Walktheline, isnt that because Harold Shipman was a one off, whereas this is endemic?

ronshar · 21/05/2009 22:35

Excuse me Walktheline. What exactly are you trying to say?
That what I have said is all chinese whispers? That the journalists who have helped bring this to the publics atttention are wrong?

Are you new to mumsnet, walktheline?
I only ask because of your low IQs jibe. You know, loads of people have come on mumsnet and assumed that a bunch of gossiping mums must be stupid.

WalktheLine - are you related to ChocolateKitten by any chance?

Litchick · 21/05/2009 22:40

Well you know the old adage Dittany - everyone calls their priest Father, except their son who calls them uncle.

cestlavie · 21/05/2009 22:40

Ah, Walktheline, cheap insults and inaccurate metaphors. Surely there is a point somewhere in there? Do feel free to add some facts and knowledge to the debate though.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 21/05/2009 22:43

? walktheline

This was hundreds of abusers, abusing thousands of children over decades. And they all were in it together, with the authorities.

Not one looney acting alone.

Please do feel free to come back and elaborate as to why your comparison bears consideration.

ronshar · 21/05/2009 22:43

I clicked your link but it didnt work.

What about all the children who were taken from their families and sent to help start up convents etc in Australia? Some families didnt even realise that their babies were being adopted.

Do you think it is appropriate to question people's IQ levels? If any of us have low or high IQ's does it make our experiences or opinions any less valid??

OK I was a bit harsh, but seriously some of the comments on this thread are ridiculous.

One in ten priests are not abusers dittany, and that is exactly the kind of comment that I am objecting to.

Instead of generalising and repeating cliches the real issues are being missed.

Most organisations suffer from corruption in one form or other - look at Parliament.

By implying that Catholics are inherently or especially susceptible to it is bigoted.

glastocat · 21/05/2009 22:47

I just had a look at the local free sheet that came through the door here (The Cork Independent). There were three institutional schools in Cork alone, all of them riddled with systemic abuse. In one of them one priest used to punish children by making them climb a ladder naked, when he would whip them so hard they were left scarred. One of the schools ( St Patrick's Industrial school)had seven sexual abusers. This is not a case of 'one bad apple', and I don't understand the apologists on here, I really don't.

WalktheLine · 21/05/2009 22:47

'Instead of generalising and repeating cliches the real issues are being missed.'

That sentence made no sense! swap 'instead of' for 'whilst'.

BigBellasBeerBelly · 21/05/2009 22:47

What are the real issues then? If not the institutional abuse of thousands of defenceless children?

ronshar · 21/05/2009 22:49

It isnt Catholics. It was Irish Catholics in Ireland since approx 1940. That is a very specific area of reference.
If you are not from that section of society then you have nothing to feel personnally offended about.

Sigh. Another load of bollocks from another apologist for abusers.

No-one has said that catholics are inherently or especially susceptible to being abusers.

Another Aunt Sally.

Doesn't anyoen who wants to defend the catholic church's behaviour about this endemic abuse have any real arguments, rather than Aunt Sally's set up solely to knock down?

ronshar · 21/05/2009 22:52

Also I am staggered that you can compare the missuse of expenses with the revolting behaviour of thousands of adults who were supposed to be looking after very small and vulnerable children.

I am begining to think that you must be a Catholic!

ronshar · 21/05/2009 22:54

Bella it is because no one with any soul could come on here tonight and make excuses for what happened.

Metella · 21/05/2009 22:54

I suppose there are some Catholics who simply can't bring themselves to accept the truth. It would bring the whole pack of cards tumbling down around them.

WalktheLine: To simplify the argument. No one has an problem with individual Catholics. People have a very large problem with the Catholic Church. This report summarises only the latest in a very, very long line of abuses and atrocities which the Catholic Church has either perpetuated, condoned or tolerated in its long and inglorious history. If you would like a list, or even just a summary of these, I'd be more than happy to provide them to you.

As the report out today states, it is not a problem with the system. The problem is the system. But, of course, should you have a valid counter-argument, please go ahead.
