Low-carb bootcamp

Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the hard work is over!

Morning all!

Well done everyone for getting through the first two weeks. Still a bit of carb flu around by the sound of it though. Remember it's really important to keep your electrolyte levels up, with all the water that we're drinking. This means plenty of salt!

I know we're all told to keep the salt down, but it's (yet another) thing when you're low carbing that runs counter to expectations. Cook with it, and put it on your food.

Here's a really good post about salt and why we need it

As well as sodium, we also need magnesium and potassium - salmon, spinach, avocado and (full fat) natural yoghurt are all good.

Bootcamp Light

So now, if you want to, you can move on to Bootcamp Light. The rules for this are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

(Oh, and don't forget [[www.mumsnet.com/bootcamp the Weight Tracker as well)

Essentially the differences are that you can, if you want, start to skip breakfast if you're not hungry - I know that lots of people have problems with eating first thing. By now you should have stabilised your blood sugar levels, so if you're not hungry in the morning (or at any other time of the day) you don't have to force yourself to eat. Just make sure you don't end up ravenous later on and without anything appropriately low carb to eat!

You can introduce some fruit - berries or rhubarb only (although bear in mind that rhubarb will need to be sweetened, which will mean using an artificial sweetener; stevia is probably the best one to use - brands are PureVia or Truvia.) But be careful not to go mad - it's an occasional thing, and in moderation!

Similarly with nuts and seeds. These can be introduced now as snacks, but go easy. They can quickly add lots of carbs to your diet. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest in carbs. And if in doubt, check the carb count on the back of the packet

And you can also introduce alcohol, but with the same warnings about moderation! Spirits like vodka and gin are the best, as these are low carb - drink them with sparkling water or - if you have to - slimline tonic. Champagne, dry white and red wine are allowed, but these do have carbs, so go easy.

The week 3 (or 4, or 5) stall

PLEASE NOTE! IT IS VERY, VERY COMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER AT THIS POINT.

This is to do with your body switching from carb-burning to fat-burning - StuntNun posted a really good post about this last week, I think, and I'll ask her to re-post. It is entirely normal and doesn't signal that you're doing anything wrong.

However - you may feel, knowing this, that you want to stay on Bootcamp for a bit longer. There is no problem doing that, as long as you are getting your carbs from vegetables and salad. You may want to consider doing Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

So good luck everyone! Here's to another good week Flowers

The poor lad Hissy, you must be in bits. When people are offering help just remember that you would do exactly the same if one of his friends needed help. People love to help out and feel that they've done something for you especially as we can so easily picture ourselves in the same situation. Please try and look after yourself too so that you're in the best shape to stay strong and look after him.

Hi Hissy,
Just wanted to send my sympathy. One of mine was burnt as a toddler and was in hospital. It looked horrible at first, but there is no scarring at all now apart from a tiny bit on his thumb.

Hope you are both ok x

Eeeek Hissy - how scary! Hope he's ok and if it's superficial burns only, that there's minimal to no scarring. x

Hi all!

1.25lbs down again this week. I know this is reasonable, but I would prefer it to be a wee bit faster given how huge I am at the moment, so I am continuing bc for now and cutting out all dairy and staying off the booze. It will be quite a challenge for me as a veggie, I think eggs and tofu are going to be my friends!

I feel slimmer even if it is not showing on the scales.Smile

Hissy - Hope your son gets better very soon x

Well after yesterdays drama - those 2lbs I put on? Came overnight & have vanished overnight. My body is weird. Going to continue uber bootcamp with minimal dairy for another couple days at least (going away BH weekend & have every intention of sticking to it, but will be harder than when my own kitchen is right here!

Flowers Hissy Hope your son is doing much better today.

Survived another social occasion. There was a yummy non bootcamp salad dressing and I don't know what 'sweet cure bacon steaks' means but think sugar may have been involved. However, it was a better choice than pizza and my coffee and cream was delicious.

In response to mayo oil I just use my usual light coloured olive oil. It tastes fine to me.

ImSoOverIt I know it's hard when the weight seems to be coming off slowly but remember the weight is coming off and without having to starve yourself. Weight loss is rate-limited, it just isn't possible to lose more than two pounds a week without some of that coming from your lean muscle mass. One advantage of slower weight loss is that it gives everything else time to catch up with the fat loss. If you lose weight too quickly you will be left with saggy areas that will take longer to shrink back into shape.

Just got back from a run, hopped on the scales. I'm still at the same weight I've been for the past 5 days, down to the .4 ounces... Echo your thoughts re the speed of loss imsooverit, very frustrating.
I'm staying on BC, perhaps digress as BIWI suggest to light over the weekend
Brew with cream of course!

