Hasn't he been saying all the right things recently?

nickytwotimes · 14/01/2010 10:02

Ds will be going to a faith school.

I will be teaching him that homosexuality is normal. It is normal. I would prefer the school to back this up, but know they won't. Tbh, they probably just won't mention it at all which is what they do atm.

daftpunk · 14/01/2010 10:03

Not to most catholics Riven ....this is totally disrespectful to religious people...NC should stick to talking about baby books

Discrimination against homosexual people is illegal and the RC church know this, which is why they skirt around the issue in their schools.

I could a lot of things about the RC church and homosexuality, but will leave it for now...

I disagree wrt to 'most catholics' daftpunk.

I am a catholic and most of my catholic friends do not disapprove of homosexuality. Most of us couldn't give a toss about other people's sexuality.

Why is the church so bloody obsessed with sex anyway? Really gets on the way of the good stuff they do wrt poverty and justice.

DecorHate · 14/01/2010 10:07

Speak for yourself daftpunk, Ime most Catholics don't share your views.

Wonderstuff · 14/01/2010 10:08

Absolutly agree with Clegg. Although did make me think of an incident at our school, a boy who was openly gay pushed a christian RE teacher what her view of homosexuality was, and she told him she felt it was against gods teaching or some other such toss, he got really upset, but he was ask her personal opinion and it is one shared by many. I wasn't sure whether she should have said anything or not, it was a lesson for him in understanding that rightly or wrongly prejudice does exist. I would love for people to be teated equally regardless of sexuality, race, sex, etc. But we don't live in that world do we. But then I guess if we don't start to tackle these things in schools when will we break down barriers?

DuelingFanjo · 14/01/2010 10:09

Is it abnormal?

memoo · 14/01/2010 10:09

Daftpunk, I am Catholic as are my dc. They both go to a catholic school. I teach my DC that it is normal to be homosexual because it is!

GrimmaTheNome · 14/01/2010 10:09

I like NC more all the time.

noddyholder · 14/01/2010 10:09

NC rocks! No nonsense just common sense a breath of fresh air

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/01/2010 10:10

Are you actually a practising Catholic, DP?

MrsMattie · 14/01/2010 10:13

To be honest, though, I don't understand how you can practise Catholicism and be gay-friendly. Catholicism is an orthodox religion, is it not? There isn't 'Catholic-lite' (that's C of E, surely? ) If you are pro-gay, pro-choice etc, you aren't actually practising Catholicism, surely?

GrimmaTheNome · 14/01/2010 10:15

And as to 'why can't people just leave us alone'....

Because if a body is promoting discrimination and intolerance it shouldn't be left alone.

Churches can promote their ideal of celibacy outside marriage and fidelity within it by all means. Support gay marriage and then everyone can be called upon equally to adhere to this position.

Jesus said nothing about homosexuality and the OT parts which proscribe it equally slate adultery etc etc.

daftpunk · 14/01/2010 10:15

NC is after the Gay vote. no problem, he can have it....no one takes the Liberals seriously anyway.

LGP; 50/50

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/01/2010 10:18

What does 50/50 mean, exactly?
You are either a practising Catholic or you are not.

MrsMattie · 14/01/2010 10:18

Not a huge amount of people take the Catholic church seriously in the UK to be fair...

noddyholder · 14/01/2010 10:19

50/50

GrimmaTheNome · 14/01/2010 10:19

I doubt this was calculated as a vote-winner. Unfortunately (as the first few DM comments I bothered to read show) there are probably more homophobes in the UK than homosexuals

Do we at least all agree with the first part of what he suggested:

...all schools - including faith schools - to be legally obliged to implement anti-homophobic bullying policies

AMumInScotland · 14/01/2010 10:21

I don't think anyone can or should "leave us alone" when "us" is a state school. State schools should be teaching tolerance and equality, not being divisive. If the RC church feels so strongly that homosexuality is wrong then it should separate its schools from the state sector and admit that it can't join in with the tolerance and equality required to be part of it.

DecorHate · 14/01/2010 10:22

Mrs Mattie, can only speak from experience but most Catholics I know do not follow the churches teaching absolutely (eg otherwise they would all have a dozen children!) And actually I would say that there is a large proportion of the congregation which are Catholic because of their culture rather than being die-hards, iyswim.

It is actually becoming more and more apparent that there is a huge gap between what the Pope/Catholic dogma says and how things operate at grass-roots level - but maybe we are lucky just to have lovely, liberal, truly christian (with a small c) priests in our parish.

By teaching children to be anti gay rights church schools / churches are not only causing a problem now, but also causing a problem for the future. If church schools can't bring themselves not to be so homophobic then they shouldn't be trusted with children.

It is a fundamental principle of education law that children must be educated in accordance with the wishes of their parents.
Is that true? If so why are the government resistant to allow non-church schools not to have to have a daily act of worship? If the wishes of all parents were being taken seriously then there would already be schools without a religious character where assembly was secular and religions was taught within RS not in assembly / music.
