Wrongly accused of shoplifting and harrassment.

JenniferBooth · 19/08/2025 13:13

Ive been maliciously accused of shoplifting. By a woman in a well known news store currently undergoing a name change. This was last month on Saturday 26th July. This was followed by someone posting false accusations about me on social media Ive reported it to the police under the Malicious Communications Act AND IVE BEEN GIVEN A CRIME NUMBER It escalated on Sunday 17th August where a man ive never met before "confronted" me in another shop (supermarket corner shop) calling me a shoplifter and repeating the same shit from last month. Ive updated the police as its harassment. Ive never shoplifted in my life. Ive got piles and piles of carrier bags from this news store and have spent a lot of money there since my teens (im now in my fifties) I was ringing solicitors yesterday but havent found one to handle a case like this.

Just a couple of points (from someone who works in retail).

You can't go into a shop and demand to see the CCTV. We can only hand it over to the police (or other services). We are not allowed to show it to anyone who comes in off the streets.

And a shop can ban customers for any reason at all. You can be banned if we don't like your shoes, or the way you cough. Obviously they tend not to, because we want to make money, but the shop is entirely within its rights to deny you service for a made up, invented or spurious reason.

Provided it's not discriminating against a protected characteristic..

A protected characteristic doesn’t work as a force field to prevent you being treated the same as everybody else.

I think @NorfolkandBad means that a shop can't refuse to serve you because, for example, you're in a wheelchair.

I dont. Im not techy minded enough unlike DH who is talking about me weariing a body cam

A bodycam to prove what? It's ridiculousness like this, writing to the CEO of a company over a non-issue, claiming that you've been falsely accused of shouting in shops then ranting and typing in ALL CAPS at people on here that has the majority of people on this thread not taking you seriously OP.

murasaki · 19/08/2025 17:55

Well quite, I've apologised for thinking she was the other poster, as I was wrong, but that doesn't mean I think she's being reasonable or that it happened as said.

You’re amazing ❤️

I don't think that is amazing, unless I've missed it chat got seems to have made up that the allegations have been investigated and disproved

How could anyone prove that someone didn't stuff magazines down their top?

JenniferBooth · 19/08/2025 19:25

Elektra1 · 19/08/2025 14:58

The police don’t have time to deal with nonsense like this. You need to calm down. The appropriate course of action would be to go through Facebook’s take-down process and get them to remove the offending posts.

I was harassed in a shop about this by a man on Saturday There are more forms of harrassment than just sexual you know!

Its a breach of the Malicious Communications Act 1988 and the Communications Act 2003. Its not a non issue

@Sodastreamin @TheCurious0range if it's a store in the High Street or Shopping Centre then they are now TGJones - a separate company to WHSmith.
However not all have had their signs changed yet though but they are TGJones now.
@JenniferBooth so a member of the public accused you.
Did the staff member check your bags? Call security to check? Was it the store manager?

@JenniferBooth
I think you need to do the following.
Speak to the actual store manager (arrange an actual meeting).
Contact the admin of the Facebook group to remove any posts.
If random bloke says "are you the WHSmith shoplifter" say "no I am not" and don't engage with him anymore.
If it's the store manager who has banned you then you could go further to their head office but remember it's TGJones you have to contact as they have taken over the shops.

Its Modella Capital

@JenniferBooth I'm still confused who posted the Facebook post.
Do you think it was the TGJones staff member? I doubt they'd risk their job by doing that?
Was it actually the manager who accused you?

The Anonymous Partcipant option was used.

Edited

Yes.... that's what I said 🤷
They are now two separate retailers one called WHSmith and one called TGJones.
Although not all TGJones branches have had their signs changed as that can't happen literally overnight.

Theunamedcat · 19/08/2025 20:27

JenniferBooth · 19/08/2025 20:18

Admin will know exactly who that is

Needmorelego · 19/08/2025 20:28

JenniferBooth · 19/08/2025 20:17

Its Modella Capital

That's the overall owner. They are an equity firm - not a retailer.
They also own other retailers (Hobbycraft is one).
It would be TGJones's head office you would need to contact.

Lol at the CEO of a major corporation conducting an internal investigation into why a customer was accused of shoplifting.

The CEO doesn’t monitor their own inbox, his staff will, who will forward that email to their customer relations team, who will likely look at this and send it back to the store manager, who will look at it it pass it down to one of the floor managers to respond. You do get action that way, as customer relations usually put pressure on the shop staff but they will likely investigate if an employee is accused of essentially spewing out confidential information (theft in store, someone asked to leave - all confidential internally unless a bystander had witnessed it), and that could be misconduct.

However, that’s if it actually happened as the story has been told…. I just cannot see a random employee doing this, unless of course there was a personal vendetta. Next thing you know OP took her man or something like that

Ok I hear you.
But some things I can’t quite understand. How would she know your name to find you online to post those things? Do you know her? You don’t give names for any service in a WHSmith so she can’t have looked you up.
