The Restore Britain March seems to have gone pretty well today from what I can glean online.

It could be a faulty algorithm, but the trouble the PM seemed to think would happen doesn’t seem to have materialised. I’ve seen clips from the march where a diverse mix of people have marched, not just football hooligan types.

Well yes, but giving it away to the SNP itself. It's a compulsory tithe and about the only thing that is keeping the party afloat financially.

They don't give it to the Snp themselves. The MP group give it to charities/causes in their local area. You are thinking of the uplift that the MSPs at holyrood don't take which is given back to the Scottish govt. It's not donated to SNP party funds

FoulBlister · 17/05/2026 14:36

You have to hand it to the OP.

18 hours of concertedly defending a point she initially said might be based on a faulty algorithm about a march she didn't know the name of.

A thread on a contentious issue too. And when it gets contentious the OP threatens legal action. After the OP spends the day replying "reported" to posts.

Very odd.

But apparently it is the left that is authoritarian.

The 24th is Pentecost. The Labour government of H. Wilson de-coupled the Bank Hol from the religious festival on purpose, and desperately wanted to do the same with Easter, but Easter is huge commercial event as well as a Christian festival, so they got opposition from commerce. No opposition for Whitsun so it has disappeared from public conciousness. Mum and apple pie is US. Mothering Sunday takes place during Lent in the UK, before Easter, so no apple pie. Whitsun/Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit.

Eastern Orthodox celebrate Pentecost on the 31st this year.

Why do you think Mumsnet deletes posts? It’s literally to avoid court cases. Anyone that thinks they have the right to maraude around online accusing people of accepting payment for posts most be delusional, particularly in the era we live in. Anyone sensible would admit they got a bit carried away and stopped digging the hole. I’m happy to be called pathetic and I’m pretty reasonable when it comes to arguing my politics as I’m aware this is a left wing site, but doubling down on accusations of being a shill is unacceptable.

MNHQ delete posts that make libellous claims about named people. Not anonymous posters, although they will delete personal attacks as you know.

You are making yourself look very silly.

SpryTaupeTurtle · 17/05/2026 14:49

There were 56000 snp members as of last summer. I'm aware that they don't have the large backers that some parties have and that some people will give small amounts - but if they can afford to run campaigns and pay staff - they aren't in financial trouble

Surely exclusion based on race is racist ?

That would make positive action/discrimination racist e.g. black people get more points towards a place at Harvard for being black. Racist, no? Certainly racist towards black candidates, suggesting that they need help to get in. Also racist against non-black candidates who may be worthy of a place but don't get it because they are short on points.

How am I contradicting myself? Calling Keir Starmer a wanker isn’t racist.

It could be libellous if he never actually indulges in a bit of self care. Careful! You might be sued!

How is the country being run into the ground? The economy is okay, there is no recession currently. We have new renters rights, less immigration, reduced NHS waiting lists, wages rising, shall I go on?

Exactly this. Things are improving.

I have no idea what people expected. The sunlit uplands we were promised post-Brexit? Milk & honey to flow freely the second the previous government fell?

Immigration has fallen SHARPLY. The asylum backlog is being cleared rapidly. There have been fewer boat arrivals this year to date, than the last two. The NHS is improving. GDP is improving.

No, you don’t feel richer yet. No one in the world does outside of the super rich. Blame Trump and Putin.

I don’t like Starmer but this government is getting things done in the face of ridiculous hostility from really fucking stupid people.

So you would like a return to a Conservative Government.

What's your opinion on Conservative MPs who deflect to Reform and how can Badenoch stop it?

I can give my opinion on it, even though you asked a PP. MPs defecting to Reform? Good riddance, I have not been sad to see the back of any of them and I am a Tory. Kemi Badenoch stopping it? I don't think she's bothered. The ones who defect to Reform are the ones she doesn't want anyway, as she has said herself. She stitched Jenrick up like a kipper. All of which might explain why Reform don't seem to want any more of them!

Eastern Orthodox celebrate Pentecost on the 31st this year.

