Low-carb bootcamp

Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the hard work is over!

Morning all!

Well done everyone for getting through the first two weeks. Still a bit of carb flu around by the sound of it though. Remember it's really important to keep your electrolyte levels up, with all the water that we're drinking. This means plenty of salt!

I know we're all told to keep the salt down, but it's (yet another) thing when you're low carbing that runs counter to expectations. Cook with it, and put it on your food.

Here's a really good post about salt and why we need it

As well as sodium, we also need magnesium and potassium - salmon, spinach, avocado and (full fat) natural yoghurt are all good.

Bootcamp Light

So now, if you want to, you can move on to Bootcamp Light. The rules for this are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

(Oh, and don't forget [[www.mumsnet.com/bootcamp the Weight Tracker as well)

Essentially the differences are that you can, if you want, start to skip breakfast if you're not hungry - I know that lots of people have problems with eating first thing. By now you should have stabilised your blood sugar levels, so if you're not hungry in the morning (or at any other time of the day) you don't have to force yourself to eat. Just make sure you don't end up ravenous later on and without anything appropriately low carb to eat!

You can introduce some fruit - berries or rhubarb only (although bear in mind that rhubarb will need to be sweetened, which will mean using an artificial sweetener; stevia is probably the best one to use - brands are PureVia or Truvia.) But be careful not to go mad - it's an occasional thing, and in moderation!

Similarly with nuts and seeds. These can be introduced now as snacks, but go easy. They can quickly add lots of carbs to your diet. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest in carbs. And if in doubt, check the carb count on the back of the packet

And you can also introduce alcohol, but with the same warnings about moderation! Spirits like vodka and gin are the best, as these are low carb - drink them with sparkling water or - if you have to - slimline tonic. Champagne, dry white and red wine are allowed, but these do have carbs, so go easy.

The week 3 (or 4, or 5) stall

PLEASE NOTE! IT IS VERY, VERY COMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER AT THIS POINT.

This is to do with your body switching from carb-burning to fat-burning - StuntNun posted a really good post about this last week, I think, and I'll ask her to re-post. It is entirely normal and doesn't signal that you're doing anything wrong.

However - you may feel, knowing this, that you want to stay on Bootcamp for a bit longer. There is no problem doing that, as long as you are getting your carbs from vegetables and salad. You may want to consider doing Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

So good luck everyone! Here's to another good week Flowers

My question is getting lost up there!

biwi is there a limit to my cream intake?

I don't have any yogurt or any hot drinks with dairy at all. I've grown quite partial to 150ml of whipped double cream just eaten out of the bowl Blush

Holger - thank you! The pork was what I fancied most on that menu anyway so will just eat the (hopefully) delicious pork and assess the rest on the day!

Not a bad day here.

B - coffee with cream & strawberries with cream (a loving farewell to dairy!)

L - chicken salad (from M&S)

D - roast chicken, brocolli & asparagus spears with butter lavished over them.

Monkey from a carb point of view cream is slightly lower than yoghurt but it is more calorific so if you're scoffing loads of it then you may need to make sure your overall calorie intake isn't too high. Another issue with cream is that the milk protein is less broken down than in yoghurt so if you have a problem with dairy it may be more likely to stall you. If you're eating cream and still losing weight then carry on. I went through a clotted cream phase and managed to still lose weight.

Well done everyone - loosers and soon to be lososers incusive.
2 lb off here which is good because I am close to my target weight - I want to get back to the weight I was before I became unwell.
Technically I have 2 more days to go on BC but I conveniently forgot this after buying blueberries! I have missed fruit!
I presume even very dark chocolate is still off the menu!
B greek yogurt with coconut cream, butter fried mushrooms at 11
L venison steak with broccoli
D cauliflower, cottage pie with celeriac mash -this time ds eat some of the mash.

Had 3 strawberries today. Tasted like heaven.

Please can someone tell me what to do with this ugly looking thing called celeriac that I have lurking in my fridge? Presumably peel it and boil/roast it? Are there any seeds or hard core-y bits that I need to know about?

On a business trip right now, but I am trying to be very good. Drinking lots of water and sticking to the rules as much as possible.

