Week 5 - Low Carb Bootcamp - The cheating stops here

StuntNun · 02/06/2014 06:33

Hello again and it's time for weigh in. The cheating seems to have edged up a bit in the last week so I want to remind everyone that cheating is a really bad idea and will hinder your weight loss. It's called Bootcamp for a reason. We only want ten weeks from you and the cheat foods will still be there at the end of Bootcamp. But for now no cheats please. Next time you're tempted remember it isn't the last scone/cake/wine in the world.

If you need a reminder or you're joining Bootcamp partway through, the rules are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and you can also track your weight on the Weight Tracker.

As promised last week I've written some info on the science behind diets...

How do we lose weight?

First, why don't low fat restricted calorie diets work? It comes down to homeostasis: our bodies actively resist change. For some reason in humans our resistance to weight change appears to be asymmetric, that is we resist losing weight much more effectively than we resist gaining weight. Most of us have experienced first hand the gradual increase in weight over time, or the more abrupt but still unshiftable weight gain that happens with pregnancy. Basically it's easy to gain weight but difficult to lose weight. So we go on a reduced calorie diet, eating 1800 calories while our bodies are expending 2000 calories. We may lose some weight at first but eventually eating 1800 calories becomes the norm and our bodies resist the change by dropping the metabolic rate to match calorie output to input. But, and here's the problem, the metabolic rate might drop to reduce calorie expenditure by 300 calories rather than 200 in order to regain the lost weight and get back to our normal weight. So weight loss stops, we get disheartened and quit the diet and our reduced metabolic rate allows the weight to pile back on and then some, just in case we encounter this artificial famine again in the future.

So what's different about a low carb diet? One of the key rules of Bootcamp is to eat when you're hungry. This works to prevent the reduced metabolic rate that scuppers a reduced calorie diet. When you start eating a low carb diet and you have exhausted your glycogen stores, the liver starts converting fat from your diet into ketones. Your muscles start using ketones and then adapt to using fatty acids for energy. Your brain uses ketones and glucose from your diet along with glucose produced from protein by gluconeogenesis. The low levels of insulin induced by a low carb diet allow fatty acids to flow freely in and out of fat cells. It is this free flow of fatty acids from your fat cells that allows you to lose weight on a low carb diet without restricting calories. Your muscles cannot distinguish whether fatty acids came directly from your digestive system or from your fat cells, they just use them up as needed. As you adapt to the low carb diet, there is a reduction in your appetite in response to the ready availability of energy at all times. A low carb diet works simply by allowing your muscles and liver to freely use fatty acids released from your fat cells.

Good luck for the coming week. Keep on keeping on.

miffy49 - well done for great weight loss and sticking with it!

I would say try perhaps drop proteins and up fat - 5-10%
I was reading about how upping fat speeds up weight loss but obviously we can't go 100% fat only Grin.

I am wondering if in my case butter should be replaced by ghee. I also tried new mayo so that also may be a culprit. I have to make my own this weekend.

I have been eating very few products and my psoriasis is not better at all Sad.

I did a bit of autoimmune Paelo (AIP as per paleomummy) few weeks ago and weight was flying off and skin started clearing up off. I decided to try it again from this weekend once I do my shopping. I need couple of weeks to start seeing results.

I know butter is recommended on Paleo, but only organic and wasn't buying that but mixture of various brands hoping to find best flavour. Also extreme AIP's don't even eat eggs... I had quite a few in the last 4 weeks.

trashcanjunkie · 06/06/2014 14:09

Hiya all! Just a quick sms

Have had a six pound gain this week, which I'm hoping is just fluid retention. I've upped my water to 4ltrs to try and shift it.

Busy catching up on all the grotty jobs in the house that were abandoned whilst I had food poisoning. Joy Hmm

Think I'm gonna smash up a cupboard in the bedroom to make more space Grin

Food today so far
B - Left over bolognese sauce (homemade and very short on tomatoes)
L - Salmon, olives, little bit of blue cheese, rocket salad, celery, in mayo

Not thought through dinner - got some lamb chops but need some veg. Must go proper shopping

2 litres of water and a salted caramel green tea (sorry to rub it in sayra)

Some fantastic posts, and spamm that is so not cheaty talk! That's surviving and triumphing talk imo Grin

StuntNun · 06/06/2014 14:45

Miffy your daily calories may be too low. If your body thinks it's starving then it will hold on to the fat as much as possible. Plenty of people break a stall by upping their calories, even temporarily. Other things you could try are ubercamp, a fat fast or a carb refeed. Do you have much weight still to lose?

