ok finally Christmas is over

Slng, not keen on Ian McEwan, naval-gazer extraodinaire!

I had £2.50 in library fines yesterday, think I need to set an alarm or something to remind me to take them back.

slng · 04/03/2009 08:18

Morning!

Ros - agree there is a certain amount of navel-gazing. Have you read the cement garden though? Gave me nightmares. As for library books - we have two cards at ealing library and two at charing cross, and managing that is a bit of a full time job. At least children's accounts don't get fines ...

sfxmum · 04/03/2009 10:56

good morning all

looks much better than I expected out there dd seems to have taken a shine to the new nursery assistant and run towards her with a big smile barely saying bye

about libraries I don't have a card but dd does, I am weird about books I don't always read then straight sometimes pause for a couple of weeks, read something else etc not very good for fines, dd has one and we go regularly

about McEwan I quite like him, like Julian Barnes I love their writing more than the stories and just take huge pleasure in the flow of words, same as David Mitchell positively melt at some phrases, does that mean I am strange?

OP posts:
SJ99 · 04/03/2009 14:08

Afternoon all

Hope everyone well
I like McEwan's style of writing but I found Atonement quite disappointing & the ending was let down.

Have got Nokia phone now and I'm finding that annoying as I keep pressing the wrong keys as I'm used to a Sony!

Ros- too bad about fines.

Sfx - Course sounds good, like the idea of building modules, my uni degree was like that.

As for teething have booked Ds1 a dental appointment. Also spoke to my uncle so have a few more ideas re: allergies & growth advice to pursue.

No more issues re: sibling rivalry to report although I'm sure more to follow

mygreatauntgriselda · 04/03/2009 14:18

I use to lik Ian McK but he's let me down too often

mygreatauntgriselda · 04/03/2009 14:19

"used to like" I mean (keyboard)

rosmerta · 04/03/2009 14:57

auntie, I read that as 'used to lick' first time

Sj, glad you've got some more ideas for ds1. How's his nose?

Ds1 has done something today that brought tears to my eyes. He had 50p from gps at the weekend & today we popped out to the shops. He likes to look in the charity shop on the High Street, he picked up a baby book & asked to buy it for ds2. It was so sweet, I nearly blubbed in the shop .

sfxmum · 04/03/2009 15:25

Ros curb your hormones woman!e them both
(oh so sweet really)

dd is back to not eating and was super grumpy on way home from nursery, but I expect she will eat the lasagne am cooking later for dinner
she has also been wearing only dresses since Saturday

about IM I have not read Saturday or Atonement although I have them both
am about to finish my old feminist dystopia classic, it is great, then will have to dip into shortlist probably pick Netherland

OP posts:
sfxmum · 04/03/2009 15:28

meant to say SJ hope your uncle's suggestions lead to some answers

OP posts:
slng · 04/03/2009 17:44

SJ - what do you do with the whey when you make cheese?

SJ99 · 04/03/2009 20:24

Slng - you can use it for other cooking like a stock, it's full of nutrients don't chuck it away!

Thanks Sfx. Did DD's appetite perk up? We seem to be going through a vicious circle of being hungry but not eating as mouth hurts, then being tired as no energy, then being grumpy/fractious which then makes DS1 less likely to eat. It's a very testing time.

Ros - v. sweet of miniRos snr Nose still a bit bruised but not any worse thanks for asking

slng · 04/03/2009 21:12

SJ - so I can use the whey in, say, a carrot soup? I suppose it will be alright in the fridge overnight? I made some paneer today! Promised the kids we'll make it together some other time. Is DS1 refusing liquid food too? I've read Annabel Karmel recommending peanut butter in milkshake for extra protein. It sounds revolting, but perhaps kids like that sort of thing ...

sfxmum · 04/03/2009 21:30

slng when I make smoothies as a post run food I usually had some oats and a spoon of peanut butter plus berries, banana and soya milk, sometimes yoghurt too, it fills you up easy to digest

SJ sorry to hear it has been trying dd has been particularly fussy today even with lasagne at least dh was about to coax her he is infinitely more patient than I am when it comes to getting her to eat

OP posts:
sfxmum · 04/03/2009 21:30

mygreatauntgriselda · 05/03/2009 10:15

Ros thats soo cute

SFX I hated Saturday - completey implausable story line [humpphh!]

stepfordwife · 05/03/2009 14:38

hi all
hope everyone Ok and enjoying a sunny day
wish i was and not stuck behind my desk
good lord, you're talking tongues cooking, again...

sing..lent? it's an excuse to lose a bit of weight (giving up chocolate, cakes, etc) dressed up as religion.
well, talking for myself of course

sfxmum · 05/03/2009 14:57

hello all

hope everyone is well, lovely pretty day

at the risk of speaking in tongues again, am attempting French bread in the bread maker that sounds odd
hope it works to go with our ratatouille which in the case of dd gets whizzed into a reddish sauce

OP posts:
stepfordwife · 05/03/2009 15:30

sounds yum, sfx, my tummy is rumbling!

i know there's the school of thought that everyone can cook and if you can read a recipe you can cook, blah, blah, but i do reckon there are 'natural" cooks and er, not so natural cooks.

or maybe - speaking for myself - it's just laziness lack of confidence.
especially after not having a proper use of a kitchen for so long, i do aspire for the whole nourishing and nurturing thing of cooking good food for my children...

but if i hear another:'that's not how daddy does it" i'll lose the will to live

sfxmum · 05/03/2009 15:39

steppie we both get that on a variety of areas not just food, apparently I can't do eggs as well as daddy and I just have no idea how to do the library thing because that is daddy's job

as for cooking I can't always cook sometimes the mood is not right and that is the time for pasta and a jar of sauce

am trying to persuade dd to go to the swimming pool tomorrow as we have not been since last year, I think she was quite freaked by the going under water incident, she is already requesting lollipop

OP posts:
mygreatauntgriselda · 05/03/2009 19:08

Me too re the cooking

I'm more of a "warmer upper" than a cook

Mind you, I'm quite good at warming food up

slng · 05/03/2009 19:53

Had a good run in the park this afternoon. Kids asleep in about 5 minutes and me nodding off too, but kitchen is full of dirty dishes ... What to do what to do???

SJ - I used some of the whey for a savoury pancake this evening. Is that what one does?

sfxmum · 06/03/2009 08:46

good morning all

I think it is Kew for us today, too sunny to waste I think, and dd has been up since tht crack of dawn

Happy Birthday FT

Slng - yes I use why in any way possible, I don't have any rules! I've use dit in soup and just added a stock cube/extra seasoning to make it more flavoursome. How did the pancakes turn out?

Sfx - would love to join you but have just got back from dropping off DS. Enjoy the sunshine