B: scrambled eggs with spinach, bacon and turkey sausage. they did not have any other veg, but I did my best.
L: Turkey burger (no bun) with mayonnaise, lettuce, 1 slice of tomato and roast veg
D: No idea - going to a big dinner at a colleague's house, so I will just have to be careful. I have offered to drive my boss, so I can avoid alcohol without having to explain myself.

I cannot weigh myself right now, no scales in the hotel, so I will have to do my weigh in on Wednesday morning. I am just hoping for a loss.

Thank you stunt Flowers

I'm having probably a 300ml tub a week, so not a vast amount?!

I am stalled though, but I've cheated loads and am due on so Ho hum.

Oh, I need to ask something else too Blush

I haven't had a poo since Thursday morning.

Will this be contributing to no weight loss too? Blush

I'm usually an every other day girl, and don't feel constipated. Just hoping I may drop 5lb once my period arrives and I've been to the toilet Grin

CQ "peel" the celeriac by chopping off the outsides with a sharp knife.

There are no seeds or core or anything else to worry about.

As far as I'm concerned, celeriac chips are the superior way to eat celeriac. So, chop into chips, douse in oil, roast in oven for roughly 35 minutes, turn occasionally (keep an eye on them as I am quite an "approximate" chef and that timing may be suspect.)

I once did a celeriac dauphinoise (chopped into thin slices, layer with cream, bake) which was delicious but a bit too rich for me in the end.

Brunch - bacon lardons with an avocado both fried in olive oil.
Wasn't hungry after that - there was a lovely lunch provided in our meeting in the City and bowls of exotic fruit. I had water.
Dinner - friend chicken in olive oil with peppers and courgettes and had spinach with lots of butter on the side. I might need to take lunch with me tomorrow as I think the place I am at for work puts on a very carby lunch with not much choice of anything decent.

I'm going to an all day school sports thing on Saturday. School provides food in a marquee but it's mostly things like sausage rolls, sandwiches & cakes.

So I'm planning to take along my own little picnic. I'm going to do some mini frittata's in a muffin tin and take some of them along cold. Also some Babybel and pepperami. Any other suggestions?

And lots of water of course Grin But not sure what the 'facilities' will be like and I HATE using portaloos. If they are the only choice I will have to cut back my drinking for the day Confused

Thanks daisychicken! How are you getting on yourself, is it working for you or am I fooling myself and it's a function of the milder weather and the longer days?

SnowieBear · 19/05/2014 22:37

CQ how about... olives, cucumber batons/slices, some cold meats (plenty of choice there!), hard boiled eggs?

monkeyface - yes, there is a difference between yoghurt and cream - it's something to do with the sugars it contains, the lactose or lactase

I've just got in from a long day/night out, so I'll try and find something for you tomorrow, but basically, if you think you have a dairy problem, you're likely to be able to tolerate yoghurt whereas you may not be able to tolerate cream.

I've found the 999 blue light diet to have been most effective. Another 6lb off.

Eating in hospital is EXTREMELY hard though. Starving is actually easier, just drinking tea/water and carrying on. I have butter if I need it, and brought boursin/philly, and a bit of salmon, there's a tesco down the road apparently so that might be a help. Will carry on with BC, might eat some of the apples I brought for DS.

We'll be here for the next week, and as i'm a LP, it's all me.

At least now I have wifi, so can MN properly.

DS is ok, he got burnt. Superficial, but to over 12% of his body. he's doing well. I sense this is the beginning of a journey and not the culmination of a bad thing that happened. They won't answer my questions, they say it's too early for them to answer them now. I'll be overloaded.

I'll join you Looking I could do with a good shred. I'm on my second run through so level 1 for the minute and can almost do half a press up

Nope, not really! It's just me. I'm a stately homer, so my family dynamics are 'intricate' that said, I have lovely friends, one of whom. Came to get me so I could get home and get my car (an hour's drive away)

Hoping to pull in favours when he's out though. I'll need help then. School mum's have all said let them know if I need anything. I think I need to learn how to accept that help.

Hissy best wishes for your ds and a good outcome. Ds was scalded as a toddler and spent a week on a burns unit 3 hours from home. He surprised them all by healing up very well, and now there is little to see. I think in the early days it can be difficult to know what the future holds.

It's between his chest, tummy, thighs and calves mostly, with the delicate bits between, :(

I'm hearing positive stories from a number of sources, I just have to hope he'll end up being one of them.
