Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - The cheating stops here

StuntNun · 02/06/2014 06:33

Hello again and it's time for weigh in. The cheating seems to have edged up a bit in the last week so I want to remind everyone that cheating is a really bad idea and will hinder your weight loss. It's called Bootcamp for a reason. We only want ten weeks from you and the cheat foods will still be there at the end of Bootcamp. But for now no cheats please. Next time you're tempted remember it isn't the last scone/cake/wine in the world.

If you need a reminder or you're joining Bootcamp partway through, the rules are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and you can also track your weight on the Weight Tracker.

As promised last week I've written some info on the science behind diets...

How do we lose weight?

First, why don't low fat restricted calorie diets work? It comes down to homeostasis: our bodies actively resist change. For some reason in humans our resistance to weight change appears to be asymmetric, that is we resist losing weight much more effectively than we resist gaining weight. Most of us have experienced first hand the gradual increase in weight over time, or the more abrupt but still unshiftable weight gain that happens with pregnancy. Basically it's easy to gain weight but difficult to lose weight. So we go on a reduced calorie diet, eating 1800 calories while our bodies are expending 2000 calories. We may lose some weight at first but eventually eating 1800 calories becomes the norm and our bodies resist the change by dropping the metabolic rate to match calorie output to input. But, and here's the problem, the metabolic rate might drop to reduce calorie expenditure by 300 calories rather than 200 in order to regain the lost weight and get back to our normal weight. So weight loss stops, we get disheartened and quit the diet and our reduced metabolic rate allows the weight to pile back on and then some, just in case we encounter this artificial famine again in the future.

So what's different about a low carb diet? One of the key rules of Bootcamp is to eat when you're hungry. This works to prevent the reduced metabolic rate that scuppers a reduced calorie diet. When you start eating a low carb diet and you have exhausted your glycogen stores, the liver starts converting fat from your diet into ketones. Your muscles start using ketones and then adapt to using fatty acids for energy. Your brain uses ketones and glucose from your diet along with glucose produced from protein by gluconeogenesis. The low levels of insulin induced by a low carb diet allow fatty acids to flow freely in and out of fat cells. It is this free flow of fatty acids from your fat cells that allows you to lose weight on a low carb diet without restricting calories. Your muscles cannot distinguish whether fatty acids came directly from your digestive system or from your fat cells, they just use them up as needed. As you adapt to the low carb diet, there is a reduction in your appetite in response to the ready availability of energy at all times. A low carb diet works simply by allowing your muscles and liver to freely use fatty acids released from your fat cells.

Good luck for the coming week. Keep on keeping on.

Some really good news on here today, lovely to read and congrats to everyone for happier scales and new jobs!
Quiet day today, amazing thunderstorms, did the food shopping as well.
So,
B mushrooms fried in butter
L a dessert spoon of clotted cream with blueberries and few raspberries. dh looked a bit shocked, doesn't quite believe my explanation, and I must admit it seemed a bit wrong, delicious, but wrong! Will see if the extra fat helps, looking back at my menu on here I think I might be eating too much protein and not enough fat as well.
D steak with paleo quac and salad.
Have a good day everyone!

wombat22 · 07/06/2014 16:12

If you'll pardon the pun, I've finally bitten the bullet and tried BPC today. Grin It was a revelation. I am not a big fan of coffee (only drink decaf) but I want to give up dairy completely next week. I was surprised that it tasted so pleasant. I won't say it was fantastic as I could taste the coconut from the coconut oil, but it was certainly drinkable, it wasn't at all greasy and was like having milk in it. So that's dairy out next week as i think it may be stalling me. I also made my own mayo for the first time today and it's delish. Thank you Blush

RoaringForties · 07/06/2014 18:39

That's fabulous news olives must be a great feeling.
I've been a taxi service all day for various sporting activities and have been rubbish with my water and now have a thumping head.
But but butSmile people are begining to notice my lost poundage. It has given me a great boost.
Hope everyone's weekend is ok and raindrops are dodged.

Pisseslikeahorse · 07/06/2014 18:46

hello all,

Its been a good day, beat my 5k personal best and striped some wallpaper. As dw would say 'Rock n Roll' Smile

B. yogurt BPC
L. Eggs and veg
S. BPC & pig snacks
D. More fish and salad dressed in chilli mayo

StuntNun · 07/06/2014 19:42

Definitely fat-adapted now then Pisses. Smile It's a good feeling when you have consistent energy for exercise.

