Low-carb bootcamp

Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - the hard work is over!

Morning all!

Well done everyone for getting through the first two weeks. Still a bit of carb flu around by the sound of it though. Remember it's really important to keep your electrolyte levels up, with all the water that we're drinking. This means plenty of salt!

I know we're all told to keep the salt down, but it's (yet another) thing when you're low carbing that runs counter to expectations. Cook with it, and put it on your food.

Here's a really good post about salt and why we need it

As well as sodium, we also need magnesium and potassium - salmon, spinach, avocado and (full fat) natural yoghurt are all good.

Bootcamp Light

So now, if you want to, you can move on to Bootcamp Light. The rules for this are on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

(Oh, and don't forget [[www.mumsnet.com/bootcamp the Weight Tracker as well)

Essentially the differences are that you can, if you want, start to skip breakfast if you're not hungry - I know that lots of people have problems with eating first thing. By now you should have stabilised your blood sugar levels, so if you're not hungry in the morning (or at any other time of the day) you don't have to force yourself to eat. Just make sure you don't end up ravenous later on and without anything appropriately low carb to eat!

You can introduce some fruit - berries or rhubarb only (although bear in mind that rhubarb will need to be sweetened, which will mean using an artificial sweetener; stevia is probably the best one to use - brands are PureVia or Truvia.) But be careful not to go mad - it's an occasional thing, and in moderation!

Similarly with nuts and seeds. These can be introduced now as snacks, but go easy. They can quickly add lots of carbs to your diet. Almonds and macadamias are the lowest in carbs. And if in doubt, check the carb count on the back of the packet

And you can also introduce alcohol, but with the same warnings about moderation! Spirits like vodka and gin are the best, as these are low carb - drink them with sparkling water or - if you have to - slimline tonic. Champagne, dry white and red wine are allowed, but these do have carbs, so go easy.

The week 3 (or 4, or 5) stall

PLEASE NOTE! IT IS VERY, VERY COMMON FOR WEIGHT LOSS TO STOP ALTOGETHER AT THIS POINT.

This is to do with your body switching from carb-burning to fat-burning - StuntNun posted a really good post about this last week, I think, and I'll ask her to re-post. It is entirely normal and doesn't signal that you're doing anything wrong.

However - you may feel, knowing this, that you want to stay on Bootcamp for a bit longer. There is no problem doing that, as long as you are getting your carbs from vegetables and salad. You may want to consider doing Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

So good luck everyone! Here's to another good week Flowers

Morning all! Very impressed with all the fantastic losses.
3.5lbs on here, but expected and deserved as I was away on business. Starting 3 days of my own version of Ubercamp (no dairy, no caffeine, several swimming pool's worth of water), followed by proper Bootcamp.

Amazingly, having been off the leash last week, I honestly think my lifelong addiction to sugar is broken. Grin That alone is worth all the hard work.

Morning all,

Big commiserations to those struggling, I have stood in your shoes and cried those tears of frustration.

The way I thought myself out of it, was by trying convincing myself I was no longer Trashcan, and being a 'scientist' instead (I may have adopted an Einstein-y type inner monologue Blush) and I looked at the 'variables' of the previous week, and how I would 'tweak' them to achieve what I wanted. It eventually works.

I won't pretend I didn't want to stab something some most weeks when I didn't lose or gained. I put on half a stone when I started in Jan. It's ultimately about putting in the right things at the right times in the right amounts, and avoiding fuck it moments as they fuck your whole week.

Also remember a big loss carries over for weeks sometimes. You want to average about 2lbs weekly or less if you're close to goal. Anything more is unsustainable imo.

I also use the thread to try and re-learn, listened to my intuition - which was often right, but sometimes way out of wack.

Here I am now and since Jan when I hit almost 18 stone, I am 16.5lbs today (albeit with a little food poisoning this week, but hey ho)

Congratulations losers! o chuffed for everyone who's had success this week!

Thanks again BIWI you're a web lege Grin

And sayra for the spready updating! Oh, and a word on people 'noticing'
I lost 5 stone or so after I ballooned at uni. At first I had to tell everybody about how my diet was the way forward (lc then too). Then I naturally tailed off with the preaching, but still wanted people to see I was changing/slimming. Eventually I realised that I needed to say nothing, as the results would be too obvious.

Sure enough, a couple of stone off and the comments started. Lovely. Fast forward six months, and they kept coming, except it was a bit embarrassing now. It was all people said when they saw me. Then some where downright rude - not intentionally, but they'd say things like here she is, skinny minny etc. It became hard to tolerate. Try and hols on to the fact you're doing this for yourself only, and what other people think and say, uninvited, is of no importance!

