Just in case anyone hasn't found out yet - especially as the GCC website has fallen over - all Glasgow schools are shut today.

No reason why teachers cannot help out at their local schools if they can't travel to one further away. Schools closing is a nightmare for working parents as it is a struggle to find babysitters day after day. Glasgow Council - get our schools opened please!

sammac · 08/12/2010 14:18

Aw shucks- am so chuffed to be remembered here- thanks!

It's actually my aunt that I'm dealaing with- she's also in Clydebank, in the Hospice there, after spending most of this year in and out of Gartnavel and the Western. And of course, there's other family complications to add to the mix, which I won't go into.

I may well be passing your dad PB, although it's mostly at night that I'm out. Sorry to here about your mum, I know she was a strong woman from yur posts- although I can't remember her from school.

Everybody wants schools opened and back to normal, but the big picture needs to be looked at. The Police are saying not to travel as the roads are treacherous- anyone can see that. Pavements are a nightmare for accessing the schools too. Schools are not babysitters.

I drove to Silverburn from Pollokshields: even St Andrews Drive and Dumbrek Road were still nightmare-ish. I'm (if I say so myself) relatively proficient at driving on snow and ice - and even I was nervous. Even main roads are still icebound and are badly rutted with chunks of ice which could easily cause cars to swerve. The temperature is too low for salt to work.

I know it was on police advice that the schools were shut today: I honestly don't see that anything has changed. Imagine the outcry if they were to re-open and a teacher or :( a child was killed as a result of trying to get to school in the snow and ice.

prettybirdinapeartree · 08/12/2010 14:27

Literally just updated on GCC's twitter site: Glasgow school will remain closed tomorrow, 9th December.

Glasgow City Council have asked teaching staff to report to their nearest school. Staff are meant to be in today. All other councils have closed to staff and pupils.
