JenniferBooth · 19/08/2025 13:13

Ive been maliciously accused of shoplifting. By a woman in a well known news store currently undergoing a name change. This was last month on Saturday 26th July. This was followed by someone posting false accusations about me on social media Ive reported it to the police under the Malicious Communications Act AND IVE BEEN GIVEN A CRIME NUMBER It escalated on Sunday 17th August where a man ive never met before "confronted" me in another shop (supermarket corner shop) calling me a shoplifter and repeating the same shit from last month. Ive updated the police as its harassment. Ive never shoplifted in my life. Ive got piles and piles of carrier bags from this news store and have spent a lot of money there since my teens (im now in my fifties) I was ringing solicitors yesterday but havent found one to handle a case like this.

the towns local fb page

Is there not a moderator of the page or an administrator? Reach out to them and tell them that it's not true and ask them to remove it.

The man who approached you - was he a member of the public, or an employee of another shop?

He was a member of the public. He was very early 20s by the look of him. The woman who works in WH Smith who accused me was maybe late 30s early 40s.

So has the shop released your photo on social media? The sequence of events is really confusing.
Someone posted the shoplifting accusation on social media and now random strangers approach you on the street?

And threaten the group moderator with police too

@Sodastreamin @TheCurious0range if it's a store in the High Street or Shopping Centre then they are now TGJones - a separate company to WHSmith.
However not all have had their signs changed yet though but they are TGJones now.
@JenniferBooth so a member of the public accused you.
Did the staff member check your bags? Call security to check? Was it the store manager?

Flamingoknees · 19/08/2025 14:53

Not one of those posters bullying OP today, would be so cocky and amused if they were the ones being wrongly accused in 2 shops and on social media.
It's really not surprising that these bullies have not also been thanked for their politeness and custom in any if their local shops!
I'm sorry that you've posted for support OP and instead found yourself bullied and ridiculed.

I’m trying to understand what’s going on here?

If I’ve understood correctly:

  1. you were asked to leave a WH Smith because they thought you were shoplifting
  2. An anonymous person who you believe to be someone who works at this store has posted information about this incident on social media
  3. Random stranger in a shop came up to you and started repeating the same allegations?

So many questions!

  1. on what basis were you asked to leave the shop?
  2. How do you know the anonymous participant worked for the shop?
  3. Did this person post your name, photograph etc on social media?
  4. How did random person know that you were the same person as the person in the social media post?

I thought tge OP assumed the person posting in FB would the shop assistant because shop assistant was adamant that she had been shoplifting for a long time in different shops and I assume had been repeating that on FB.
If whoever put the claim in FB also put a link to the OP FB, then you can easily see how any vigilantes would then start pointing fingers. (Or a photo etc…)

It would feel quite similar to the recent OP who had issues with a pub putting a photo of people leaving wo paying but having them incl in the photo - resulting in people assuming it’s the OP who left wo paying.

Otherwise I’m a bit at loss.

IF this is what happened, I can see why it would be an issue - imagine people in your community thinking you’re a thief when you’re not! Or starting to harass you when out and about….

Needmorelego · 19/08/2025 14:55

@JenniferBooth yes but have staff actually accused you and banned you from the shop?

Was it the manager? Did they check your bags and see they were mistaken?

MushroomQueen · 19/08/2025 14:58

I can see you’re getting upset. Realistically I think you should report the fb comments as untrue. I think actually doing something with the law and the woman is probably pointless despite being frustrating. Anyone asks just calmly say that’s not true and go about your day.

Elektra1 · 19/08/2025 14:58

The police don’t have time to deal with nonsense like this. You need to calm down. The appropriate course of action would be to go through Facebook’s take-down process and get them to remove the offending posts.

Hello everyone, the OP of this thread and the OP of the Boots thread are not the same. So perhaps we can get this thread back on track now that this has been clarified.

Interesting - I worked for M&S in the Food Hall, we had very very regular customers and M&S did not send Christmas cards to them...

We get a Christmas card from a Hire Car company In Portugal we use roughly 3 times a year
I also got an invite to Flower arranging and nibbles at our local Sainsburys once
😊

Abouttoblow · 19/08/2025 15:24

A huge number of posters on this thread need to take a long, hard look at themselves.
I don't believe all of you who've been complete arseholes would be happy being falsely accused of anything.

Just because you can access the Internet doesn't mean you should.

LittleMi55Nobody · 19/08/2025 15:27

Do you go in with pots and decant samples of Puzzler and Hello to take home?

Sorry but as an aside, I love your username. That was the best Eurovision entry ever!
