Just in case anyone hasn't found out yet - especially as the GCC website has fallen over - all Glasgow schools are shut today.

from the BBC website

The following Glasgow City Council schools and nurseries will be closed to pupils on Friday:

all Additional Support for Learning schools and units, Barlanark Family Learning Centre, Battlefield Primary, Bellrock Nursery School, Bridgeton Family Learning Centre, Broomhill Primary Annexe, Budhill Family Learning Centre, Burnbrae Early Years Centre, Camstradden Primary, Carntyne Primary, Castlemilk Family Learning Centre, Chesters Nursery, Chirnsyde Primary, Cleeves Primary, Cranhill Primary, Dalmarnock Primary, Drumchapel Family Learning Centre, Eastbank Primary, Glasgow Gaelic School, Hillington Primary, Ibrox Primary and Nursery Class, Kelvindale Primary, Lamlash Nursery School, Langa Street Nursery, Langside Primary, Laurieston Day Nursery, London Road Nursery School, Lourdes Primary and Nursery Class, Lyoncross Nursery, Miller Primary School, Miltonbank Primary, Our Lady of Peace Primary, Pollokshields Early Years Centre, Pollokshields Primary, Royston Primary, St Albert's Primary, St Clare's Primary, St Maria Goretti Primary, St Stephen's Primary, St Vincent's Primary, Thornlaw Nursery School, Tinto Primary, Westerhouse Nursery School and Whiteinch Primary.

Staff from the above schools and nurseries should report to their headteachers.

The council is aiming to have all repairs to burst pipes and other issues resolved, there may be some instances where this is not possible.

In these cases, it may be necessary to close some schools or nurseries at short notice.

Parents should check the council website and the council's Twitter page.

In addition, advice from the bus companies and taxis is that there will be no dedicated school transport.

For those in Glasgow whose kids were back at school today, what were the access roads like to the school?

The only way to get to ds' school safely was to walk in the middle of the road Shock The pavements were rutted ice covered with a thin layer of water so therefore impossible to stay upright on.

Ds (P6) ususally walks to and from school on his own but because we knew the roads and pvements were in really bad condition, today we accompanied him. Dh came back from taking him abosultely fizzing.

Not only was the lollipop man not there because the closest school is shut (stragne gog's leg catchment: ds goes to his catchment school, yet to get there, needs to cross the road close to the other primary school, which is actually closer to us) but the hill that the kids had to walk down to get to school was sheet ice. Dh saw two kids and two adults fall heavily while walking on the road - which was actually less slippy than the pavement. Shock The only pavement that was gritted was the one directly outside of the school.

I picked ds up - and had to walk down the middle of our road (relatively quiet so not too much of an issue - but not something a 10 year old should do on their own) and then walk down (and back up) a much busier road (the one where dh saw people falling in the morning), again on the road as it is on a hill and the pavement was impossible to walk on.

I walked with a six year old, 4 year old and baby in a pram. In the middle of the road. It was interesting trying to stagger on to the pavement whenever a car appeared.

Our lollipop lady was furious, saying it was too dangerous for pedestrians and schools should have remained closed.

I should imagine A&E was busy today.

prettybirdinapeartree · 10/12/2010 19:19

It was positively negligent (which is what dh has written in his tirade to our councillor). I am so Angry that I have ended up posting in AIBU Grin
