1001 posts!! (well, 1002 now!)

Moss, I am sorry that you (& any others) had to face that uncertainty & of course, hope with all my heart that it turned out OK.

I just see some of this as relentless bickering now.

Jimjams · 25/07/2005 21:13

I don't think the police are worried about offending others - but if a group is victimised then they tend to be more likely to turn into suicide bombers than ones who feel at ease in their country. remember these suicide bombers are in the main home grown. Someone somewhere is feeling disaffected.

Sure beating the shit out of a particualr group may make a section of society feel better but it'll do nothing to prevent more home grown suicide bombers.

Plenty of GB flags flown in one part of the UK btw (northern Ireland)

I'm not sure the GB flags particularly help inter-community relations in Northern Ireland though (and neither do the orange green and white kerbstones).

Heathcliffscathy · 25/07/2005 21:19

melissa, you are part of the majority in this country. as such it would behove you to be more graceful in accepting that your position as such doesn't need protecting. also, in view of our deeply deeply dodgy history as a nation (colonialism, slavery, etc etc etc) perhaps it would be more appropriate to understand why the union jack/george cross are not universally welcomed symbols, especially given that the george cross especially has been adopted by an extremely thuggish minority (some not all, pretty thuggish football supporters).

Jimjams · 25/07/2005 21:22

Of course it will make a difference- the more you opress a group the more people you recruit. Good god I voted Tory at the last election- but it's obvious.

Listen to Jeremy Vine Radio 2- Friday's show- somewhere between 12.30 and 1pm it describes very well the problems with alienating a group.

melissasmummy · 25/07/2005 21:23

My position doesn't need protecting?

What, when 756 were mained or killed on 7/7?

Who is it then that does need protecting?

756 vs 29,000 civilian casualties in iraq alone.

my my is the real reason that i'm so worried about events at the moment coming out to play????

melissasmummy · 25/07/2005 21:26

"my my is the real reason that i'm so worried about events at the moment coming out to play????"

(how patronising)

What then is the real reason do you believe?

Heathcliffscathy · 25/07/2005 21:30

'all the other barmy laws that we are given to make the minorities feel happt in OUR country'

i'm sure you didn't mean that people from ethnic minorities can't be as british as you did you melissa? I must have been misinterpreting that....

Heathcliffscathy · 25/07/2005 21:31

that's a post from the 'pc brigade' btw. looks like i don't have the monopoly on patronising then.

melissasmummy · 25/07/2005 21:40

I have nothing against anyone who wants to live side by side happily in this, or any other country. Regardless of race/religion/colour.

We all are aware of the "barmy laws" I am talking about. We are constantly being told we can't do this as it will offend so & so, we can't do that. I also include that we can't win at sports days as it will offend the losers.

My deeper fears are that people in this country do not value my life as much as I do & I don't see why I should have to sit back & wait for a bomb to go off near me & maim or even kill me & my family. Yes, I fear this, it is getting closer & closer to home all the time. And why shouldn't I be scared? Why shouldn't it play on my mind? To admit it isn't to be weak.
