I do feel sorry for Sachs who is forever going to be known as "someone's grandfather" from now on

wintera · 31/10/2008 15:31

Sorry I've put mine on the wrong thread! Supposed to be on the other one!

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 31/10/2008 15:36

"I think it's appalling that you think that because a woman performs in a sexual manner in her professional life that that makes it fair enough for men to decide to use her private life as obscene material for their own professional acts."

And for the 50 millionth and first time - I have not said that I think it is OK to use her private life as obscene material for their own acts. I have repeatedly said I do not think it's OK. Repeatedly. So many times that I can't think of a new way of saying that I think their 'joke' was out of order. So for the record JR and RB overstepped the mark. I can't make it any clearer than that My argument is that the reaction is OTT.

And nor have I said that men behave appallingly just because of testosterone. I said slightly tongue in cheek elsewhere something along the lines that they can't control themselves poor loves. That was a joke. Probably a sexist one. I do think hormones affect the way someone behaves. I don't think that is too out there - and nor does that statement remotely suggest that testosterone legitimises bullying or rape or anything else.

but hey ho, keep on twisting paraphrasing what I say to suit your own argument.

IorekMandelson · 31/10/2008 15:37

Morningpaper - I know. The whole grandfather/granddaughter aspect keeps making me think of Heidi.

beaniescreamyb · 31/10/2008 15:43

Brand and Ross had the kind of conversation they might have with eachother in private, but on a radio programme which was pre-recorded and should have been edited.

Some of us believe that these kinds of conversations are not acceptable even in private.

Some of us think that these kinds of conversations are ok in private but they made a terrible error broadcasting it.

Some of us believe all men are bastards.

?

mabanana · 31/10/2008 15:45

I must be bored now, I am laughing at the idea of a satanic slug
I think GB is going to end up being pretty much crucified over this (which she may or may not enjoy...) and I feel for poor AS, who is going to be horrified by what is revealed. If he was unhappy about the thought of her sleeping with Brand, her joining a neo-nazi S&M troupe might finish the poor bloke off.
I do think RB & JR are such bastards to have made a nasty, bullying joke of all this. It won't end well.

mabanana · 31/10/2008 15:48

Beany, I agree that men have these conversations in private. If someone my dh knew had a fling with a neo-nazi S&M goth, I have no doubt their conversation would be interesting...but I cannot imagine any man I've ever met (or that any of us have ever met) thinking it was funny or 'edgy' to ring the girl's unsuspecting grandfather to gloat about it. That is so beyond the pale it's not true.

beaniescreamyb · 31/10/2008 15:49

I guess though - had Brand and Ross's phonecalls not been broadcast then GB wouldn't be in this awful position where her life is about to be dragged through the press, and Andrew Sachs wouldn't have to keep finding out more upsetting things.

Should have been edited. Obviously A Sachs would still have received the phone messages but at least he would have been able to discuss it with his grandaughter, make his complaint known and get the apologies he originally asked for.

How did this get into the press again? The agent? I wonder if the writer of the Daily Mail article even heard the programme as broadcast?

Perhaps this is all more deliberate than we realise?

IorekMandelson · 31/10/2008 15:53

A journalist from the Mail on Sunday heard it and contacted Andrew Sachs' agent.

beaniescreamyb · 31/10/2008 15:55

I demand to know where MILES GOSLETT really was between the hours of 9pm and 11pm on October 18, I don't think he was listening at all! So how did he get the story?

beaniescreamyb · 31/10/2008 15:56

I am now on a mission to find out where Miles Goslett was!

mabanana · 31/10/2008 15:59

I really do feel for the family. I don't know how much her parents know, but it seems very unlikely that AS knew anything about her professional life at all. I'd guess that RB knew all about it - it's right up his street - so knew what a potential can of worms he was opening in public with those calls.

VictorianSqualor · 31/10/2008 16:22

Apparently, according the video of andrew sachs on the BBC website, he knew about the recording from the producer of the show, nowhere else. So I'm not sure if it was even really recording on his answerphone.
But it seems, from his side, that he was contacted by the producer (or someone similar) and asked if he was happy for it to go ahead or if he'd prefer to redo the interview next week. He said yes he would. They said we'll see what we can do and broadcast it anyway.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 31/10/2008 16:26

mabanna I don;t think you can say 'it seems very unlikely AS knew anything about her professional life at all'. We can have absolutely no idea what he did and didn't know.

However, of course RB and JR should have assumed he didn't know. Although perhaps as VS says it wasn't on his answerphone at all. Seems weird that he'd have to hear it from a producer if it was on his answer phone. Who knows?

VictorianSqualor · 31/10/2008 16:48

Cynical, moi?hmm

I do think AS comes across very well in this interview seems like he just wants it over with.

zippitippitoes · 31/10/2008 17:04

say no more

pointygravedogger · 31/10/2008 17:04

my, my. Sachs approved it.

What a farce. Brand and Ross should be reinstated, as should the sacked producer.

pointygravedogger · 31/10/2008 17:07

re poor georgia's family knew nothing about it. Well, they could have looked at her myspace anytime

zippitippitoes · 31/10/2008 17:13

zippi wonders what her ds gets up to seeing as he wont be her friend on facebook

VictorianSqualor · 31/10/2008 17:13

I'd find it hard to believe that she was travelling Europe with a band called Satanic Sluts and appearing in music videos and magazines yet her family knew nothing of it.

VictorianSqualor · 31/10/2008 17:14

Lol Zippi.

zippitippitoes · 31/10/2008 17:14

i have emailed bf and voluinteered to dress up as a satanic slug for him tonight as i am feeling horny

Beachcomber · 31/10/2008 17:23

Dittany you said;

"Beachcomber, everybody has their own issues and hot button topics that they get worked up about. I don't think you can dictate that they must get worked up over one thing and not another.

Have you posted threads about sexist advertising as that seems to bother you so much? I'd certainly contribute to those because sexism in advertising bothers me at least as much as sexism in the media."

Dittany, you misunderstand me. In no way am I trying to dictate what people can get worked up over and nowhere in my post did I suggest any such thing.

I said I doubted if the many people who seem all worked up about the issues raised by this incident are consistent in their thinking when it came to less publisised and more insidious sexism. Rather different to what you are telling me I said.

FWIW I have lots of discussions about many of the issues surrounding sexism and advertising is a particular bugbear of mine. I don't have those sorts of discussions on MN but on a feminist board I frequent. Is that OK with you?

pointygravedogger · 31/10/2008 17:27

zippi, if your bf's not into it, give russell a bell.

zippitippitoes · 31/10/2008 17:29

only if he promises to broadcast the fact he slept with me to the nation lol
