An M1 visa is a one-year student visa for non-academic training. You can't work on it.

mananny · 18/03/2008 12:38

No idea about M1's UR. Are you looking at options? Could you afford to go the F1 route and do a Masters? Then qualify for E2 green card which is current, although you have to ensure you can actually get a job that requires the Masters as it's entry point. It's still a long-ish and expensive route (I speak from experience LOL) but it is the only way a v expensive lawyer said I can stay here

dodgykeeper · 18/03/2008 13:28

Glad that St Partick's Day is over; it was just embarassing! I am the first person in my entire extended family not to be born and raised in Ireland so Ive experienced a true St Patricks day all my life. The American version was truly awful. So many things that annoyed me like 4 leaf clovers everywhere - wrong plant; how hard is it to count to three!!!!!!!! People calling it St Patty's day - fuck off! My dds class learned God Save the Queen at music for the occasion - its just off the scale. Also in Ireland it was officially moved to the weekend so it didnt fall during Holy Week.
Vent over.
Hope youre doing better anaorak. When I am bored and dh is away, I download lots of British telly from sites like thebox. You can get everything including the soaps, QI, dramas, comedy etc. Can I recommend any of the Dave Gorman stuff. The first one is where he tried to meet 54 other people called Dave Gorman for a bet. He also tried to travel from the West coast to the East coast of the USA without giving any money to large corporations (so using independent hotels, resaurants and gas stations). It was really good. Im watching Jonathan Creek tonight.

UnderRated · 18/03/2008 17:28

[shock[ at St Patrick's day confusion at your DD's school, dodgykeeper. Two people argued with me yesterday when I mention that Ireland officially moved it so it didn't fall during Holy Week.

thebox sounds good - I will google it now. I really enjoyed Dave Gorman's books - what is the name of the thing where he traveled accross the USA? That sounds interesting.

An F1 would be much better, but I can't afford to do a Masters - I was looking into massage therapy but I would need an M1 which, as scienceteacher says, means I can't work so can't afford the course. Grrrr.

All wet and miserable here. Am toying with the idea of making crumpets for tea but it sounds a bit messy and I'm feeling short-tempered so probably not the best day to try.

anorak · 18/03/2008 18:16

Thanks for the tip about thebox, will have to have a look at that.

I sent DS (7) to school in a green St Patrick's day hat yesterday. His name is Patrick and his daddy is Irish. He is def in the minority - I know of one other Irish child in his school (there may be more) and I think there are only two white children in his class - I thought they might enjoy the fun of it and probably all try on his hat. But he said none of them were really interested and they all thought he was stupid although he sometimes likes to overdramatise what a bad day he's had

Pavlovthecat · 18/03/2008 18:20

LOL at the irish being no really irish. I had a conversation with a third generation californian yesterday who states he is half italian and half scottish because his grandfather was born in Italy and his mother parents or grandparents were born in scotland! He said in the same sentance that he was half italian and third generation Californian!!!!

mananny · 18/03/2008 18:34

Yeah I love it when they say "ooh I'm three quarters English and half Cherokee plus I'm about a third Swedish too....."
my response is "yeah and you're fabulous at maths also"
to which they beam widely and accept me as their new bff. Sarcasm is wasted on them. LOL.

Pavlovthecat · 18/03/2008 18:42

LOL!

My DD has ate chinese food cooked by chinese people for last week, and can hold chopsticks in almost the correct manner, and can say two words of sanghaiese (sp), that defintely makes her a part chinese baby! esp as her cousin is half chinese. Makes no difference that she has blond hair blue eyes, half irish mother (real half irish no pretend) and a us/brit father!

Pavlovthecat · 18/03/2008 18:56

sorry what awful grammer - should say 'has eaten' not has ate!

dooneygirl · 18/03/2008 21:26

Shaken, but not stirred, UR. Big shock, but not anyone I was really close to or did much with outside of work. Just really calculating and chilling.

