Story from BBC news site tonight.

I just do not understand people like this

The poor children, left alone while she gets off her face on drink and drugs.

I hope she loses the kids for good.

nah, we are all too selfish and self-absorbed

Cestlavie, the kind of actions you describe are not farfetched ime. I've often written similar sorts of conditions into an agreement, but in this sort of case it would be likely to be further down the line- too risky to the little ones without further assessment I'd have thought.

posie, that sort of scheme exists in, I think, Dundee and apparently works quite well. Was a big write up in the Guardian the other day.

Is this it?

Oh FFS 'Animals are better parents.' indeed. THis woman didn't eat her children. Quite a lot of female animals do exactly that, if stressed or worried.

I completely agree with thedollshouse post at 09:58:54 about help and intervention for girls before they they get to the point they become a single mum with 4 kids an no sense of responsiblity for them. You are quite right = the child we are feeling so sorry for now is likely (if nothing else changes in her life) to be on the same path and the cycle will continue.

I also think that comments like "animals are better mothers" are pretty simplistic.

yes, that link is the one. Looks promising

Another scheme that seems to be helping (although it's very early days to have hard evidence from the UK it has good results in the US) is family nurse partnerships, where young mothers who fall into categories that might struggle a bit more than most have a dedicated nurse who builds a relationship with them through pregnancy and the baby and toddler years (and with the father if he's on the scene).

Seems to have very positive feedback from the mothers and to have helped people who have been the victims of poor parenting themselves. And then, hopefully, their children will grow up to be confident, good enough parents (and good enough is all any of us can claim to be).

Have not read all the thread but my view is that her punishment was too light. Others have mentioned the whereabouts of the fathers but if she is a drunk who sleeps around, does she even know who the fathers are and even care?
There are many women out there who use children as a currency and the men are just seen as sperm donors.

She needs help with her addictions but she also needs to face up to her responsibilities. She was the one sleeping around and therefore she has to take responsibility for the consequences of her actions.

Fall pregnant once, accidents can happen to anyone. Fall pregnant four times and still have no father around, and still want to live a single carefree life without giving a damn what happens to your off-spring, then you are completely wreckless, irresponsible and deserve no sympathy.
