He's NINE not a baby or small child.

And I wouldn't give a monkeys tbh if I annoyed you - I wouldn't notice- when he kicks off there's nothing I can do except deal with it..

When he's lying on the floor kicking and punching or headbutting the floor I'm interested a) in keeping him safe and b) not getting too bruised myself. I don't tend to notice the gawpers these days.

foxymolly · 12/07/2008 17:11

Edam - Your post makes no sense. Spitting is disgusting and spreads germs. It is an health and safety issue. fact.

wheresthehamster · 12/07/2008 17:13

I think the health and safety aspect would be more the spilling of hot coffee as she's walking around.

stitch · 12/07/2008 17:14

jimjam, if they take someone along with them to sort it out for them, that that is osrting it our for themselcves.
expecting restaurant staff to do it is the issue.
this man is running a business. not a charity. if he has problems that cause his business tolose money then he needs to deal with them. he is not a charity for this woman. nor is he family nor is he a friend. if she is incapable of eating there without ruining his business, then she should have a little bit of self respect, and deal with the situation.
and i dont blame the man for not having the guts to say it to her. he's just a restaurant owner. not a paragon of honour and virtue. just an ordinary man.

foxymolly · 12/07/2008 17:14

Well there you go, two health and safety issues.

Skribble · 12/07/2008 17:15

Can we consider why the restaurant owner has had her as a customer for 2 years.

Perhaps the person asked to speak to her was someone who had been freindly with her over the past two years.

My first reaction was oh its terrible discrimination, but you have to look at the details.

As I said two sides.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 12/07/2008 17:15

When ds1 was at a mainstream nursery many moons ago I was concerned that other parents would complain about one aspect of his behaviour. I spoke to the manager about it and she said if they complained she would explain, if they continued to complain then she would explain they were welcome to take their business elsewhere.

foxymolly · 12/07/2008 17:15

Spot on stitch

Hecate · 12/07/2008 17:16

Do you think she is actually spitting on the floor? or spraying all diners within a 10 metre radius with half chewed food?

No. When the bloke says 'spitting on the floor' you need to understand that this is not projectile, she's not hurling it the length of the room. Diners are not picking gloopy lumps out of their hair. She, in all likelihood, will simply be dropping some bits back onto the table, maybe falling onto her lap, perhaps the odd bit onto the floor.

And you'd probably only notice if you were at the next table, shoulder to shoulder, or if you were staring at her.

HmphreyCushion · 12/07/2008 17:16

"then she should have a little bit of self respect"

foxymolly · 12/07/2008 17:16

jimjam - this isn't an issue with your son, this is an issue with spitting in a restaurant on a regular basis

lulumama · 12/07/2008 17:16

best make all the drooling disable people stay indoors, far away from us nice clean normal folk then, foxymolly

any worse than the health and safety breaches you don;t see, like staff not washing hands or sneezing in your food

let's hope that none of the people on this thread who thikn this man is right end up with degenerative illnesses themselves, and feel shunned by the world

stitch · 12/07/2008 17:17

jimjam, even if he was 23, if he was doing that in a shop, then anyone would understand he was not nt.
but if you gave me dirty looks, i would still judge you, because as i said before, he cant help himself, but you can.

edam · 12/07/2008 17:17

Oh rubbish. Spitting at people is very different from having difficulty in eating. He has not claimed she has been spitting at people, in fact that would probably be very difficult. And he hasn't claimed she's split coffee on anyone. Even if she had, a simple 'please don't walk around holding coffee' would suffice.

It's terrifying that there are so many apparently rational people who are so severely prejudiced against disability.

sfxmum · 12/07/2008 17:18

about venues in my experience most west end theatres have someone who acts as liaison and facilitates punters with special needs of whatever kind, same with a lot of cinemas etc

on the other hand I have heard lots of comments none discreet 'these people should be in 'these asylums away from other people it is not right'

surely there are ways of living together and one person should not have more rights than the next one just on account of a disability

some people fail to understand that an illness or an accident can put them in the same predicament

stitch · 12/07/2008 17:18

THIS MAN IS NOT RUNNING A CHARITY.
HE IS RUNNING A BUSINESS TO FEED HIMSELF AND HIS FAMILY

wtf cant anyone understand this.

lulumama · 12/07/2008 17:18

she should have a little bit of self respect !!!!!! wtf?

she is trying to be a normal mainstream member of society , that is the biggest amount of self respect she can have IMO

jesus wept

i mean, really

southeastastra · 12/07/2008 17:18

well i wonder who will visit his restaurant now

belgo · 12/07/2008 17:19

I agree Edem. I'm reading this thread thinking that any one of us could be struck down at some point in our lives by one of these cruel diseases. It would be horrible to be discriminated against because of it.

lulumama · 12/07/2008 17:19

becasue if most of society is so intolerant that they cannot eat in the same restaurant as a woman with a disability then society is well and truly f*cked

i cannot believe she is the difference between profit and not for him

if she is, his business can't be that shit hot

zippitippitoes · 12/07/2008 17:19

the health and safety argument ..well if that were the case then no one should walk through a restaurant in case they collide with a waiter

when i had a shop i had quite a lot of customers with different disabilities who came in

they came in sometimes with support workers and sometimes independently

it never occurred to me to suggest they shouldnt be allowed because they might scare the other customers

they liked coming in because they chatted to me and they thought the shop was pretty

they didnt spend much but that didnt really matter

and yes there were h and s issues potentially because it was a small cluttered shop

one guy used to bring me his pooems in to read..he was collecting the penguin book cover mugs

one of the regrets i had when i had to shut the shop was that these people didnt have somewhere to go as most shops arent very tolerant let alone actually talk to people

lulumama · 12/07/2008 17:19

this thread is making me sweary. not a good thing!

stitch · 12/07/2008 17:19

really lulu?
by going in the restaurant and spitting everywhere?

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 12/07/2008 17:21

Health and safety = no wheelchairs in cinemas
health and safety = non autistic kids on school trips

Perhaps he could have asked her to not walk around with her coffee. There's not actually any need to walk around with coffee in a restaurant.

I don't think that anyone has suggested what should happen to the millions of disabled people in this country who can't abide by social norms???

Special sessions? There are special sessions at the cinemas sometimes (not in my city). There's 2 hours a week (11-1 on a Sunday) when ds1 can go swimming. Perhaps we could open restaurants one day a week for the disabled? Perhaps shops one day a week for the disabled?

I would never send my son to mainstream school again because the ignorance was too great. Unfortunately he has to go into mainstream society occasionally to live. If we could stick to special sessions for everything believe me I would.

fryalot · 12/07/2008 17:21

I can see two sides to this, I can totally sympathise with this poor woman, no way should she be barred from a restaurant because she now has problems eating I am that it has come to this.

I can also understand the restaurateur who felt he had no choice but to ask her not to come in any more as he was losing custom - it is his business and his livelihood and it must have been a very tough decision for him to make.

What I can't understand, or even begin to comprehend, is the FUCKERS that are not going in to eat there because of this woman! that is what I find absolutely disgusting!
