beef and broccoli. I love the fact that our local Chinese has a long Gluten-free menu

Struggled with my water, as I could not get out of my seat on the plane, the man next to me slept the whole way and I was worried about drinking too much and having to wake him up.

But - the big news - I was 1.5lbs down when I weighed myself this morning, so although that is not an amazing achievement for effectively 2 weeks, I am so glad I stuck to my guns and did not put on any weight at all and lost a little. So that is just over 10 lbs in total. My next goal is to get under 200lbs.

Also, I can completely relate to all the talk about feeling flabby - I feel the same and it is so very weird!

lowcarbforthewin · 08/06/2014 16:53

A whole thread on being more jiggly here Wink

JimmyCorkhill · 08/06/2014 17:06

I survived a wedding!!

Canapes ignored.

Starter was parma ham. I left the honeyed figs. There was a mystery dressing though which was all over it.

Main meal was a beef roast. left the yorkshire pud but they had poured gravy over the whole meal before serving.

Pudding was chocolate fudge cake. It looked amazing so I decided to have some.....but after half I just stopped. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't amazing and I just knew I didn't want any more. This is an absolute revelation for me! When I was on Slimming World if I had started the cake I would have finished it regardless of whether I was enjoying it any more or not. I would have then felt like I had blown the diet and stuffed my face at the buffet too. Then because it was the weekend I would have eaten loads of crap on the Sunday too with promises to myself to start again on Monday, blah blah blah. But I didn't. I had some. I stopped. The end.

Ignored the evening buffet (and kept thinking 'how can people be hungry again already?')

Breakfast at the hotel in the morning was easy. lots of bacon and eggs.

A full day followed at a farm park where I just drank water and coffee. It's been 7 hours since brekkie and I am only just about to eat again.

So a very successful weekend for me Smile

trashcanjunkie · 08/06/2014 17:10

anti that is an extraordinarily fabulous achievement - to recognise and unemotionally analyse your thought process when stress triggers the need for a crutch. This place is a great crutch, and using it like that is a winning formula for the rest of your life. I have known about tummy brains for a good few years, and I love when I hear about it from others as it sounds so barmy I sometimes start to think I made it up Grin

cq you can definitely overdo veg. I have to be meticulously careful.

I'm so sorry to hear about your rotten row sarahbeeny very glad you're not getting a divorce, or eating that biscuit.

I'm pleased that people took the kick up the arse on the chin, as it were... I think, if I'm speaking my utter truth, that if you can't manage to do the ten weeks without cheating (and I'm differentiating between that and 'slippage') then this bootcamp isn't the place to be. That may sound unsupportive and non inclusive, but the bootcamp wasn't set up to be for everyone - there are plenty of other low-carb sections, or people could set their own one up. Hearing about peoples successful internal biscuit struggles and suchlike however, is uplifting, and should be encouraged. Often what you're thinking resonates with others in ways they hadn't even begun to consider.

Dp and I went out last night to a great thing. It's only on once a month and it's held in an empty railway shed in the cool bit of the city. There was amazing street food, speciality booze stalls for those drinking, and live music, which happened to be my friends band last night. They were excellent, which was a relief cos it's embarrassing when you go to see a friend band and they're shit. We had a lovely time, and there were actual low carb choices. Dp had curry goat which was incredible, and I had Peruvian chicken with salad and coriander yoghurt. We danced our socks off, and ended up going to an after-party for a festival that's running, and there was an actual old school rave going on - totally unplanned on our parts, but we ended up staying out dancing til 3! I am stiff as a board today, but as I hardly ever go out, we had a really lovely evening together and saw lots of nice friends.

Today I had clotted cream whilst dp cooked a fry up - eggs, bacon, mushrooms and bf saus. We have snacked on salaminis for lunch and there's beef brisket slow roasting in the oven now while I mn and he kills things on COD.

Somehow, I have gained this week. I have upped my water to 4litres, and cut out caffiene and berries. My tits are like bazukas though, and I have been a grumpy fucker as you may have noticed so I wonder if I'm hormonal and retaining fluid [hopefull] Hmm

pingufan · 08/06/2014 17:16

Lowcarbforthewin thanks for that link, it is reassuring as I was trying on swimsuits for my holiday earlier and my legs look dreadful, all wobbly and pitted. I don't know if they'll improve much in the 5 weeks before I go but hopefully ill be smaller somewhat.