Thanks for the replies.

JimmyCorkhill the nightshades ad oxalates sort of run together. I don't miss potatoes as I soon realised from going low carb that I tended to eat them out of habit and I'm not sure I actually like them! I do miss being able to use a bit of paprika or chilli powder but its just not worth the joint pain so, whislt I get a bit resentful at times, it does improve life overall. I miss nuts and chocolate though.

Antimatter thats been my next plan although my protein intake isn't huge.

Stuntnun I've wondered if I don't actually eat enough now. I'm seldom hungry and I do eat if I feel the need but I try not to eat out of habit. I did try the Atkins fat fast but it didn't seem to make that much difference. I had a quick look at ubercamp but I'm not sure I can give it my all with being dairy free. Not ruled it out though. I have just over 2st to go yet. That is being sensible and not going for skinny minny!

lowcarbforthewin · 06/06/2014 18:03

They tend to be the sort of people who need you to be the same as them (priority wise) or better than them, or someone who can benefit them in some way. If you don't fulfill those criteria they won't waste time on you. Their loss.

You know that makes so much sense to me. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. I think you are absolutely right. It has really helped seeing that written down. Thanks Being kind and welcoming was a huge thing in my family growing up, I had it bashed into me that you show an interest in people and are kind to new people, and I suppose I've always struggled that other people don't do that. I've taken it very personally in the past, but I can see increasingly that it isn't really about me. I have enough people who do value me, I just have to remember that at times like last night when it's a bit overwhelming.

I had some dark chocolate today. It really wasn't very nice, I couldn't eat much and it made me feel a bit sick. Definitely battling cravings to eat something I shouldn't despite that so just hanging on in there.

You know, I've really noticed recently, when I go out. I AM GETTING CHECKED OUT. By MEN! Pretty men. I've always mostly been ignored by men, being so overweight. Really, it was like being invisible. I suddenly look massively hot Wink, and it's made such a huge difference. It's a nice feeling. If I had any energy I would be going out and having much coitus with lots of 20 year old men and enjoying this development. Grin

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 06/06/2014 18:22

Friday, thank the gods. Had bacon and mushrooms, salad, two boiled eggs, three strawberries and over 2 snacks and after lunch one of the dark choc fat bombs. Dinner is chilli (taking mine out before I put more tomato paste in) I've been promising myself a gin and soda all day, but cba.
But I'm 185! That's brill!

StuntNun · 06/06/2014 20:00

If anyone has good fat bomb recipes please could you post them on the recipe thread. I made some and they were all but inedible bitter salty coconutty yuck. Sad

Parsnipcake · 06/06/2014 20:09

stuntnun thanks for all your help. In return I have posted my fat bomb recipes. The first is the nicest, but I do the 2nd as gelatine is supposed to help reduce saggy skin.

spamm · 06/06/2014 20:37

Thanks you BIWi and LittleMiss and all of you. I really do value the support on this thread, it is keeping me motivated beyond anything I have tried recently, and that means a lot to me.

Good day today. Very emotional - the course I have been on is an amazing journey through leadership development and today we did some small group coaching. I am still trying to come to terms with how much physical and emotional weight I am carrying, and I am determined to make some changes. My poor male peers were slightly overwhelmed by how upset I got and how much I cried, but they were brilliant and gave me some amazing advice and just listened so well.

Anyway, my food:
B: poached eggs, bacon and mushrooms, tea with cream
L: salmon and chicken meatballs, with grilled aubergine and courgette, and salad with olive oil
D: mozzarella and avocado, followed by chicken with béarnaise sauce and buttered spinach and watercress

No snacks, and 3.5 ltrs of water.

I fly home in the morning at 7.30 am. I am looking forward to seeing my Dh and my DS, and hug them both. I have really missed them!

miffy49 · 06/06/2014 21:10

Parsnipcake do you make the gelatine ones using the normal amount of liquid or do you make it more solid?

Seri77 · 06/06/2014 21:30

Since my last post I have been thoroughly wrung out by a D&V bug. I've only managed 1 small meal per day for the last 2 days just for the sake of having something to vomit back up (sadly of bland carb as couldn't stomach anything better). Diarolyte has been my friend.

Trash I have no idea how you survived campylobacter. I've been a snivelling heap on the bathroom floor.

