I really detest the DM and all it stands for. My mum reads it and is constantly quoting stuff from it which she actually thinks is true when it is all bullsh*t. It drives me and my brother mad but I have now given up trying to change her mind as she is nearly 70 and is not going to be swayed. The thing is that she is a lovely tolerant generous person but I really think the DM is brainwashing her into being racist without her actual knowledge. It makes me so mad I could spit!!

LittleBellaLugosi · 31/10/2008 13:56

come come. It was Chris Moyles. It may have been tasteful and sensitive, but I somehow doubt it.

Another boysy git imo.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 31/10/2008 13:57

Look she says this:

"I LIKE TO PARTY, I DON'T CARE IF YOU CALL ME A "WASTER" OR EVEN A "GROUPIE" BECAUSE I AM HAVING SO MUCH MORE FUN THAN YOU AND LIVING THIS WAY MAKES ME HAPPY. I am a very happy girl as I am so dont push your beliefs on me because I'll think you are shit."

Which is fine, fair enough, she can live her life how she wants. But you can see why someone would think it OK to mention her and sex in the same sentence. Producers & presenters should have remembered that the phone calls were being made to her grandfather. They seem to have forgotten that.

oh dittany..go back to knitting rainbows & waterfalls..or the crossword in womans weekly..whatever it is you do when you're not on here talking crap.....she's gonna milk this for every penny she can.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 31/10/2008 14:13

actually Dittany, having read her Myspace page I think she's strong, sexually very confident and happy living the life she lives. Good luck to her.

I think it's rather patronising to assume that really she deep down cares what the 'normals' think or she wouldn't be writing that.

LittleBellaLugosi · 31/10/2008 14:15

I hope she is.

I still don't quite see why what she is like, has any bearing whatsoever on why the BBC think sexism and mysogyny are acceptable broadcast material.

But do any of us really honestly care that much?

The BBC has been broadcasting sexist mysogynistic material since they set up. They didn't start with the likes of JR and RB and no doubt will not stop either.

VictorianSqualor · 31/10/2008 14:25

LittleBella, misogyny is unacceptable. With that I agree, but I honestly don't think that it was meant as misogynistic. Especially not by Brand.

Just because it involved a woman, a man and sex does NOT make it misogynistic and I fear that by throwing this word around every time women are mentioned that it loses it's power.
There is plenty of misandry in comedy too, more so in soaps and the like than sketch shows fronted by men, but it's there and you don't have to look hard to find it.

Also I agree with jimjams, I have read a lot about Georgina and the Satanic Sluts (including her blogs and myspace blurbs, her own words). I really don't think she gives two hoots about what other people think.

LittleBellaLugosi · 31/10/2008 14:26

Oh I'm sure they didn't mean to be sexist VS.

Jim Davidson never means to be racist either and argues passionately that he is not a racist. I believe he really believes that. But I'd still argue against his false consciousness.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 31/10/2008 14:27

You didn't say that she was asking people to keep their opinions to themselves, you said she cared what other people thought. There a difference between having to be subjected to someone's opinion on something and actually caring what they think.

And nowhere did I say she wanted to be ribbed about her sex life by Brand and Ross, stop twisting what I say, I said that give her career is about sex, then some people are going to mention her and sex in the same sentence. No doubt at all that its nothing to do with her grandparents and that it shouldn't have been said to AS.

Sophable I need my wall back.

darkpunk · 31/10/2008 14:29

haven't got a clue about what?

Beachcomber · 31/10/2008 14:33

I get much more irate at the average advert and the images of women used to sell shampoo, cars and the like than I can manage to get worked up about this.

Er no that's not what I said dittany. Not remotely. BUt feel free to keep making it up.

I have repeatedly said the the 'joke' should not have been broadcast. Actually let alone broadcast I think they should have had the sense not to do it. A lot of people seem to think it would have been OK providing it hadn't been broadcast. Personally I think the place for potentially the most damage was between GB and AS - and so the call shouldn't have happened full stop. That was the site of damage.

The image of GB that I am disagreeing with is the idea that she's a passive little creature who things happen to and who therefore needs protecting. I think that's patronising. I agree the phone calls were not of her doing; of course, but the newspaper interviews etc she is giving now are fully under her control as are her Myspace pages etc. Good luck to her, but treat her as if she has a brain and free will/a choice. She does.

Beachcomber · 31/10/2008 14:53

It is not that it isn't possible for me to get irate about both. I just think it is bizarre how many people seem to care so much about this but you don't hear the same voices getting upset over say the images of women used in much advertising.

I'm just wondering how many of the people who are getting all worked up about this see and get angry about so much of the insidious sexism that we are exposed to on a pretty constant basis.

'Tis bandwagon jumping on a mass scale.

Hi All, haven't posted much over the last couple of days but have caught up on most the threads. Please don't start having a go at each other. I have enjoyed, and most of all respected all the opinions expressed on here. I may not agree with all of you on certain aspects of this story, but I respect your right to have an opinion about it, as I think we all should.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 31/10/2008 15:17

God dittany do you extrapolate so much with everything? Stop telling me what I'm thinking.

I do think that if you dress in bondage gear and advertise yourself as a slut then many men will treat you as sexually up for it/as being up for a conversation about sex. I never said it was OK for that conversation to take place on radio 2 or with your grandfather. I don't think it is. Lets make that clear (for the 50 millionth time).

And my point about testosterone is that men and women are biologically different. Testosterone makes men think about sex a lot more. Actually it's not just testosterone that has an effect- I know when I'm ovulating as I switch from 'I'd rather have a cup of tea' mode to actually fancying some sex. To suggest that I think that testoserone makes it OK for them to bully women, and lose all sense of decency is extrapolating wildly and ridiculously.

My argument in all this is actually quite middle of the road so lets be clear what it is. They overstepped the mark, it should not have been said (let alone broadcast) but the the reaction is totally OTT. But feel free to carry on saying I think all women deserve to be raped or something. Good grief.

I put this post on this thread yesterday [have edited it a bit though!] -

'I agree with some of the posts that say 'Why shouldn't she tell her side of the story?' as it wasn't her that broadcast this in the first place. She is making the best of a bad situation I suppose. Although, I personally would have more respect for her if she didn't sell her story to the Sun and get Max Clifford involved. An in depth TV interview may have been the better option?

I do however think this whole incident reeks of hypocrisy on every level. And it should now set a precedent for this kind of story. Kiss and tell stories are in the newspapers every week. If we are indeed sick of this kind of tale, then let's take it to the max. I shall expect 27,000 complaints next time a daily newspaper has a kiss and tell on the front cover. Who am I kidding? I probably won't complain . . thats the sad part of it.'

Have decided that No I won't just sit by anymore when I don't agree with something in the press. Have found a link for complaints about the press, if anyone wants it -

www.pcc.org.uk/complaints/form.html

Right, while I'm on the rampage, I think I might pop down to my nearest supermarket and complain about all those lads mags (Zoo, Nuts) front covers being on show where my daughter can see them too!