Thanks trashcan. I really want to keep going so that in a few months/years this will be just a blip and a distant memory. Smile

you need to give it time, insulin resistance means it make take a little longer for your body to adapt. And you said last week that you feel better on this woe. Personally I haven't had an ulcer, IBS symptoms, period pains or pmt in months and it would be worth eating this way for that alone. Don't make me borrow BIWI's big stick to get you back in line.

Regarding dairy, the reason it can make some people stall is that it can cause an insulin spike if you're sensitive to dairy. Also some people can get away with dairy while they're overweight but not when they get close to goal. Like Jimmy my appetite is lower when I don't eat dairy.

Morning everyone, another 2lb down again this week for me Smile. Congrats to everyone who has lost, commiserations to those who are struggling.

I'm now technically on week 10 of doing bootcamp and can confirm what others have said in that sometimes you may see a stall or even a gain, especially in the next few weeks, but if you stick with it that will pass and the loss will pick up again. For me it was in week 6 rather than 3-5 which was a bit of a surprise to me as I wasn't expecting it but things did start moving again. Just keep going an maybe tweak things a little bit, make sure you're getting enough water, try reducing dairy and really concentrate on what you're eating. It can be easy sometimes to cheat without realising or just have something carby thinking 'one won't hurt' but if you aren't completely adapted to low carb it can re-set everything and you effectively end up having to start over, much easier to just say no in the long run Wink

I know the weight loss is a very attractive part of this way of eating, and I'm not going to deny it, one of the main motivations for me ( even though health is actually the main reason I do it as I was diagnosed diabetic last year), but when I am having a difficult or disheartening week I really try to be mindful of the fact that this is about much more than just the weight. It's about a much healthier way of living, about treating myself well and looking after my body and in turn, my mind. I want to be fab and fit at forty - only two years away now, how did that happen?! - not getting more and more unwell and unfit and unhappy. I'm playing the long game.

I know it's rough, but try to focus on the other benefits of this lifestyle.

Good luck this week. Hopefully the whoosh fairy has got our numbers.

For the first time on bootcamp I've gained. Bloody hell. That will be the free booze and food on FA cup final day then. Having said that. Three people told me how well I looked and I got asked on a date for the first time in years!

Minty sadly even that much can stall you though. I'm totally like that, I can have a perfect week, eat one wrong thing and I've stayed the same on the scales. This woe can be so unforgiving.

Trash thank you, that was really great to read.

I stayed the same this week despite being super careful Sad

However, I do feel healthy eating this way and I'm not really hungry so I will continue for another few weeks and see if the whoosh fairy visits (& hope TOTM is contributing to me holding onto some weight)

locarblil all three of the mains sound pretty good.

If the black pudding fritter is battered I would leave that, but a butternut squash purée shouldn't be too high in carbs. Maybe just eat half of it ( unless it's just a little portion).

Chicken, I would just eat half of the chickpeas.

The best one off the top of my head is the stuffed beef tomato (unless it's stuffed with rice, which is quite likely I guess). But I would really recommend you go for the option you fancy.

The best thing to do is concentrate on enjoying the protein component and eat less of the carby accompaniment.

HolgerDanske · 19/05/2014 10:54

Just realised the tomato might be stuffed with cheese and breadcrumbs. Might be better to skip that one. Chicken or pork, either one would be lush and fairly easy to leave out some of the carbs. I would go for the pork myself because I love pork tenderloin.

Obviously the cheese isn't a problem, more concerned about bad crumbs. Generally best to aim for natural carbs if you have to have some.

Hi,

After struggling the first 10 days in BC and actually putting on weight (was up to 174.6lbs last Friday) I am now down to 169.8lbs and LC since Friday. I am feeling much better now, depression is gone. Instead of looking backwards I am looking forwards and I look forward to my holiday in exactly one month. Well done to everybody on their weight losses.

But I was on holiday the previous week so I think a lot of that is the alcohol i drank in the sun.

Still means the holiday gain didnt become permanent as it usually does so yay!

Minty are you drinking your water? That's another thing I never did but as of last week I've been glugging it down and it's really made a difference to my weight loss.

Are you eating enough fat? I have realised on some meals that whilst I had protein and veg, the fat was minimal. This can be even trickier if you don't have dairy. I smother my veg in butter (Lurpak do a garlic butter stick which is lush). And this mayonnaise has become a staple for me.

morning losers!
just 1lb off here which i'm a little disappointed with tbh, i know i haven't had enough water this weekend though i haven't knowingly cheated, nor touched a drop of alcohol...

going to stay on bootcamp too, and maybe look at reducing dairy, which will be nigh on impossible as i could live on cheese alone. will be stricter about water intake and just keep on keeping on i suppose - congratulations to all who have had big losses and commiserations to those who have stalled/put on - the trend is our friend Smile