Thank you. Eastern Orthodox celebrations are generally about a week later than the Roman calendar, not sure if this is because of the Great Schism (11th century) or because they are using the Julian calendar.

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2026 15:00

Grammarnut · 17/05/2026 13:40

I'm not posting here again till after Pentecost, but I fail to see why Arthur, Alfred, Simon de Montfort, Boudicca and her daughters, Magna Carta etc are funny. They are not funny and they are the culture of this country (bet you don't know what the flowers of the forest mean, and had I mentioned Llewellyn the Great you wouldn't have a clue) and they are what people are marching for. They are marching against those who say not only that these things don't matter but that they are WRONG and EVIL and on the wrong side of history. The UK stopped the slave trade, its empire fought the Nazis and defeated them. It's not shameful to know and celebrate these things and other countries don't go round saying constantly oh, we have a dreadful history (even when they do), only the British.

If anyone at that march was marching because of the Flowers of the Forest, I will eat my own head.

Youre right about one thing, this is brexit all over again. The majority voted for it but if you were only online you would think the complete opposite. The dogs on the street could see which way the wind was blowing, I dont even live in the UK anymore but going by my DHs family, I knew it would win. Sneering, looking down on people, casting them as uneducated right wing fascists doesn't work. You'd do better to actually address the issues that have led to people feeling this way, which they still do in massive numbers.

You'd think people might have realised this by now but obviously not. Yes, telling people that they are uneducated, ignorant and stupid and that you know better will defintely work, keep doing that 👍

I'm not sure I actually said that? But what I will say, is that if you wanted Brexit and are incapable or unwilling of seeing the damage it's done, and are willing to throw your lot in again with the same people who promoted it (ignoring the corruption they're not even bothering to hide), that shoe might just fit.

Surely exclusion based on race is racist ?

Jesus wept! No-one is excluding anyone. You used that as an example of something that would be racist and I agreed with you so I'm not sure why this is even continuing!

RedTagAlan · 17/05/2026 15:05

Grammarnut · 17/05/2026 14:50

Also racist against non-black candidates who may be worthy of a place but don't get it because they are short on points.

Even if the candidates are disadvantaged by institutional racism ?

Really, this march was about expanding institutional racism. So logically, if that were expanded, then so would positive discrimination expand.

It's this old 2 wrongs don't make a right. And if the lesser wrong is designed to counteract the greater wrong, then surely the target should be to tackle the greater. Because without that, the lesser wrong is not required ?

I recall with the Harvard case, they stated that if admissions were based on academic merit alone, then they would have a majority Asian student body ?

"Kemi Badenoch stopping it? I don't think she's bothered."

It seems to be Badenoch's USP. Not bothered. Not sure I would be happy with that as a member.

Clarity - I'm a Labour member and I like Keir Starmer.

What are they getting done. With respect people should see an improvement in their living situations. Did they not campaign on a promise to lower fuel bills? They aren't the only party who make promises like this - and don't deliver

Why are you concentrating on immigrants and boat arrivals? What difference does that make to someone in the UK living in poverty. I first voted Labour in 1987. I don't anymore. Don't you think the last Labour govt should have got things done -

The fall in immigration actually started under the last Tory govt

People don't need to look for milk and honey to be dissatisfied with their living conditions.

What has Starmer done to improve the lot of people struggling with the cost of living crisis. In two years of government.

Removed the two child cap -they were pressured into that. They were also pressured into making a u turn on their pip proposals

The withdrawing of the winter fuel allowance actually started the rot of people actually crossing to other parties. They've also halved lcwra for under 25s

And they got completely battered at the local council elections

I actually honestly thought a couple of years ago that Scottish Labour would get into power in Scotland this time (and I'm aware that some snp seats were won because of votes being split between Reform and labour)

If Starmer is doing so well why do so many of his own MPs want him to stand down?

I’m afraid you can’t hide behind message boards to defame people.

This can be true but you have it the wrong way round. A message board user can defame a person if it is clear (not anonymous) who that person is. You cannot be defamed by a fellow poster while you are posting anonymously. However, if you wish to spend thousands trying to prove your point, feel free. Otherwise your threats are empty.
