https://www.wdhn.com/news/florida-grandmother-who-left-infant-in-hot-car-found-not-guilty-of-manslaughter/

I'm just watching this trial on YouTube and thought I'd look it up properly. This child, Uriel, was 7 months old and she left her in a hot car. Previously, she was looking after a toddler grandchild (same daughter's child) who slipped away while she was asleep and drowned.

I'm just gobsmacked.

Awful. This ain’t the fist case I’ve heard of this in USA, it’s usually a father though.

TwentyTwentyFive · 29/01/2025 16:26

Gosh that poor mother losing both children at the hands of her own mother. I can't even begin to imagine how the parents feel for trusting her after the first accident. Sad

LizzieSiddal · 29/01/2025 16:26

Gosh I hadn’t read the article, so don’t realise about the first child. Wtf!!

I know it's awful but I couldn't help thinking of family dinners either. It's one of those situations where you do sort of laugh incredulously because you just can't imagine how you deal with that.

It wasn’t a joke. I am genuinely wondering what their relationship is like. Do you forgive your mother? Do you blame her, hope she goes to prison?

Pillon · 29/01/2025 16:46

I didn’t read that as a joke - just saying that you’d be able to maybe forgive once but not twice

comedycentral · 29/01/2025 16:47

Absolutely shocking, those poor children. The entire family must be traumatised.

TomatoSandwiches · 29/01/2025 16:48

I don't know why they even allowed her to look after their second child, they are much more forgiving then I ever would be.

JustAskingThisQ · 29/01/2025 16:49

She didn't testify at her trial on her lawyer's advice. Seemed like the judge tried to talk her out of it or maybe they always give that whole speech in that way when you decline to testify in your defense.

There's a world where I can imagine that you know your mother as responsible etc and believe it was an accident that could have happened to you. So you do forgive.

I found that comment profoundly British myself.

I'm sure I remember reading ages ago that they didn't really trust her.
I'm astonished they let her look after another child after what happened to the first.
She is negligent. But the parents are too imo

Perhaps, personally I wouldn't be able to look at her ever again let alone give her the opportunity to kill another one of my children.

I’m British, and sometimes I think sarcasm is misplaced and inappropriate. The people who have liked my comment presumably agree.

Anyway, this story reminds me of the grandparent that accidentally held a child up to a window on a ferry that was open, and the child fell to their death in front of the parents. Truly tragic and I’ve no idea how you forgive - I know I couldn’t.

Wowsers. I mean once is bad enough but twice?!

Forgiving or maybe completely dysfunctional which is why the grandma was doing the child care.

Opink · 29/01/2025 17:01

A headteacher no less. I can’t believe the mother allowed another one of her children to ever be in the GM’s presence unsupervised again. The mum said she thought it would be fine as the grandmother was going to a restaurant with friends. But still shocking judgement.

It’s just such an unbelievable case.

Oh god I still think of that poor family when I see a cruise ship. Absolutely horrendous.

Yes, they didn’t trust her. They thought it would probably be okay as the gm would be with company whilst babysitting.

ItGhoul · 29/01/2025 17:03

I have to say that if one of my kids had drowned because my mum fell asleep while babysitting, I probably wouldn't have gone on to leave the second child with her.

Forgiving or maybe completely dysfunctional which is why the grandma was doing the child care.

From what she said, they have their own business and she usually takes the kids with her. This day she had a hair appointment that she forgot, messaged her mum when she got the reminder through about 9am and she was meant to look after the baby from about 12 until 4. The defense lawyer seemed to want to make it seem like this was a last minute arrangement and that's why the grandma forgot the baby was with her.
