4 high quality embryos at day 3 - what should I expect at day 5?

Mid way through our first cycle of IVF. They retrieved 6 eggs and 4 fertilised. The embryologist called me on day 3 and said all 4 embryos were high quality (at least 10 cells and minimal fragmentation) and so they could keep them until day 5 or 6. I am due an update tomorrow am and probably ET tomorrow afternoon or Friday (day 5 or 6) and just trying to set my expectations for the news tomorrow. How many usually die between day 3 and 5? If we do have at least one left, what are my chances of it sticking? I've gotten so pessimistic that I've sort of ruled out it working. Should I assume it's not doing to work or should I be more hopeful?

I know what you mean about not getting too excited. I don't think that chemicals are any more common with IVF. You just don't know about them in a natural cycle so it might seem that way. When we were trying naturally, I wasn't even going to test until my period was late (and it has never been late by more than a day for 3 years :D)

I think a lot of women don't bother testing early so they wouldn't know of a short chemical. I was talking to a friend who's pregnant and she's never even heard of chemical pregnancies!

Goodluckjonathan76 · 18/10/2017 14:04

Yes, I think so too JoJo.

Will you keep testing every day to make sure line gets darker? I was supposed to go in for a blood test at the clinic on Monday as the test that did on the day of the ET showed that my white blood cells were a bit high. I missed the appointment as was tied up at working but guessing I should get checked out.

Having all sorts of weird feelings about this now it's actually happened including guilt about the impact on DSs. They've said they don't want a sibling, mainly as my ex had a baby with his new partner 2 years ago so they already have a half brother. Will be so weird not to be just their mummy. Always felt that the 3 of us were a unit, even when I remarried. I really feel like I am betraying them by having another baby. They will also be 10 and 8 if/when the baby is born so won't play/hang out together. Maybe it's just my loony pregnancy hormones kicking in.

Also, does anyone know when is is safe to start having conjugal relations again? The clinic said 2 weeks which seems like yonks.

OP posts:
JoJoSM2 · 18/10/2017 14:37

Not sure about conjugal relations but feels like yonks too... I also miss hot baths.

I hope your boys get their head around the idea. There is 8 years between my nieces and surprisingly, they do play together and the older one finds the younger one good fun and amusing (most of the time, anyway).

When I tested today, the line came up within 30secs and was much stronger than yesterday. I have another, slightly less sensitive test at home so might try that tomorrow. I'm going away on Friday so I'll probably take one of those digital ones with weeks' indicator to see if it goes up next week.

Twickerhun · 18/10/2017 15:12

Congrats Goodluck that's an awesom result.

I was told no sex for three days, and no hot baths for the same period.

I have similar age step children to your children. They weren't impressed at DS when he was born early last year but they like him now and they do actually play together. It took about 5 months for them to warm to him, he was just annoying at first!

Twickerhun · 18/10/2017 15:12

Oh and I got a lot very strong line this morning, definitely positive today!

JoJoSM2 · 18/10/2017 15:45

Amazing news all around! Congrats Twickerhun!

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2017 15:46

Congrats

I was told no sex or baths for minimum 12w by clinic

Goodluckjonathan76 · 18/10/2017 16:34

Blondes, is that 12 WEEKS? They cannot be, surely?

OP posts:
Twickerhun · 18/10/2017 16:34

Are any of you guys on progesterone suppositories? Any idea how long you have to take them for?

Twickerhun · 18/10/2017 16:35

Blondes your clinic is no fun.

Goodluckjonathan76 · 18/10/2017 17:02

I am on progesterone suppositories (crinone and cyclogest), 2 twice a day. I think you have to take them for 12 weeks. I am also still taking oestrogen tablets 3 x a day and clexance injection at night but think there are only for 21 days.

My friend who did ivf at another clinic from me was also advised no sex for 12 weeks like @Blondeshavemorefun she said she was too scared before then anyway!

JoJoSM2 · 18/10/2017 18:10

I have just read through the pack from my clinic - 'gentle intercourse' after a couple of weeks.

I'm on Cyclogest too - I think until 12 weeks or sth.

When is everyone going for blood tests?