Waves weakly at everyone. Improving slowly, still queasy but food staying down though still only managed 1 meal: lunch of roast veg & a sausage and one coffee with cream but at least it's low carb. I didn't like eating carbs - didn't feel like proper food.

I had been snacking too much recently, I will now try to stick to 3 meals per day once Im fully recovered.

Good to hear about all the fat adapted exercising. I used to swim most mornings for an hour, always fasted from the night before & never had any problems with energy or being ravenous after. Proper fast lane swimming, not floral swimcap type. I don't have time or money for it these days but I do miss it. And I'd have to wear shorts which would hinder my progress.

Has anyone tried high intensity intervals? I've been reading the fast exercise book from my sickbed and I have a skipping rope....

Locarblil · 07/06/2014 20:52

Had a good couple of days

Today:

B - egg mayo & lettuce coffee & cream
L - Fry up courtesy of DH
D - chicken salad

S - everyone else was having ice cream so I made low carb pancakes like this (without the sweetener), a handful of strawberries, whipped cream & 2 squares of Lint 70% melted & drizzled over. It was AMAZING, not one for every day but yum!

Was a pound and a half down this morning, hoping that stays until Monday, but v motivating to see changes on the scales. Loving everyone else enjoying the food too :)

Hope you feel better soon Seri.

StuntNun · 07/06/2014 21:10

Seri I do High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) on the cross-trainer. It's way more effective than steady-state exercise so you don't need to exercise for as long.

Not feeling too great the last few days. I'm dizzy, light headed and very very tired. I don't think it's the diet, or I hope not, as I'm really enjoying this WOE.

pingufan · 07/06/2014 21:51

Hope I haven't overdone the veg today I've a feeling that the passata in my mince lunch plus the spinach, peppers, onion, mushrooms, lettuce and cucumber I had with the steak tonight may have been too much.

Oh well bit less veg on my Sunday lunch plate tomorrow!

CQ · 07/06/2014 22:00

Can you overdo veg??

I was looking forward to curry tonight as DD away at a sleepover and she doesn't like it. But in the end decided I wasn't that hungry, just had an avocado with tuna mayo, it was delicious and just what I needed.

Now off for an early night to catch up on some zzzz's. I definitely feel I graze more when I'm tired, just constantly looking for energy.

RoaringForties · 07/06/2014 22:44

I bloody love waterGrin

antimatter · 07/06/2014 23:38

I made very nice spinach side dish from this recipe:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/848636/spinach-madeleine
but without cheddar and jalapeño, instead of mascarpone I used just economy cream cheese
yummy!

After last weekend disaster I am being very disciplined this week.
I think i am back in ketosis as my appetite is very low and few punds dropped (I am weighting myself a daily).

I am actually grateful for telling off on this thread as it made me more determined to be sensible and not give in to any temptation.

I want to describe how I experienced a flood of some emotions (adrenaline or some other hormones - I don't know what they were) yesterday.

I had a lot of problems with my car last week and had to work form home in total for 6 days. My manager was very understanding but I don't like to push for favours and was hoping car will be fixed on Wed. I picked it up on Wed, drove 2 miles and car died in the middle of the traffic on a very busy road. Towed it back to the garage (3rd time in 2 months on a 12 months RAC membership, I believe only 5 are allowed....). So had to send apologetic text to my manager. Next day, on Thursday garage didn't have time to fix my car, Then on Friday it was touch and go whether they can finish it....
I took a bus to collect it as it was fixed but they said - there may still be some issue as they were confused why my clutch was misbehaving on Wed.

As I was on the bus to collect it I got a phone call from my DD that she had an accident. She walked under a car! Just 2 bruises on her shin. She was at home resting. She is in the middle of hr GCSE's (16 exams done, 9 to do in the next 2 weeks). My imagination can be very convincing. In my head I saw us having to go to the A&E for x-ray, waiting on Friday night in the waiting room for 5 or 6 hours... etc.. etc...

And that's when I felt this need to stuff my face with food. The feeling of wanting to eat something sweet an carby wasn't as strong as in the past (I think I was getting into ketosis already). I had to tell to myself to stop worrying as she said she was able to walk back to a bus stop and now it doesn't hurt much. In fact when I got home I put bag of peas from the freezer on her leg, then swapped it for frozen onions.... She is much better today anyway.

