Mellow - man in chinese supermarket in Acton says Fielding is good ... Don't quite know whether he is an authority on such things or not!

Anyway how do you tell if a school is good or not? Perhaps you have to visit - I was told by a good authority that for primary school the most important thing is that the atmosphere is good! We visited our two nearest schools and they both seem fine, ofsted reports similar (ie both impenetrable), spoken to a few people who have children there and didn't hear anything very bad about either. We'll hear next month which school we get since we are about midpoint from both schools. Isn't it exciting.

mellow2 · 04/03/2008 11:05

slng,

Where is the Chinese supermarket in Acton?

sfxmum · 04/03/2008 11:24

good morning all

I see more talk of schools, my head hurts please stop

question
those of you with kids in proper beds, do you use bed rails/ guards?
dd keeps rolling out of her cot(it's a bedside one and that side is now broken, can't put it up)

dh says that the way they learn to stay in bed is to let them fall off a few times

hope you are all well today
extremely lacking in energy today just getting on with mundane boring home stuff here

slng · 04/03/2008 11:27

The chinese supermatket is between Acton town centre and Shepherds bush. I've even found out what it's called and its address:

Tung Hing
Cowley Road, Acton
London, W3 7XA

It's run by Malaysians.

Talking about Acton, the Tram depot is having an open weekend, for all you train fans big and small out there ... Here it is:

Btw what has happened to lemonaid? Has she changed name or something as I haven't "seen" her around here for ages. Although I think I may have actually seen her in Tescos this morning (or someone who looks remarkably like her).

slng · 04/03/2008 11:34

sfx - ds1 sleeps in the top bunk of a bunk bed put on ground level so he has rails all around except for about a foot or so where the ladder is supposed to be. First night he fell out of that small gap ... Hasn't done it since though.

Is it too early to be baking hot cross buns?

ComeOVeneer · 04/03/2008 11:42

sfx, neither of my 2 have anything on their beds. Both started off with the bed against the wall (dd's is now only with the head against the wall) and nothing to stop them falling out an neither of them ever have. Mind you having said that ds rarely sleeps in his bed, he is found more often than not asleep propping the door open with his head and feet on the stairgate (across the doorway to stop his wanderings/bath running/fishing goldfish out of tank etc in the early hours of the morning!

SushiMummy · 04/03/2008 11:45

sfx - DS sleeps in proper bed with a bed guard (we bought it from Mothercare). It doesn't cover the whole side of the bed but does the job.

CoV - doesn't she call herself PortAndLemon now?

sfxmum · 04/03/2008 11:51

thanks all one side should be against the wall but she moves around do much during the night I imagine she would hit the floor often.

regarding lemonaid I do believe she is around and nearing due date

the bed we originally ordered is being made any more. dh sems very keen on choosing the bed etc so am just letting him get on with it but she might be 3 before she moves

Kewcumber · 04/03/2008 11:52

DS is still in a cot and wearing a sleeping bag! I plan to give him a duvet at Easter when the weather is a bit warmer as he currently won't have anything on top of him (in fact often takes his sleeping bag off too). Once he's had a few weeks of getting used to a duvet I plan to transition him to a bed. Can I just take the side off the cot at first - has anyone tried that?

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 04/03/2008 11:54

Quokka used a travel side guard whcih seemed very good for her DS2 - I think I will do that too at least to start. Moving to a bed may be unsettling enough for my poor sleeper without adding falling out of bed to the mix in the first few weeks!

OP posts:
ComeOVeneer · 04/03/2008 11:55

As long as it doesn't leave any sharp bits exposed you can do that kew. DS used to unscrew one side of his cot and open it like a gate, whilst being very pleased with himself. No simple climbing out over the top like most children

ComeOVeneer · 04/03/2008 11:56

Or just put the matress on the floor for a while.