Sorry hissy, hadn't had time to catch up as posted on the run - so sorry to hear about your son. I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Look after yourself too, whilst it may be tempting to eat not much at all, I think we would all forgive you the odd slip if carby stuff is all that's available - you need to keep you strength up so make sure you're eating something. x

I know I ought not to be impatient about the weight loss. I have noticed I am firming up and are less wobbly, whereas with other diets I go through a kind of deflated balloon stage where I am a bit flabby and wobbly.

I feel a bit "denser" iyswim? So I guess not necessarily lighter. I need to start taking measurements I think!

Hissy, best wishes to your ds. Good for you staying so strong though.

I'm 5.4lb off this week. Going to continue on boot camp for as long as possible. I'm finding it really easy apart from missing fruit.

I was wondering if people could post their success stories from previous attempts at bc? I have tried lcing twice before this, but gave up after what I now realise was the 3 week stall.

Perhaps if people posted ther long term experiences of it it might help those of us who are experiencing slow losses? Maybe start a new thread or I did start one about benefits of lcing? Or post here of course.

StuntNun · 20/05/2014 13:27

There is a success stories thread already iirc.

Wow Hissy my huge sympathies. Good luck.

Im so over it I can only urge somehow, the longer view. I am a success story of BIWI's bootcamp (more than 3 stone off, over 10 months). I started May last year and didn't own a set of scales until September. Therefore I can't tell you whether I stalled or not, or for how long. I actually used to look at my back fat in the bathroom mirror and very gradually, over many weeks, watched it reducing. I don't have any back fat now.

I know my "start weight" of 14 stone because at some point that summer, my doctors let slip that was the weight they had on record for me. (so really, I think I was probably more than that.)

When I got scales in time for the Sept bootcamp I was 176lb (12 and a half stone).

I'm now 10 stone 13 and normal BMI.

It was the point when the doctors weighed me and told me my previous weight that I realised I wasn't really just doing this for 10 weeks. It was really helpful to start with the "I'm doing this for 10 weeks" thought. But before the end of the May bootcamp I realised "I'm doing this until Christmas".

I am the queen of slow losses, my average rate of loss was 1lb a week (or less) - some weeks I gained weight instead. However fairly quickly, it all felt like an exciting journey into the unknown - a journey to lower weights I hadn't been for some time! Already by last summer I felt slimmer. So feeling slimmer and better is just around the corner.

I do also understand the psychology of daily weighing - cos that's what I did once I got scales! I think that was useful to notice the fluctuations that happen between each day and week. Also to notice whether things helped or hindered - eg nuts, dairy, drinking enough water etc.

But during the famous 3 week stall you do need that leap of faith that This Will Work (and it will.) and forget the scales for now.

Totally overwhelmed and not keeping up with you all - but hey you are all doing fab !

hissy sorry to hear about your little one. Children heal amazingly well and deal with situations with great resilience. thoughts are with you.

imsoover I echo what eva says. don't give up on a stall - I stalled for FIVE weeks last time , causing a name change to whooshfuckerfairy but with persistence a stone came off - which I was delighted with. As I am not that far from weight goal - my issues were similar trashy - watching portion size and addressing my snacking habit. I am a bit stuck again now - but I think I need to look at finer detail, like the tomato sauces I cook might be too carby, the sausages I eat - do I really only have a couple or is it more like 6 and is a whole head of roasted broccoli really necessary ..? delicious with anchovies

monkey - I am living on your aubergine/micey. cheesey thing - I love it ! and the thought of the jelly/cream combo makes me drool Grin Grin

Hallo losers!
1.5lb down here which amazingly has reached my goal for bootcamp which was to get under 10 stone. (am 5ft8) I haven't weighed this little since about age 22 and am now 36 so it feels pretty cool. Now to maintain & perhaps lose a little more.

Things I have noticed about my weight loss (lurked since Jan)

  1. initial water weight loss was good
  2. instead of 3 week stall, I stalled for about 2 months. I have hypothyroidism and I went cold turkey on carbs which isn't a good thing to do (since doing some reading) I also felt pretty crappy for a long time.
  3. skipping breakfast helped me
  4. not snacking helped me
  5. BClite at weekends does not mean drinking lots of wine fri/sat/sun Wink Wink
  6. water and fat are absolutely vital

Well done on everyone's losses this week and keep on keeping on those who have gained or sts. I implore you to take measurements - those numbers will help.

Hissy - thinking of you and your DS Thanks

KeepOn for a LC pregnancy I would follow Bootcamp Light but add in some 'safer' carbs such as apples, the odd slice of wholemeal bread, potatoes, sweet potato etc. You can probably eat as much dairy as you want seeing as you won't be trying to lose weight.