On the plus side, I've broken my stall and now 10 stone 13.4. Will see how that pans out. Usually when I'm sick I still feel hungry but I have had no hunger pangs at all. Is my body just running on its fat stores?

Commiserations to those who've also had the D&V bug. I might cautiously try a cheese slice now.

CQ · 06/06/2014 21:35

Miffy you've lost an amazing amount - 50lbs is about what a 5 yr old child weighs!! (I like to visualise things like that Grin)

Hope you manage to find a way down off that plateau soon - lots of wise wimmin on this thread. Can I ask - what's FMS?

I have just had the most delicious supper. I was making pasta carbonara for the kids, so once I'd made the sauce (bacon/onion/garlic/cream/egg), I tipped most of it into their pasta, and kept some back for me. Then I stirred in some leftover roasted aubergine and heated it through. OMG it was divine. Who needs pasta?

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 06/06/2014 21:41

Evening everyone! Lots of chatter on the threat today Grin

Pisses I'm glad it was helpful to someone! Human beings are so complex. I'm sure lots of people will still be around after the 10 week bootcamp.

Lowcarb I've (finally) got some of that salted caramel green tea today, thanks for that! It's lovely, and I don't normally like green tea. Enjoy your party tomorrow. It's a real triumph, finding a workable way around a difficult situation. Black farmer do some chipolatas if they're any good?

Pingu BPC upsets my stomach too, I thought it was just my imagination until you mentioned it!

I've had a lovely day but a bit off-piste diet wise (warning!)

I'd decided that I'd cut down my BCL days to one in the week and that it would be a Friday so I had some (85%) chocolate this afternoon and was planning some low carb sushi and some wine for the evening. At 4:50 I had a call from some friends who were unexpectedly in the vicinity and they came round bringing dinner with them, as 200g of prawns, half a cucumber and some nori certainly won't feed 8...

They brought a korma sauce (10g carb/100g), chicken and rice, so I did a salad, avoided the rice and made an emergency Crabby Crumble. We had a great meal all round but much carbier than I'd intended.

I didn't really feel that I could refuse the chicken and the only way around this would've been to have a better stocked fridge and freezer really! They fully understand about me not having rice having been to a low carb feast here previously. A small triumph was that I put sugar on the table for the sugar addicts to add to the crumble and no-one did. Converting people slowly.

Anyway, I will forgo my wine and keep on keeping on.

CQ · 06/06/2014 21:42

Must remember to update the thread before I post!

Parsnip tell me more about gelatine and saggy skin - today I realised that I am getting BINGO WINGS because my arms are not longer so porky. Talk about a mixed blessing. Must add tricep dips to the daily routing Hmm

lowcarb how fantastic is that - how much weight have you lost now? What a boost for the self confidence when men start checking you out again. Especially pretty ones Grin

Safe flight home spamm, I'm sure your boys will be overjoyed to see you - don't let jet lag spoil your willpower, it's a killer.

Sympathy to you, Seri - but don't rush back to dairy it can really trigger a sensitive gut. I would try something more bland like chicken or egg if you can face it.

CQ · 06/06/2014 21:44
  • no longer so porky

Doh.

Parsnipcake · 06/06/2014 22:09

I haven't researched it a lot, but have read on various ketogenic websites that people take gelatine capsules as they promote skin regeneration ( and my gran swore by jelly cubes for healthy nails). Further reading said any gelatine, including aspic and sugar free jelly works too. I have been doing Pilates and some weight training, but I tore a ligament in my knee last week and am struggling to exercise, so I thought I would try this. I'm not really a fan of sugar substitutes, but freezing the jelly makes it taste better.

I do make it stringer, and I find the cream helps too.

lowcarbforthewin · 06/06/2014 23:46

Sarah wasn't me who recommended that but sounds yum and glad you liked it.
CQ 5.5 stones ((over ten years). I've been stalled at around 11 stones all year, but the inches are definitely coming off. Really, I can't tell you how different I look. Just want to get the rest of it now and get on with my new thin life.

trashcanjunkie · 07/06/2014 01:40

seri maaaaan I feel your pain. Day four was when I would have accepted death cheerfully. The stomach cramps were the worst pain I've felt in a long time. The first day I thought I had a cold or the beginning of flu! I went to work and couldn't actually do my job! I ended up sitting in the car outside the dcs school for 45 minutes as I knew I wouldn't make it home and back again, so I just festered and listened to radio four. When the kids came out, I went for parent of the year award... I sent them down to the park with instructions to walk home afterwards. Then I drove home and lay in bed nearly dying. I was trying to come up with ways to tell them how to cook their own tea, when mercy of mercies they came home having bumped into dc1 (17) who doesn't live at home. He came to check I was ok, and I honestly could have cried when I saw him from the recesses of my pit! He cooked and cleaned, bless him. After that I have to say I was very very lucky as dp came home from work, and properly nursed me, and even took days off work to stroke my brow when I had to go to hospital for fluids and painkillers. I hope yours is the d and v version... loads of folks here have had it, and have rallied after a few days. Ds2 had it and ended up on a blasted drip

Parsnip aaaaayaaaz, torn ligament. Humph. Rubbish, hope you're healed soon.