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2017 19:25

Yep. 12w to lower risk of mc. I then ended up having a low placenta and advised by big cheese doc not to have sex or may cause ruption

So no sex all time I was preg and horney

Some may say I was over causious but after ttc for 10yrs and 4 failed previous ivf and spent £27k and never had a bfp or been preg , then you listen to what important doctor tells you when you finally get preg

Twickerhun · 18/10/2017 20:05

Blondes I'm sorry to read your ttc journey. X

JoJoSM2 · 18/10/2017 20:39

Blonds, that was a journey to hell and back for you... How did you find your pregnancy? We’re yoy able to relax and enjoy it or did you keen on worrying?

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2017 21:20

sure you want to know .......

not a great preg, i suffered from hg and on medication, survived it tbh as daytime kept quite/still/slept and by 1/2pm felt better tho still very sick and queasy - luckily work nights as a maternity night nanny

was sick 20/30 times a day

last 7/8w i suffered edema, bad water retention and swelled up and only things i could wear were huge flowing dresses/skirts and slippers 2 sizes too big for me

then as was being induced (which took 3 attempts and bloody painful having a hand up your bits when cervix isnt dilated) ended up pre eclampsia and after a gruelling 60hr labour where i was contracting but cervix not opening, due to being induced at 39.4 due to age (43 and ivf) sure dd wanted to be a 42wer

placenta wouldnt come away in parts and 10m after giving birth i was rushed off to surgery to have remainder scraped out and to try and stop bleeding

lots tons of blood and needed 3 blood transfusions

but

im a mummy - so all worth it but would never do preg again lol

dd is now wonder 6,5mth old and tbh has been the perfect textbook baby, slept through early on and is a chilled happy bubbs

routine routine routine is my free advice to all once baby is here x

Goodluckjonathan76 · 19/10/2017 12:57

Sorry to hear your story Blondes. What a nightmare! But at least you are a mummy now.

So, I did another HPT at work this morning but this time bought the 2 for £8.99 pack from Boots, not the First Response I tested with yesterday. Had a heart attack when line took several minutes to apppear and was still quite faint though definitely there. Doesn't seem to be darker than yesterday. Is that a bad sign or just a less sensitive test?

Just went for blood test at clinic and was chatting to nurse. I mentioned the positive test and she said it's way too early to tell!?? My clinic say not to test until 16 dp5dt!!! Which I think would be 28th!

OP posts:
JoJoSM2 · 19/10/2017 13:37

I tried the Boots test today too. From reading about it, the FRER is sensitive to concentrations of 6.3 and the Boots test requires 15 units (whatever they are).

I’m going for a blood test later today but the nurses refused to let me test - it was a few emails later that they agreed!

I think they discourage people from testing so early to avoid upset over short chemicals. If you don’t test till 16d later, you wouldn’t even know... Plus, the levels this early are so low that they can get women worried... I’m going to do bloods just out of curiosity, anyway Grin And I’ve just purchased digital tests with weeks indicator to take on hols tomorrow.

Goodluckjonathan76 · 19/10/2017 14:54

thansks JoJo. Did you test with the Boots one? Was your line fainter too? Did you get results from blood test? Which clinic are you at? I am at CRGH in Great Portland St.

JoJoSM2 · 19/10/2017 15:11

Good Luck, I got a faint line after a minute maybe, eventually it turned pretty decent but then my transfer was a day before yours. I think your hCG must be going up quickly if things came up on the Boots test :)

I’m with Zita West. I’m going into central London tonight so will pop in for the blood test then :) I’ll probably get the result tomorrow.

JoJoSM2 · 19/10/2017 15:20

Good Luck, these are the tests.

4 high quality embryos at day 3 - what should I expect at day 5?
JoJoSM2 · 19/10/2017 15:53

Twickerhun, have you tested again?

Goodluckjonathan76 · 19/10/2017 16:08

JoJo, I could be looking at my tests they are so similar!! I am at work but will try to post mine later.

I like Zita's policy re testing. I wonder why CRGH recommend 16 days.

Weird getting used to being pregnant, like not drinking for a start!

Have you worked out your due date? Is it too soon to start planning??