So today I have been doing not much at all. I downloaded songs from all my CD's to I-tunes so I can play them on the computer without having to change disks all the time.

I totally ignored St. Patrick's Day yesterday. They did the Easter party for Colin's school, because it was the last day before spring break.

UnderRated · 18/03/2008 23:00

I love that advert, Califrau. It always makes me smile - it is such a stereotype: going all out on something without knowing all the facts but my friends don't see that side of it.

Your DD is doing well with the chopsticks, Pavlov. DS insisted on having them at lunchtime but ended up poking his food and using his fingers. I might get hos some of those trainer-ones that are joined together.

Glad you are ok, dooney. Must be very unsettling.

Your poor DS, Anorak. I hope he is ok. You'd think that the others would be intrigued by something a bit different.

I just looked at thebox but you have to be invited to join

I wonder how sittingbull is.

fatbetty · 20/03/2008 14:36

Hello All! I was wondering if I could join this thread even though I'm not in the US (yet!). We are thinking about moving to the US from England....actually, I should say we ARE, but having trouble getting my head around it all....which is very strange as I'm American and my DH is British (you'd think I would be pushing to go back!). We would be moving back to Colorado (originally from there) and just wanted to chat and advice on moving over. Was easier for me to move over when I was married 9 years ago and without children or a house. Now we have three kids and a lot of stuff to bring along with us. sigh It's depressing thinking about it. Did anybody else feel this way?

Sorry for just jumping in here, as I haven't read much of the thread so far.

Ooo, hello fatbetty. Welcome.

It is daunting, isn't it? Colorado sounds lovely - Alipiggie is very happy there. When will you be moving?

fatbetty · 20/03/2008 21:26

We are in the process of getting DH Visa. We are waiting for our appointment at the Embassy - and have to get my US taxes finalised (haven't done them since being in the UK - going on 9 years now! Oops!). DH is eager to put the house up on the market, but I'm still dragging my feet a bit. Feel quite content here and have finally made some good friends. Moving house is such a big deal - but moving countries sounds like a nightmare!!! But can see the financial benefits as the UK is expensive - and Colorado is lovely. Were any of you this ambivilant about moving? I suppose once we move it will be fine. It's just the not knowing I suppose. We would be moving without DH having a job (IT contractor - so not too difficult to get a job) and would live with my family until we found a place to live. Can see a very stressful time ahead of us.

UnderRated · 21/03/2008 00:13

I moved with great trepidation but am not a good person to talk to about all this. Most people on this thread will tell you how happy they are to be over here and several vow never to live in the UK again.

The Embassy is pure torture. Do not take children. Expect to stand in a queue for HOURS and HOURS no matter what time you appointment was meant to be. Take a book. And lots of patience. And a sense of humour, but keep it to yourself. And, whatever you do, don't roll your eyes when security make you drink your sealed bottle of water to prove that it is nothing more sinister.

dooneygirl · 21/03/2008 02:34

Hi Betty. Hopefully Ali comes along soon for you.

It is a torrential hail downpour here. Very odd. The ground got covered with quite a bit of small hail in just a few minutes. It sounds really bad on the skylights.

UnderRated · 21/03/2008 02:52

RL seems to claimed Ali. I think she's busy these days Hope she pops back soon.

Expat knows about Colorado too but if you lived there before you probably know what you need to.

Anyone seen Anorak? Or heard from SittingBull?

OOOOOh I'm here. You mean I'm not going to be the only Mumsnetter in CO. Welcome. Wherabouts in CO are you going to move to Fatbetty. I'm now in Boulder and I LURVE it. I was very ambivalent about moving over here. It's the most wonderful place in the world. You can always CAT me or alternatively email me on asmits at spyder dot com and I'll answer all your questions. I can help with locations, schooling answer any other questions you want.

Hi all. Very busy with work, and my volunteer stuff and the boys of course. Sigh, as for the "real" life fun activities not much. Boys have a better social life than I do.

And before I forget HAPPY EASTER to one and all. Have a few hot cross buns/choccie eggs for me.