Feet killing - did do a mega tidy and have re-arrange boudoir. Very pleased.

Bed now zzzzzzzzzzz

LittleMissDisorganized · 07/06/2014 07:27

Rushing in and out, be back in a week - so I weighed early before going away and there is a downwards trend - actually to the lowest weight I've been, by the tiniest 1/4lb but maybe this upping the fat works but takes a while.

Thank you all so much for the encouragement, feel like this might have broken it but it just took time and keeping on. I am making strong decisions for the holiday's eating and have Sainsbury's delivering tonight - so looking forward to it, keep going everyone, see you next weekend!

PeonyStick · 07/06/2014 07:50

So sorry - have nearly missed a whole week - my new job is totally overwhelming and my learning curve is vertical! I will learn my way - but at the moment it is taking over with reading to do every night as well as long hours !

I have read all of the thread now and have no wise insight into the debate - apart from as someone who has got to maintenance ...... Going off piste knocks you back a long way .... And that other low carb threads and not bootcamp is probably the place for that . Bootcamp is really designed for the ' all for one and one for all' let's follow the rules together .....

I am maintaining now - but that looks just like bootcamp light at the mo as it feels healthy and right . I have STS this week , so that seems like the right choice . I have ditched MFP for a while to see if I can start to live this WOE without thinking about it .

pingufan · 07/06/2014 08:25

Hi all, hope you are all fine!

The last of those pesky 4lbs I gained last weekend has departed this morning - 2 days to put it on and 5 days to get it off meaning I've had a wasted week - let it be a lesson!

Despite me feeling that the BPC had made my tummy feel like I was going to have an accident yesterday I actually didnt and the feeling went away by late afternoon. I felt so energised in the work in the morning I flew about everywhere and loved how it felt so Ive been brave and had another for breakfast this morning. I put slightly less coconut oil in and only 1 spoon on coffee granules instead of 2 (no wonder I was flying lol) see if that makes a difference.

Todays food
B - BPC & babybel
L - leftovers from mince / mushroom / courgette / passata type mix up dish (had oils swimming on the surface from olive oil & butter - delish)
D - Sirloin steak with mushroom / peppers - I have cream there so may try & make a pepper sauce :)

Have a good day everyone xx

Newly discovered drawback of LC: water requirement + 3 hour, standing room only train journey = embarrassment all round.

olivesnutsandcheese · 07/06/2014 10:31

Morning campers

Feeling pretty happy today, DH was offered a fab new job yesterday with a really great package so thinking we might actually be able to go on holiday (when DS is not quite such a whirlwind of trouble and mischief) and the scales were kind. Like others, previous off-pisteing has gone after a week of conscious upping fat & water.
We celebrated the job in a bootcamp lite manner last night - but what joy to be able to start the day today with fried eggs and crispy bacon. Yum!
Love this WOE Smile

lowcarbforthewin · 07/06/2014 11:45

Great news olives!
I just had my carer here and we have cooked up a storm. I made this great mushroom powder from the nom nom paleo app, it smells sooo good. It is basically porcini mushrooms, chilli flakes, salt and pepper and fresh thyme. You can scatter it on food or bake with it. We also tried making blender Hollandaise sauce but sadly it really didn't work. Never mind, I realised melted butter on everything is far more tempting. Also made some fat bombs with coconut oil and coconut cream and cacao powder. They look like they will taste great.
Feeling really motivated today.

glenthebattleostrich · 07/06/2014 14:01

Hi everyone,

Been shopping today and about to go batch cook / marinade the entire meat aisle!

B ff yogurt and strawberry, tea with cream
L spare ribs, clotted cream for pud (yum)
T steak with mushrooms, samphire and asparagus all cooked in butter.

Need to up the water and exercise this week. Weighed this morning and finally below 185lb, just but below Grin