CQ · 08/06/2014 17:22

I have a fridge full of veg. Overordered on the Ocado delivery this week so somehow have to use up celeriac, broccoli, courgettes, broccoli, peppers and leeks in short order.

I think while I still have lots to lose I don't need to really obsess too much about the amount of veg, do I? As long as I try and stick to the ones nearer the top of the allowed list. I thought the point of bootcamp was no weighing and measuring. While the scales are still moving down nicely I don't want to get hung up on detail - I have found in the past that having to weigh or count points etc just makes me think about food ALL day. Miserable.

CQ · 08/06/2014 17:23

Ooh, posted too soon - well done Jimmy on fantastic willpower at the wedding.

RoaringForties · 08/06/2014 17:34

CQ I don't and won't weigh anything ever which is why I love BC and why it has worked for me in the past. Hang on to us we'll get through it all somehow.

spamm I think your 1.5 down is a mega achievement with all your travelling and staying in hotels and rellys.

trash your body has been on a rollercoaster though so bound to be a bit confused and be trying to protect itself a bit.

lowcarb I have now started prodding myself, thanks!

B. I think it was bacon scrambled egg, 2 tiny toms, lashings of butter.
L. I have developed a bit of a thing for holey cheese slices from lidl
D. shepherds pie with yumtastic buttery swede mash topping with asparagus and my own lettuce, bastard slugs left me a little bit.

teawithlemon · 08/06/2014 17:38

Re fat bombs; what's the stand on Xylitol? Because I've tried making several variants of chocolate fat bomb recipes without success. I've used 85% cocoa solids - the one from Aldi is excellent value - with a mix of almond butter and normal butter but all far too bitter for me. So, I added a half teaspoon of xylitol et voila, edible!
Have I committed an unpardonable sin? Do I need to bin these (rather lush) treats?

KinkyDorito · 08/06/2014 18:04

b - scrambled eggs, lots of butter
l - quorn pieces, mushrooms and courgette in butter, olive oil and cream cheese (yum)
s - slice of gouda
d - vege burgers with cheese, green salad, mayo

keeping on...

teawithlemon · 08/06/2014 18:17

....have just read the rules again.
I've sinned. In need of forgiveness I offer this:
Going cold carby
Pleading stage 12...

KinkyDorito · 08/06/2014 18:26

Take this with a pinch of salt. It made me laugh.

www.buzzfeed.com/robynwilder/stages-of-not-eating-carbs

I also now want to make a cauli-pizza crust... Grin

KinkyDorito · 08/06/2014 18:27

snap teawith!!

Birdinacage · 08/06/2014 18:35

CQ if you've got a lot of veg that needs using up why not make them into soups? I find it a really handy way to up my fat intake as you can bung in a load of cream and butter while cooking it that you wouldn't easily be able to eat if you were just having the veg cooked as is, makes it really filling too so you can't overdo it and eat too much of the veg.

JimmyCorkhill · 08/06/2014 18:36

teawithlemon andKinkyDorito Grin Great minds eh!!
(Side note: can you have your name as a low carber? Maybe KinkyRoastedKale?!!)

CQ thanks

CQ · 08/06/2014 19:02

Yeah Kinky I think your name is a trifle insensitive on this thread Grin

Oh shit, I said trifle.

Off to look at vegetable soup recipes - can't get my head round going off-piste cooking with celeriac yet. Will have a look on the LC recipe thread too.

petalsandstars · 08/06/2014 20:07

Hmm, gave DH a few things to get from the shop, including "Greek yoghurt - not 0% fat" as I thought he'd pick up the first he saw....... and he comes back with fat free yoghurt Sad

Keeping on after minor slippage but not had enough water today due to long car journeys and lack of toilet stops.

pingufan · 08/06/2014 20:10

Lol kinkydorito love the link! It says peanut butter? Really? Is that ok?

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 08/06/2014 20:55

I've had a personally crap weekend (stress with ds off the rails). So my appetite is zip. But made myself eat and when passing fridge had either some butter or bit of lovely bitter choc fat bomb. Almond butter eh? That's next batch.
But the big thing is that I have realised I have not had (or wanted)a fizzy drink since we started, or juice. Just water or green tea or coffee and cream or almond milk. Not expecting a loss, but got flobby waist and tummy too. Can really notice it off my face.
Today bacon and egg (al fresco) coffee almond milk
Lunch, some gorgeous salami from farmers market, Parmesan bits, four tiny toms and olives. Dinner little bits of ham shank and salad.