A portandlemon, thats right, but she hasn't been around for a bit has she?

sfxmum · 04/03/2008 11:57

KC the drop side of the bedside cot is now off and she just rolls into my bed over and over again, occasionally upside down.
on the odd occasion when she has slept without the grobag it all gets kicked away and she wakes up cold

Kewcumber · 04/03/2008 11:58

sfx - if I win this bid - do you want to pay half and have one? Obviously I'll go collect them - have bid up to £12.50 at the moment cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270215211220

SFX she sounds like my neice (5), she is a very rough sleeper, you can often hear her banging into the wall and frequently falls out of bed despite having a raised side on it (her bed is the lower of a set of bunkbeds with a built in side panel). Yet when she does, she never wakes up, my sister just pops her back in

Paddlechick666 · 04/03/2008 12:01

dd switched to a duvet before xmas iirc. she's still in her cot tho.

plan to convert cot into bed in a month or two. she sleeps on CM's bed with bedguard in the week adn in a readybed at Grandma's which she loves!

i've got a tomy bedguard which i used to use on my bed when we co-slept. plan to put dd's bed against the wall on one side adn use bed guard on the other.

just spoke to my local school of choice adn dd is not eligible for entry into the nursery till Sept 09 when she will be nearly 4yrs , guess will be same for Gherkin QC.

they are building a new children's centre and that will house the new nursery education facility and all in all it sounds great. i will visit in Oct and put her name down for entry in 09.

I am in catchment so should get a place okay.

that's if i haven't moved again, neighbours are keeping me awake most nights these days. i think he must be on the phone as it's generally just him talking quite loudly. doesn't seem sufficient to make a complaint about but i am exhausted!

Kewcumber · 04/03/2008 12:07

YEs Paddle if I can't get him a place at local nursery (put their names down at 1 dontcha know - ffs its not bloody eton!) then I'll send him to the montessori - which is expensive but not mindnumbingly expensive 3 afternoons a week from this sept then try to get him into Wyndham (completely free) 5 days Sept 09. hahahahaha - yeah right!

i like the ikea extendable beds like this cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ikea-extendable-childs-bed_W0QQitemZ260217012656QQihZ016QQcategoryZ122763QQssPageName ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

but, i suspect that by the time dd outgrows her cotbed she will be ready for a standard single that might see her thru to teens.

good lord! i have just realised i will have a teenager in about 10yrs!

Paddlechick666 · 04/03/2008 12:11

they're funded from birthday this year tho aren't they? or does montessori not take funded kids?

i think dd's pre-school does so i'll be looking to increase her time where she is now until 09/09.

it works for my CM and i'd like to keep her there as long as poss.

not sure what i'll do once she goes into nursery as it's 5 days per week but only morning or afternoon. change my working hours i s'pose

sfxmum · 04/03/2008 12:11

KC dh just does not do ebay for dd, sorry
I think he feels he has not been doing enough with dd lately and wants to plan her bedroom, then show it to her TA DA! oh well staying out of it just lobbying for some sort of bed guard

paddle sorry about the awful neighbours. has time waster boss been in touch? gave any explanation?

COV - dd sometimes sleeps very soundly and quietly, but some nights it is like she dances and runs in her sleep

Kewcumber · 04/03/2008 12:12

Paddle I think that bed fully extended is IKEAs standard single size - a little narrower than Uk ones and a littel longer so I think it would last you into teen years if necessary (its pretty I like it - would look lovely with some pink fairy-type netting hanging over it)

my mum asked me if I was planning to buy twin beds to put DS in after Easter. Errrr why twin beds? And anyway I kept my spare small (2'6") bed so he can have that. She thinks I should buy twin beds now in case I adopt again. So I should buy two bes I don;t need so that in about 4 years time a possible imaginary child2 will have a matching bed to DS . SOmetimes I wonder what planet she's on.

SFX - I will taunt you with my lovely cheap spare bed rail!

PAddle can;t CM do pick up for you 3 days when DD is in nursery 5 days? I know you wouldnt save money but it seesm the simplest option. That what I have planned though "afternoons" may scupper that.

Ys they do get funded about £8 per session from JAn after thier 3rd birthday in Richmond, montessori will take that but tis 3 sessions at about £20 per session so will have to find £36 per week over what I pay now. Possibly could reduce one afternoon at CM and get my mum to pick him up one extra day...

I think it is the grandparents prerogative to overindulge the kids and drive parents to distraction

KC pink fairy lights? have you been talking to dd?

just heard in the news of 2 separate incidents of men trying to abduct young girls is there something in the water?