I am 100% sure if it wasn't for me being in ketosis and having thought about what was discussed earlier on in this thread about cheating and thinking about my motivation I would have stuffer my face with a lot of chocolate and biscuits yesterday. And felt crap about it.

That rush of emotions into my stomach is so familiar that for many years I would never really stop and think about it but grabbed something sweet and carby and then felt a bit guilty afterwards (well not too much most of the time Smile).

antimatter · 08/06/2014 00:46

random fact from another thread...
who knew that there's second brain in our stomachs!!!

RoaringForties · 08/06/2014 07:33

That's really interesting, I was listening to a programme about aboriginies who believe that our biggest brain is in the stomach, intuition, gut feelings etc. The second in the heart and the smallest in our heads.

glenthebattleostrich · 08/06/2014 07:43

Morning everyone.

Another busy Sunday here so posting early.

We are off visiting friends today and going to a children's party where all the food for grown ups will be carb heavy too. Packing a little bag of goodies for me and requesting my sandwiches are made into salad.

Breakfast was Greek yogurt with a couple of blackberries and tea made with cream.

Upped the fat again yesterday and woke up half a lb lighter. I'm wondering how tea would taste with a bit of coconut oil in. May experiment.

IrianofWay · 08/06/2014 08:31

Another 1lb bites the dust!!! Grin

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 08/06/2014 08:33

Antimatter that sounds like a real achievement! I agree that the need to stay in ketosis is quite motivating. After a while, all the conscious decisions that you make to avoid carbs/comfort eating will merge to become subconscious habit and it all becomes much easier! Glad your DD is ok.

Rubbish day yesterday (not foodwise). I had a massive argument with DH and I kept thinking; well, if this is it, if this is the end then I'm going to have a biscuit. But I didn't want to waste that biscuit if it was all just an argument and I kept hoping that we could sort it out, so, the biscuit never got eaten.

Stupid DH had essentially got so tired and hungry that he was utterly utterly unreasonable and he lacks the insight to see that in himself. He was then so angry and upset that he wouldn't eat until he eventually agreed to have some cereal at 10pm and surprise surprise, calmed down. it was all sparked off because he was trying to hammer a nail into a live electricity cable...Confused

Have a good day everyone, enjoy your party Glen! You sound well prepared.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 08/06/2014 08:34

Sorry, didn't notice the pun, sparked indeed!

lowcarbforthewin · 08/06/2014 09:35

Well I survived my party! So proud of myself. People were so supportive, there was no 'oh go on, have x'. I stuck to water all evening, having had a big meal before I went out, even though there was so much nice food out.

Really, it was such a relief that I achieved this. My brain was going 'you can eat just a couple of nibbles, that won't hurt. It's only a tiny cheat. They look so good.' But I knew that was bollocks and stayed firm.

I feel hideous this morning. So hungover and nauseous, but that is just payback for daring to have some fun. So will be lying very still today. Just ate some boiled eggs sitting out in my garden. Have salmon for lunch and beef burger for supper.

pingufan · 08/06/2014 09:36

Strangely, although I've lost over 20lbs I feel flabbier than ever! Everything feels soft and just, flabby. Am feeling impatient because I've got some nice clothes I want to get into properly but the weight loss is off my shoulders, face, hands etc.

I want it off my bum and belly though. Going to have to get used to exercise too I think.....hate it....

SayraT · 08/06/2014 09:50

pingu I think on the last camp a few of us got softer/flabbier, we decided, or someone told us, it is your body preparing the fat to move on. So it's a good thing! Grin

Great dinner last night at OHs friends birthday, we were at viva Brazil where they just serve meat Smile Different types are cooked on big sticks on a spit then brought to the table and bits carved off for you. Was yummy, only problem was at end they split bill and it came to £45 each, I'd only had water so objected and felt awful doing so....but if I hadn't my free tap water and OHs 3 cokes would have cost us £30!

pingufan · 08/06/2014 10:38

Oh thanks, I don't feel so bad now!

Viva Brazil is gorgeous, perfect for this WOE although I know I visited the salad bar too much when I last went there. Well done on speaking up about the bill split - I would have done the same, if it was only a few pounds then fair enough but £30 for 3 cokes would have been outrageous!

Have a good day everyone

Todays menu
B - BPC
L - Roast chicken leg with buttered veg
D - not sure yet, maybe a few sausages, salad etc - see how hungry I am
